Star Wars before 1977

I came across some articles from the New York Times, finally with some links this time. I especially liked From 'American Graffiti' To Outer Space, which is an interview with George Lucas on the set of Star Wars from 1976, apparently done as they were filming the trash compactor scene.

This page contains links to some of NYT's articles on the original trilogy, their original reviews of the OT films, as well as other features. Highly recommended!

Interesting article. It is great how the later movies fulfilled his dream of giving kids the desire to colonize Mars.

Great find. I wonder what they meant by "Hollywood's current sci-fi fixation" though. Aside from Logan's Run, there wasn't a whole lot of SF movies being made by the big studios at the time.

Where were you in '77?

A psychologist needs to examine the history of this line of George's:
""So I really want to retire and do a lot of experimental work with film that will probably never be seen by anybody.""
I didn't know he was throwing that line out way back in 76'... I guess it's a way to keep mainstream media off his back in some way. What mainstream publication is going to ask to see an experimental film.

Nice find of the article index, lord3vil.

Yeah, that's another awesome article. I particularly like how Darth Vader isn't touted as the main character. I wonder why...? In fact he's only mentioned once, as the Black Knight, which I thought was kinda cool.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

On a related note, while I was browsing through the list/screenshots of changes made between the 1977 and 2004 versions of A Star Wars / A New Hope on the official site I noticed that in 1977 Vader was listed in the credits as 'Lord Darth Vader' but in 2004 he was just 'Darth Vader' which to me suggests that 'Darth' was originally not a title but rather Vader's first name. I could be wrong but that's how I interpret the change. It's also interesting to note that the caption beneath the screen comparison does not mention the fact that Vader is listed differntly in 2004 than he was in 2004 (instead it just says that James Earl Jones was not credited in '77 but got what he deserved in 2004), probably because is my theory is correct it would prove George Lucas' claim that he had it all planned from the start and it's Anakin/Vader's story is a lie.

I actually noticed that too. I've always liked how the first movie credited him as Lord Darth Vader. But I didn't think about the change in those terms. I simply liked the fact that he was called that. But to lend credence to your theory, Ben does simply call him Darth, which is never again repeated... anywhere ever!

Yep, Ben refers to him as Darth. I always notice that too and it definitely backs up my theory. But we all know George Lucas is delusional and/or a liar anyway so it's hardly a revelation.
