iPod Question

How can I transfer files from my iPod to my computer? I ask this because I delete music off my computer after I put it on my iPod to save disc space, but I want to make a CD and I really don't want to have to re-download some of that stuff.

There is programs you can get for that and you can get some at the store.

I can't help you Nanner because I also need to know this, so if anyone can give a little more detail than Sean did, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

IIRC, iPods aren't supposed to be able to get files off the iPod once its on there. You are supposed to use iTunes and sync up the iPod to the computer, and not need to get files off the iPod once they are there. You can do it, however, with other software that people wrote. I don't know any program names, but a google search should produce results.

Check the iPod section of your local stor they should have software where you can back up your files on your ipod.

No, a store won't carry the software as it's illegal. The whole purpose of this lack of functionality is to avoid piracy by spreading music files via iPod. There are software solutions to this problem. Do a search for iPod related software on downloads.com. That should help you find something. Or just Google something along the lines of "software to move music from iPod to computer." They do exist, just quietly.

The best program out there to do this is called Xplay - it's by the MediaFour company.

http://www.mediafour.com/products/xplay/

I've used other programs, and this one lets you organize your media rather than assigning it he random data number given to the file when you dump it on your iPod. It's fast, and easy, but expensive. So...check your PM's in about 10 minutes, Nanner

Sharepod

I'm using this. Works nicely. The program actually goes onto your Ipod and you can transfer files without the use of using iTunes. It can be a pain to edit the ID tags, but its workable. Although, I don't know if it works with the newers ones. I've got a Mini-ipod from a couple years back.

If they do, then they risk the wrath of the RIAA. Not that I support the RIAA, but they do have power the likes of which I don't wanna fuck with.

I think Sean may be right here. The iPod is the only MP3 player I know of with this extremely annoying bit of functionality (and is part of the reason why I use Creative products).

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

And I'm also shocked that the RIAA hasn't come down on them and other players for this. But, then again, they don't offer up the store. I'm sure building this into the firmware was part of the negotiation so they could get access to so much music.

Seriously, though, to delete music after transferring to your iPod is not the best of ideas. I know you may need space, but you can always back it up to a data DVD and then clear it off. At least you have an additional copy.

Whoa, I just discovered that you don't even need that program. Just go to "My Computer", find your iPod (for me it was Disk Drive L), then go to iPod_Control (I think it's technically a hidden folder), then go to "Music", then find the songs you want to move, then just copy them to your computer manually. Sure it's a pain in the ass, and the songs have funky four-letter names, but at least it works.

Then spend the next 4 days straight renaming 30 gb worth of MP3s.

I highly recommend you avoid doing this at all costs. If you want to find out what each song is, you have to manually listen to it and then edit the IDE tag. It's ridiculous. I made this mistake before I discovered the program I suggested to you.

Not only that, but doing it your way will even rearrange albums...it's frustrating. For example, I found 'Fake Plastic Trees' from Radiohead's The Bends, in the folder for OK Computer...then had to find which folder was the Bends and move it over...long story short, I got so pissed off that I just re-ripped everything...goodbye 18 hours!
