The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released) — Page 53

If you don't mind me asking, WHO talked with Dick?

...

Unfortunate news. Perhaps he knows that he will get obsessed with it all over again if he so much as looks at the Thief, and therefore refuses to have anything to do with it. Or perhaps he's just too busy with his new film right now.

Whatever the case, he doesn't want to open old wounds. You can't really blame him.

At least we have the Sept 12 DVD release to look forward to (maybe). I wonder if the company that's releasing the DVD will suddenly become much more aggressive about what you're doing as the release date approaches...

I was worried about that too. The Sept 12 release will be the crap version and contain nothing we don't already have.

That said, things continue to move here.

And Disney if they chose, could do Dick justice without needing his help.

(It was a friend of an animator who talked to Dick.)

Is this confirmed?

We have no information on the Sept. 12 release.

But I'm telling you ahead of time, based on no information, and I will be right.

It's just that I can't fathom why they would release one of the previous cuts on two discs as a Collector's Edition without including extras.

Unless this is a "Princess and The Cobbler" / "Arabian Knight" double pack or something.

Interesting theory from Jeffrey Gray, of one powerful exec's role in the whole mess.

Patrick and I have often discussed Jake
Eberts' role in the whole debacle. Consider:

-He was executive producer of both the WB and Calvert versions, sold
the
film to Miramax, and actually commended Miramax on what they did to the
film;
-He was the one who complained that there was too much Thief, that Tack
and
the Thief didn't talk, that there wasn't enough Tack and Yum-Yum stuff;
-He was also the one responsible for the gang-rape of The Magic
Roundabout
for the "Doogal" U.S. release, as Patrick tells me.
A film I didn't even bother to see at all, even though I was a bit interested in seeing how well they adapted the stop-motion figures to CGI and such (and had saw the original shorts on Nickelodeon 25 years back).

Also, some things Patrick and I sort of have inferred, assumed,
postulated, hypothesized (none of it is proven; some of it might not
even be
rumored):

-I formulated a hypothesis that it was Jake Eberts who wanted songs,
which
is why Williams wrote songs and stuff into the workprint;
-Patrick told me that WB actually liked what was coming out of
Williams'
studio, meaning that someone would have had to talk WB into dropping
the
film. I wouldn't be surprised if it were Jake Eberts.
-Apparently, someone was dissatisfied with the workprint Williams
delivered.
If WB was enthusiastic about the film (though maybe a little frustrated
at
the slow speed at which it was coming out), could it have been Eberts
who
wasn't? Think about it; it didn't have the songs or any of the stuff
that
someone (Eberts?) wanted Williams to add; if it were Eberts, could
Eberts
have basically "thrown a tantrum" because they were obviously so far
ahead
into production that the chances of them shoehorning his ideas in would
have
been next to nil?
-I speculated that Eberts had an idea of what he wanted when he
approached
Williams, so him trying to push his demands on Williams wouldn't be out
of
the question.

Jack the Middle Man strikes again!

-Eberts would have had a reason to facilitate Williams being thrown
off,
because only without Williams would he have gotten all the stuff he
wanted,
and did get in the Calvert version.

Sounds nearly possible.

Heard a lot about this publication. Too bad it's not currently in print anymore, but I bet I probably would've loved subscribing to it! Some people though tend to have opinions about Mike Barrier, the former editor of the magazine, in his recent work such as the book "Hollywood Cartoons" or the audio commentary on several cartoons in the Looney Tunes box sets.

Two discs?

You're mistaken there Dave unless you have some info I don't.

In fact, Amazon fills in all the blanks we need:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GFLKE4/ref=ord_cart_shr/103-9589579-9308640?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance&n=130

The price is $13.99. It says it's one disc, says it's the Arabian Knight cut, and is widescreen. Which is better than Region 1 has gotten before.

There's new poster art up there. Although Amazon lists the film and DVD as "Arabian Knight," the new poster clearly says "The Thief and the Cobbler" on it. The poster is very similar to the Theatrical poster for Arabian Knight, which was a subtle piece of work with Prince Tack and Yumyum in silhouette against a night sky (intended to evoke memories of a similar scene in Aladdin, as well as Aladdin's original subtle "lamp" poster). However, this new DVD version shows facial features for Tack and Yumyum clearly - they're stylized and look strange. And of course the title is given as The Thief and the Cobbler with the logo from the Miramax VHS release.

This is a rush release, but it's good to have Arabian Knight in widescreen in region 1, for a reasonable price. I do believe that this was inspired by recent internet interest in the film .... those Weinstein boys work fast, don't they ....

What about the Nov. 21 "Collector's Edition" release that's also coming? That's obviously what he was referring to.

If we're getting a widescreen edition just five months after this internet explosion as well as a possibly better disc two months later, we obviously caught the attention of people.

I don't care how busy Don Hahn is or anyone else we could contact at Disney, but we absolutely need to take the bull by the horns. We need to start a fierce letter-writing campaign. All we need is a contact.

I'm working on it.

A bit more secondhand words on Dick's reaction .... Mo (his wife) said that they had heard about this fan effort from several people, and were surprised that I hadn't contacted them (I did actually, but I don't think they received it ... or hadn't yet) ... and were also surprised that no one from corporate Disney had attacked yet.

Developments should ensue ...

As for the November release, I assumed that that was the same as the September release. Anyone have any info on it? Dave is also the only one to suggest the November release will be 2 discs.

This Amazon listing for "Arbian Knight" seems to refer to the November release.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HLDFO0/sr=1-2/qid=1156708952/ref=sr_1_2/103-9589579-9308640?ie=UTF8&s=dvd

There is no info apart from it being apparently the Arabian Knight cut (73 min), and released by "Genius Products, Inc" in NTSC. It seems odd that some random company rather than the Weinsteins would release it. No mention of 2 discs and the price is identical to the Weinstein effort.

Could be an overseas release, perhaps Japan.

I am very convinced there will be nothing special about these releases from what little info I've gleaned, and the lack of rumblings at Disney itself (that we've heard). Seems to be a Weinstein only rerelease, and a quickie.

That said, it's lovely they're doing this as even a widescreen viewing of Arabian Knight shows parts of this film to more people.

And the DVD art shows more respect for the animation scholars who enjoy this film, even if the actual cut doesn't. I expect that this will be a more reverential treatment of a shoddy edit.

I'm amused that our internet revisionism has infiltrated Amazon.com to the point where they list the original cast rather than the Miramax cast, and the opening lines of the workprint and everything.

Genius Products, Inc. is a subsidiary of the Weinstein Company, IIRC. The name has shown up on all the Weinstein Co. video/DVD releases so far.

Well, Amazon.com owns the IMDB, so most IMDB info is duplicated on Amazon.

Whoa. That's a little ironic that they were surprised you hadn't contacted them yet, since the consensus would be that Williams wouldn't take it well!

I've said it before, but Disney may have legal rights to attack this, but it's free publicity.

HOWEVER, there's multiple listings on Amazon.com:

The 2005 P&S DVD - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006Q93L0/sr=8-1/qid=1156709726/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-3916514-9734314?ie=UTF8

The Nov. 21st DVD - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HLDFO0/sr=1-2/qid=1156709809/ref=sr_1_2/104-3916514-9734314?ie=UTF8&s=dvd

Okay then. We have two releases coming.

Hm.

Nothing to differentiate them yet, and they both are Arabian Knight.

Hm indeed.

I wonder if Dick has seen your cut? Maybe you should send him a DVD regardless, because I imagine that curiosity will eventually get the better of him, even if he says that he wants nothing to do with it.

On another note, can anybody help me with the plot summary on wikipedia? This is the only major thing that the article lacks now. I especially need a bit of help with the Fred Calvert/Miramax versions, because I haven't seen them. If they're rather similar, perhaps it would be best to point out the differences instead of repeating everything again.

If you're willing to help, please go HERE and edit the plot section - thanks.

I did.

I also sent one to Robert Zemeckis.

It's entirely intact in all versions.

People keep mentioning the Disney and the upcoming DVD release.
It should be mentioned the Weinstein Company is NOT part of Disney. The Weinsteins left Miramax and Disney. Looks like they took Thief and the Cobbler with them.

Damn that's smooth! (though I'm not that interested to see "Monster House" personally)

Speaking of the demonoid torrent a while back, there's a series of torrents currently up entitled "A Century of Animated Shorts" people here might like to check out if they like.

I guess most of us haven't realized that coming by a mile. I think the only film I bothered to see since the Weinstein Company bothered to release was "Clerks II" (wonder how much Miramax is hurting right now).

Maybe I zoned out with all the activitiy that goes on here, but is a Mark III planned (especially with a new official "whatever version" in the works) or is this project finally finished?
