Star Wars: 30th Anniversary (2007 - New Box-set)

Interesting news from www.thedigitalbits.com

A follow-up on something we've been telling you to expect for quite while now. 2007, as you may well be aware, is the 30th anniversary of the original Star Wars' debut in theaters. You'd have to be stupid not to know that Lucasfilm is going to have big DVD release plans with which to celebrate the anniversary, and we've been telling you that was the case for many months now. Indeed, during our last visit to the Ranch for the DVD release of Episode III, producer Rick McCallum confirmed that a box set of all six films was going to happen eventually, and animation director Rob Coleman even let it slip that the puppet Yoda from Episode I had already been replaced with a new CG Yoda to match Episodes II & III for the "future" release. T-Bone over at Star Wars Universe recently speculated about this box set, and we've been quietly checking in with our industry sources on it as well. Well, we've confirmed it: There IS a big, ultimate, 6-film Star Wars anniversary DVD box set planned for 2007. There will be more changes to the films, and there will be LOTS of new, never-before-seen special features - all the good stuff that was held back by Lucasfilm from the original Trilogy DVD release a few years ago. Think deleted scenes and more. We don't know if good, genuinely-REMASTERED versions of the original theatrical editions of the films will be included or not (though how you could call the set "ultimate" without them, we don't know). We don't expect high-definition versions yet, as those formats are just too new. We don't have ANY other details for you yet, so please don't ask. But as you consider whether or not to purchase the "limited edition" DVDs due on 9/12... we thought you should know that more IS absolutely on the way next year. 'Nuff said for now.

As always, please keep in mind that titles discussed here are tentative and are subject to change until officially announced by the studios.

There will be more changes to the films

For crying out loud.....when is this bullshit going to end?

I seriously doubt that the OOT will be in this set. I think we're getting the 9/12 release for two reasons....one is curb the bootlegs and the other reason is so he doesn't have to release them ever again. I think that's why it's a limited release only. Lucas is doing it to get them out there, so he can say they're out there and we should leave him alone.

I wasn't going to buy the 9/12 release, but I'm going to now cuz I don't think we're ever going to see the OOT again. This is it and we mind as well not miss it.

Yeah, sadly, I am thinking that too.

Yeah, looks like I'll be getting them too now. I keep changing my mind, it's getting a little crazy in here. I think Lucas is more like Jabba the Hutt in appearance and attitude. Has a whole bunch of yes men around to do his bidding while he sits on his ass and calls the shots. As to more changes to the saga set, I'm not surprised. I'm starting to think the only reason DVD's of the OT were released is to help pay for the studio move.

I am also wondering if one of the reasons the OOT is being released on DVD is because the new changes are going to upset fans even more....

I'll be surprised if there isn't some kind of stink raised about him changing things with every release.

I mean....yeah, it is Star Wars and people love it, but come on.....this is just rip, gouging and tearing the wallets of people. Is the Star Wars Saga EVER going to be completed?
Are we ever going to hear from George Lucas that he's completely done with the movies and is happy with them?

I don't think so........this guy has got some serious mental issues if he keeps changing things and then expects people to keep buying them. No way would I waste hard earned money on some dude's OCD bullshit. The continued tinkering is the result of someone who is never satisfied and can't make up his mind. I'm not supporting that.

I think that we'll see the OOT again. As for more changes, I thought that that was a foregone conclusion.

As long as fans are more willing to hand over their money than to complain, it probably won't.

If Lucas can be convinced there is money to be made by spending what it takes to give the OOT a proper release, he will do so in the end.

Especially when considering that it gives yet another opportunity for Lucas to rape your wallet a few more years down the line.

Look how long it took them to release Star Wars (albeit the SEs) on DVD. They don't seem to have been at the forefront of technology for a long time.

I guarantee it's because Lucas is too cheap to come up with both a HD and a Blu-Ray master. He probably is smarting over making all those Betamax tapes in the early 80s. He's probably waiting to see who the winner is in the format war.

Which is doubly annoying because it's probably not that much more than a "Save As" option with today's technology to create the master format.

LOL

And this is exactly what bothers me: how long it takes LFL to release stuff. I really do fear that after 09/12, it will be YEARS before we see the OOT again (if ever). Look how long it took them to put EP I on DVD! The SEs....

Lucas can make as many changes to his OT SE as he wants as long as I've got the OOT I don't care. Same for the PT, all I have is the theatrical TPM on vhs, a crappy xvid of theatrical AOTC and the theatrical rip of ROTS. the only thing I'm interested in these days is new bonus material discs. Although it's good the OOT is coming out next month, I won't be buying because I don't want to spend money on those SE versions.

Compared to normal human proportions, I think it's spot on! Also, you can find a more in-depth case study of Lucas' neck here.

For me that’s even more reason to avoid getting the 2007 DVDs even if they include the OOT. I’m hopeful that eventually all six films will be released in HD, but at this point with no clear winner in the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray battle that would be a stupid move anyway.

Hey wait a minute; that gives me an idea of how George can fuck fan-boys in the ass even harder. It involves 4 steps in the next 18 months:

Step 1: Release the old DVDs in September with a sub-par copy of the OOT so that die-hard OT fans like me will clear inventory of the shitty 2004 DVDs.

Step 2: Release the 30th Anniversary 12 disc super-pimp set, perhaps without the OOT even as a special feature and get cash from the CG gusher fans. More changes are set for this collection as was mentioned earlier.

Step 3: Release a Special Edition HD-DVD set with new changes that differ from those on the 2007 SD-DVD set.

Step 4: Release a Special Edition Blu-Ray set with new changes that differ from those on the 2007 SD-DVD set AND the aforementioned HD-DVD set.

In this way George can screw over big time fan-boys at least 4 times in a year and a half.

Darth-Adroit you're idea is sound, however... you've forgotten that there are proposed 3D versions of the saga in developement. That's the reason there will be no HD or Blu-ray releases. Maybe Lucasfilm is secretly developing their own technology via holographic projection. I'm sure the patents will make them more money.

Oh... and here's food for thought.

For those that do fan edits and continue to tweak them as new source material comes out... are you all to some degree like Lucas himself? HAHAHA! It's a symbiotic relationship. Okay, I know you can't read into sarcasm online but that's what it was. I respect those that have the skill to do such things here as they may be the future film makers of hollywood.
