Just cuz I'm not all evil:

September 13, three new editions of Star Wars will arrive in the ferries: a by film of the original trilogie, resuming on a DVD the version 2004 already available one, and on the other the version in his origin mounting, without the special reworked effects. Three editions awaited with mistrust, so much as Lucasfilm had fun itself to announce as if of nothing was simple transfers 4/3 for these original mountings. As much warn right away: after to have examined the least recess of these DVD, it will be necessary to consider them as of simple bonus...

NB: Lucasfilm forbidding the least screen capture of their DVD in the items press, it we is impossible book a comparative one by the picture in these orderlies.

CRITICIZE PICTURE

Original mounting: 5/10

Be clear. The first one gone out in DVD of the trilogie Star Wars without its "new" appendices really will disappoint. After viewing the three French discs, one can assert that the presence of the original mountings on a second DVD – the first one will propose the version 2004 – has not for goal to propose the films in irreproachable conditions as logically should do it the support, but serves essentially bonus. And we insist well on the consideration of the films in the state as a simple supplement. Or to the better, of archive disc allowing preserving in his DVDthèque the films that lulled our childhood to the even entitles than the video cassettes or the Laserdiscs while awaiting to obtain something of really worthy one of this name. For against all expectation, the possessors of the Laserdiscs exactly, or VHS remasterisées appeared there is a little more than 10 years and equipped of a good vcr there will not win that well little.

Besides, it will not be necessary to mistake on the presence of a blindfold "Master THX" on the morning coat since she concerns only the disc of the version 2004. The origin version is not therefore labellisée THX since as we know it, the picture is not compatible 16/9ème, but especially because she has not undergoes all simply no special lifting.

Copied of a source (the master of the Laserdisc) to another (this DVD), the film proliferates therefore of various artefacts, of often very loud grains on the logo LucasFilm to the start of the film, and of a video noise pronounced on not poorly of dark sequences where some edged ones with ribbon blue and red do not always shine by their discretion. Details that do not help definitively a scarcely acceptable compression, especially for titles so strong, of which it alone true provision – out nostalgia – will be a restitution of the colors and complexions more convincing than the video cassettes and the laserdiscs.

To reserve nevertheless to those that not some possess no copy, or that would wish to group together the two versions in an alone case.

VERSION 2004: 8/10

Knowing the machiavélisme of Georges Lucas, one expects légitimement to rediscover a restored picture to the perfection... but knowing equally the capacities of the fellow to offer his batch of disappointments one little to fear some menus defects. This is exactly the case with the edition in DVD of the trilogie Star Wars. Be not too harsh, the result to what to delight the spectators more fussy, and restored even in their least recesses, the films do not prove unworthy a second facing certain recent products. The black, element capital for the numerous scenes unfolding themselves in the space, are of a dark depth and general calibration offers a pretty saturation to the global nature one picture of a neatness enough stunning for a film of this age. The least details are clear and the compression suffers only very rarely, in order not to say never. On the other hand it rather disconcerting to discover the intensity almost orgiaque of certain lively colors (the red one and the blue one for not to quote them) that finish almost by to drool on the other elements that the surround. Although that concerns only very few plans, it is damage to see R2D2 and its some blue mosaic ones to swear on the barren setting at first of a new hope, or well a to put to bed sun, at the end of the same film, a lot too flushing to appear real. An error with difficulty pardonnable when one sees the carried out work on the remainder of the picture.

If the almost impeccable neatness of the picture returns honor to the photograph of the taken real one, the other problem originates forcement of the special effects of which the least defects see then made obvious themselves. Just as the too lively colors, ILM did not visibly judge good to lessen the colors of the guns lasers a lot too loud ones, while the one of the cut down integrate themselves wonderfully in the picture. The thing that one dreaded the most not unfortunately step was touched up, to know the made ones a detour elements on blue or green funds and re-incrustés to the screen by the continuation of which tinted it swears there again with the remainder of the scene. If that does not see itself at the time of the fight in the snow, the attack of the black star of the first film suffers exactly enough vessels poorly integrated. It is evident that instead of wanting to add effects 3D rather crude, the famous one drunk special effects more better would have done to rework the complexion of certain models and obviously explosions poorly rotten. Add at last that the dialog sequence between Han Solo and Jabba the Hut offered itself a lifting of the creature a lot more successful one than the preceding one, although the result be again imperfect since one always has the impression than Harrison Ford addresses to itself emptiness. To finish on a positive grade, it proves himself that the animated creatures to the hand picture by picture, manner Ray Harryhausen were not touched up and do not suffer from a least wrinkle leaving to the original trilogie a lot of his charm of long ago.

JABBA THE HUT version 1997

JABBA THE HUT version 2004

In order to reassure the numerous fans followers of the French version it is necessary to add that to the picture of the episodes 1 and 2, we benefit from a seamless branching with the written summaries in French as well as French subtitles at the time of the dialogs in earthly first rate language.

Original Mixage: 7/10

There again and without surprised, we have straight to the band his of origin that did not benefit from a remixage on five well distinct canals. But the mixages of Star Wars already had not in their lesson time to receive and imposed a Dolby Surround 2.0 of a monstrous effectiveness. The envelopment sensation is well there, never hesitating to done usage, all decibels outsides, of the five pregnant ones and imposes in a constant way his music as its effects all azimuths. Well evidently, all this will remain a little less clear and more stifled than this than we propose the second DVD and the mounting 2004, but nostalgia replies here well present, without shocking as much as the picture.

Mixage 2004: 8/10

Also endowed with be they, the sonorous designers of the Skywalker ranch do not possess the strengths of the Jedis to offer to the mixages Dolby Digital 5.1 FORMER one of the trilogie the power of a recent film. Well stranger again, the choice between the French track and the English track proves to be itself a true compromise, and not only concerning the language. We have of a quotation an original version of a limpide clarity to the sonorous effects curling almost the natural one but a lot too centered towards the before. If the body remains coherent with respect to this that happens to the screen, it lacks nevertheless a true extent, contrasting a lot too this that happens in front of and behind the spectator. One will note some differences of your of certain dialogs betraying a post synchronisation recent of Carrie Fisher, notably in the dispute scene between this last one and Han Solo on board of the Falcon Millenium. To contrario, the French version propelled by a very nervous mixage, loosens itself constantly on all the pregnant ones even when that is not necessary (cf. the breath of Dark Vador on the pregnant left, while it is well present to the screen at the time of his fight against obi-wan Kenobi).

An of course improper distribution but totally delightful at the time of the muscular sequences since to many moments your parlor will resemble a fails of the holds court. The damper originates on the other hand sonorous quality of the said effects, clearly less clear and a lot more stifled than their English counterparts. Quoted dubbing one brushes the better one as the worse one: the better one because it is extremely rare than a French dubbing of origin be so clear to the point to give the impression having been recorded recently. The worse one since at the time of the added sequences calling upon Han Solo (the blow exchange of laser in the bar, the encounter with Jaba the Hut), the latter is not doubled by Francis Lax to such not at all the difference interpellera even the ears the less difficult ones.

The two tracks nevertheless are lodged to the same sign concerning the envelope score of John Williams of a power of course little surprising for that possesses the already available films in DVD, but that whips us always as much the face at the time of the first grade. It leaves of even for the too rare FORMER effects (alone some aerial fight about it profit really), more discreet in the middle of the sonorous foutoir of the French version, and a lot too independent ones on the original version.
