You know, this smoking thing is a bit ridiculous.

However, I can kind of understand not regularly showing some of the cartoons that are offensive toward certain groups, but that's no reason to destroy them/edit them/not release them.

And what would be wrong with still showing them, albeit with some sort of commentary before-hand, like when AMC or TMC ran a bunch of Charlie Chan movies and had a panel of Asian-Americans (including George "Sulu" Takei) talking about the impact/ramifications of some the movies' racist overtones?

I don't know. I don't ever want to see things totally destroyed, but I also think it is kind of irresponsible to show certain things in a vacuum, without giving any sort of context. You can watch "Triumph Of The Will" on its own, not knowing anything about it before-hand, and get a totally different (and less correct) impression of the movie than if you know the context behind the film. I guess that gets into how informed a viewer really should be about the material, but in the end, I really think an informed viewer is able to make a better internal judgement of any film.

I mean, would you show "Birth Of A Nation" without giving any sort of social commentary? I know that's extreme compared to the mammy from Tom and Jerry, but both views on race are cut from the same cloth.
