Starting Next Week: Celebrate the Original Star Wars
August 18, 2006

September 12 is right around the corner -- it's the date that the Star Wars trilogy DVDs will be available as individual movies, each one packed with a bonus disc containing the original unaltered theatrical version of the classic film.

It's also the date that LucasArts releases LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy videogame, the fun follow-up that combines the classic Star Wars story with the imaginative building power of LEGO.

In anticipation of these releases, starwars.com is turning back the clock to focus on the original theatrical releases of the three classic Star Wars movies, with informative features that will help set the stage for these historic films. Read about what life was like in 1977, 1980, and 1983, and get ready for inside looks on the DVDs themselves.

It kicks off next week with coverage devoted to 1977's Star Wars, before it was known as A New Hope, and continues the following weeks with Empire and Jedi. Look also for continued coverage of the LEGO Star Wars II game, including drawing activities that will help fans of any age realize their favorite heroes and villains as LEGO characters.

Next week also starts the Star Wars Summer Road Trip! As reported previously, Chewbacca, Darth Vader and Wicket are hitting the road, traveling to a dozen cities across the U.S., beginning with Miami. Is your city on the list? Your snapshots that best capture the spirit of these characters and the saga may win you a trip for four to Star Wars Celebration IV. Read here for more details, and start submitting your photos next week!

Now, which versions are the bonus material?

You've gotta realize that the website is run by people who love the OOT. Whereas the guy that runs Lucasfilm does not.

For one time can StarWars.com not mention the OOT release with that Lego Star Wars game. I mean you would think they came in the same package, but I guess George wants it to outsell the OOT so he can scream "I told you no one wanted the OOT!."

Hey, I would have prefered the OOT to be packaged with Lego Star Wars II instead of the 2004 editions.

I think that's probably the case with most of the Lucas companies. I wonder if that's why were getting all the info pushing the OOT in the messaging about the September release even though there isn't even standard DVD treatment for the originals.

We're trying to get a writing campaign going to, quite frankly, embarass Lucas for this treatment of three of of the most popular pieces of film history, not to mention the fact that SW won 6 Oscars.

We're not trying to change this release, because that is impossible at this point. We just want to show that there is demand for an OOT ONLY DVD release despite what sales might indicate.

Well, we don't realy know that yet, but the first one was brilliant, and you know why? They showed up the PT for the piss-take it really was. I bet there'll be a joke about who's gonna shoot first in the cantina...

Actually we do, they released a demo not to long ago.

Lucasfilm knows what feature is going to sell these DVDs. They just don't want to admit it.

lego SWII demo - Han shoots and Greedo shoots. No jokes in that scene.

You can after that though, control Han, and then you can shoot the people wandering around in in the cantina..and you can shoot them over and over again. In the back, in the face as you discuss the weather or who is gonna get the drop on who...it's kinda cathartic.

They keep harping on the fact that you can buy each of the three movies separately...How about selling the OOT and the SEs separately? Gee, that idea won't be entertained, cause then people would make a buying decision that would taint Lucas' built up vision for the movies. Morons.

I've had that discussion with people before. I think you're right.

He's not a director with a lifetime of movies - some vast body of work worthy of an honorary Lifetime Achievement Oscar at the end of his career. He's a guy that made a series of 6 films, amassed billions because of it, and has become some eccentric that rules his empire (a film company as opposed to a publishing company) from his "ranch". The place is even named after one of the characters in the films.

He has people that speak for him and legions of blindly devoted followers that hang on his every word and believe every thing he says, no matter how ridiculous it sounds, how false it's proven to be, or hypocritical it is.

There are already thousands of people that study and discuss ad nauseam what it was he was thinking when he wrote a certain character or a particular scene, or why he would alter something years after the fact and then lie about it.

He's already become a Charles Kane figure.

I swear it never ceases to amaze me how disingenious Lucasfilm has become, it is like a well-oiled Politician who is running for office, and is funding the campaign on his own money, so there is no way the average fan like can balance out there message. And then they have such a loyal following of idiots who just spout out anything to defend Lucas like those campaign workers who know they are spreading lies, but just want their candidate to win so he can move their agenda further.

I am still buying the Sept. 12th release, cause I will take a non-anamorphic Sebastian Shaw over an Anamorphic Hayden any day lurking at me in ROTJ at the ending. Then I will say bye-bye to SW, until I hear, "The O-OT will be remastered........"

I think you're mixing your metaphors. Or maybe your politicians do different things to get votes than mine do.

"Now, which versions are the bonus material?"

Not only that, but...."It's the date that the Star Wars trilogy DVDs will be available as individual movies"

Call me silly, but I thought Lucas and his TF.n lackeys keep talking about how this is all ONE BIG 6-FILM SAGA, meant to be seen in order.

Doesn't selling the OT individually kinda go against that logic? Shouldn't they ALWAYS be boxed in numerical order from now on?

Like selling them separately is some big selling point - sheeeeeesh. It's like McDonalds selling each McNuggets seperately. What's the damned point?

I didn't even notice that. They refer to it as the "Star Wars trilogy." Like there were three Star Wars movies, and that's it. What's the PT, chopped liver? Someone didn't consult their LFL style guide before writing that.

I ask that about everyone of your posts

"Among many things I have to be thankful for are you, the fans. I know that some of you haven't liked every single thing that I've done with the saga, and that you have a strong sense of ownership over all things Star Wars. But take that passion and devotion and channel it into a creative project of your own."

/sigh

And yet, here you are...still reading them, and acting the troll yet again.

Read this: You are pitiful, and you prove it with every post here. Why someone would be such a glutton for punishment as to flail themselves repeatedly by reading the myriad anti-Lucas posts here is truly beyond me, but you have my sympathy.

There are plenty of other character analogies to be drawn, like his very own Darth Vader, or even Howard Hughes (with such one-eyed devotion to his "definitive vision" that he locks himself away from the outside world, collecting his own urine samples - Skywalker Ranch, anyone?).

Take a look back at what life was like in 1977 in preparation for the DVD release of the original theatrical edition of Star Wars! The original Star Wars will be available as a bonus disc packaged with the 2004 Special Edition of A New Hope when the Star Wars trilogy is released as individual movie DVDs on September 12.

hmm, DVD release of a bonus disc ???
