@Coov:

First of all, don't get this the wrong way, your covers are pretty damn nice, at least design-wise. But on the technical side I've got some major criticism on most of your covers:

First of all, the resolution of most of your background textures is way to low to be simply upscaled to the size of a DVD-cover. I know, most people don't mind about this, but there's nothing better than a nice, pristine texture at full resolution. The standard Mayang.com-"brushed metal" texture on your latest covers, and especially the leather texture on one of your earlier designs just don't cut it anymore at that size. But getting textures isn't as hard as it might seem. Scanning or photographing stuff you've got lying around - old paper, book covers, cloth, whatever... - can be layered on top of each other (even on top of a Mayang-photo) to create new, and way more detailed textures. The pattern-generator in Photoshop CS (and above) is a pretty nice tool for stuff like this as well, though it only works with rather random textures.

The second point of criticism is the detail on laying out your design elements. If you compare the six "brushed metal" covers, you see that neither text nor logos are in the same place on each cover. This is something that bothers me with a lot of retail DVD-covers... when the spine-logos of several DVDs are positioned differently on each and every cover. Even the "Star Wars"-discs from the same box have this problem, and I guess fan created covers should have this fixed.

OK, hope this doesn't come off too bad. Keep up the great work, and I hope this criticism was rather constructive.

There are plenty of alternatives which have lined up spines, text in the same place, etc... Coov has a unique approach that would be lost if he was doing the same thing as everyone else (not that I think everyone else is making all the same thing - there's a great variety). Besides there's so much choice of fan-created DVD covers... how much more do u need?

By the way, Rikter... u can use:

No offense taken, and I appreciate your thoughts. My attention to detail and quality are sacrificed because these covers are not a priority, but an escape. I simply do these to get away from my normal workflow. Most who utilize these covers do not have the eye that you seem to have and that is to my advantage. If I were being paid to create these by Lucasfilm then there would be a different scenario. I just don't have the time to go the extra mile to make them absolutely perfect (or even close to it for that matter.) Sorry, but thanks.

Well, they're good enough for me, Coov. I'm regularly amazed at your designs and I think your work offers a breath of fresh air from the typical layouts a lot of others put forth. Additionally, I think your "rush jobs" are far superior to many, many others' best efforts, and I know I'm not the only one who feels that way.

Thanks for all you've shared with us, Coov. Please continue to do so.

Criticism is the key to improving. I'm still learning, but I'm miles ahead of where I was a year ago. Partially this is do the Coov making me rethink the way I design covers, and in large part due to criticism which, when constructive, is a great motivator.

Take Casualimp's new set, for instance. No one seemed too jazzed about them when he came up with the idea, but after encorporating many suggestions made by the members here, he made some great looking covers which were neat, clean and very classy.

Appreciate the compliments once again. I'm still working on them, though I can't find good material. Searched here and online and so far everything I have is a bit small and I'm looking for things that when removed won't look like a complete extract and paste job. I'm a bit in the middle with what Coov does and what Laserschwert suggested on structural continuity. I'm visually impaired so I'm so keen on details to the point where it almost becomes obsessive.

Thanks for the offer Ell. Difficult to say really as I'm looking for profile shots of characters. Some I've found like Darth Maul for example (the one where he's robbed on Tatooine holding his saber downward) covers up the special features so I haven't found one where he's just fully standing. I haven't decided if I'll do an all heroes and villains collection (that way the user can choose who they wan't).

I am glad that this wasn't taken the wrong way... after all I just can repeat myself, Coov, your designs are really great. And the design part is the most crucial part of creating stuff like this. It's just that I am always trying to be a perfectionist... working as a designer myself it pains me just to see a great design being somewhat "flawed" by simple technical problems. But now that you've explained that these covers are more of a "by-product" of your work, it makes absolute sense.

Update on Episode III with Darth Sidious. Couldn't get rid of the pink saber as it was part of the image. Decided to go with a more dark orange-red for the background.

If you wanna, send me the background image without any of the text but with the Sithlord image, and I'll fix the pink saber to red..

Please do, because that picture or any picture of Drath Sidous from Episode 3 is almost unbearable to look at.

I agree. More than likely why I'll do some alternate character. That's the good thing about this template, less work to do after you have all the credits done and shite. Fixed it above; well almost. Because of the previous glow, the tip looks like it's not glowing enough.

So today I was printing some covers off for my collection that is ever growing and I found myself in a rut.

I have the SP FX: EMPIRE and MAKING OF STAR WARS features together on one dvd, created by rikter i believe. Well, the only cover i could find were separate.
So I went and sort of combined them into one cover from the existing covers.

you can preview it here:
http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/6223/themakingofstarwarsspfxhybridow3.png

Also, for the wal mart bonus dvd pack-in w/ episode 3 (the uber lame one titled THE STORY OF STAR WARS) ...i couldnt find any art for it, at least any good res stuff....so I took an old blank cover fom coov and sort of made my own for it.

I added the extra text to the spine and took the same text on the back of the retail dvd and stuck it on the back of the cover.

you can preview it here:

I feel bad as these covers are somewhat stolen in the sense that I sort of hacked them together from existing material from respected artists....but I needed covers for my cases on my shelf....so if anybody needs/wants them....I can send the full res versions to you.

Just PM me and I can help you out

No need to feel bad about taking mine... that is what they are there for.

True, I remember reading you said once that your covers aren't always "complete" so that people can take them and complete the covers for themselves if they want to use them. Nice idea really.

Whew!

I was afraid you guys would be mad/upset.

And Ell, I saw that cover too, but it looked pretty dodgy and low-res...so I figured it would be easy enough to just make my own. And it was.

I want to provide full size versions....anyone know where I can link to them without them getting super-resized and unusable?

you could try http://kevin.alfahosting.org/upload.html

Maybe coov could help you there... or someone else who's uploaded covers there. And I'm guessing you'd find your cover here:

once uploaded.

That is an interesting set. It looks like it is based on the Clone Wars Cartoons and the Ewok movie sets. Very cool.
