If the theatrical releases were given a high quality, digital master to DVD, with mutliple audio tracks available, and filled with other historical information and special features, it would make a lot of money. Perhaps. As I have stated, I do firmly believe that Lucas is anything but stupid, but he could easily twist poor sales into that, in spite of the fact that LFL keep sayin that this is just an attempt to release the movies individually.
