DE,

if you want, I can send you my lightsabre stuff so you don't have to rotoscope it yourself.

seeing as I pinched some of your fixes for mine (with your permission of course) it only seems fair if you want something back.

Awesome to hear a new version!

Only thing I can think of that ANH would still need done is just color correction and things like that. (Meaning things that got screwed up during restoration)
I do miss Wolfman, though.

And tellan, I would love to see your work with ANH. Could you post some pictures and/or clips? Or how could one go about obtaining your ANH edit?

My wishlist for a new DE version would certainly include a bit of colour correction, at least in a few places. Desaturation where appropriate, and also getting rid of that horrible blue tint on the walls of the Tantive IV. Goodness that one bugs me a lot.

Actually, my greatest wish would be for the audio track to be the '97 mix instead of the '04, since the '04 has so much wrong with it. It isn't even just the obvious stuff like missing music or quality of dialogue or crossed surrounds, but to my ear nearly the entire mix is flawed, mainly because the bass volume is turned up unnecessarily high. Listen particularly to the opening shot of the Star Destroyer and Tantive--you'll see what I mean right away if you compare the '04 to any previous sound mix. The bass is overwhelming, with the result that many sound effects are obscured and distorted, even drowned out. Some appear not to have been placed in the mix at all. I find it unlistenable, frankly, and having the '97 would make that scene watchable again, because that version sounds magnificent. The same is true of the shootout in the Tantive corridor; it sounds nothing at all like any previous sound mix. I have to wonder if it was made by chimp with only a flawed and fleeting memory of what the movie was supposed to sound like. lol The beginning of the movie suffers most in this regard, but many other scenes exhibit the effects of too much bass boosting as well.

So . . . any chance of that coming to pass? Perhaps not, but that would be my greatest request--it could be my definitive Episode IV if that were the case. I know it's not 5.1 EX or whatever but frankly I don't care about that--correct sound in two channels is preferable to flawed sound in six.

I wouldn't rule it out - I think I still have my audio edit notes somewhere.

Excellent to hear that further tweaks are coming! For me, just having the proper dissolve to Hangar Bay 94, subtitles in the picture rather than out (both of which were fixed in the avi release...still waiting on that DVD version, btw ), and (and I know you said not to mention it since you're giving it a try, but...) consistent lightsaber colors throughout would make this version pretty much perfect to my eyes and ears.

Keep me on that list for the version 3 DVD when available...

I know "No Lightsabers" but Im not talking about the correction youve heard 100 times over

Every time on the falcon that they show Luke tanning with the view showing C3P0 R2 and Chewie at the table and Ben off to the left, Lukes actual blade continually looks to get off kilter with the hilt, jumping around from the edge of the hilt to the center.

One other thing, Can Han only fire one shot

I think I'll leave the jumpy lightsabre as it is - perhaps I'll repaint it in one or two of the worst frames,

As for Han, I think he can shoot as many times as he wants, especially since we never saw how many times he fired in the OUT

Here's some screenshots of some of the new changes (thanks to Sluggo for pointing out the third one):

It may have been patched up after a take of it being blown out to allow the stormtroopers through later.

If you do get a chance to look at the "jumpy lightsaber" I think the scene it looks its worse is right after Alderaan blows up.

But if you listen to the Original Unaltered version you can clearly hear that there is only one Blaster being shot only once.

But I dont mean to bust them for you, these new lightsabers look pretty great, you do wonderful work.

Yes, those lightsaber pictures do look very good. Just a subtle little change (even just to the worst cases of incorrect coloring) that would've been a snap for Lowry and/or LFL.

Sounds like you're under the impression that Lowry Digital were involved with effects fixes to films; this is not true. The only thing Lowry Digital were involved with was the film cleanup of dirt and scratches (oh, and stars!). Any changes or fixes were done by Lucasfilm and ILM (such as the supposed colour correction).

I guess it would have been a snap for Lowry Digital to fix, but we can't blame them for not doing something they were neither asked or paid to do. That said, the saber colour screw-up likely occured after Lowry Digital had finished with the film, so they had nothing to fix anyway.

Ok, I figured the colors got messed up because of Lowry's correction processes and thus they are partly responsible, whether they fixed actual eefects shots or not (in this, I'm talking purely colors, though).

At any rate, it seems no one really watched the film too carefully before shipping it out. I mean, these are supposed to be George's ultimate vision of the originals, but there are lots of glaring errors. He may hate the OUT, but he loves the special editions, by all accounts (I mean, they spent all that time making yet another Jabba!). You'd think that at least George would look at it and say "guys, fix that stuff, will ya?" I know things are delegated to different people, but still, one of the highly placed people could've gotten fixes (at least lightsaber colors) done before the street date for the release, no? I wouldn't be surprised if there are people at Lucasfilm who have seen DE's version of the film and think "we could've done all that if we'd been allowed to!" I still don't think they would have found as much as DE, though.

Nope, our beloved blue was added after Lowry Digital's cleanup.

How’s Version3 progressing?

Slowly getting there. I'm just moving some starfields before the jump to hyperspace, and then I might do something with that "I know a few manouevres" shot where the Falcon performs no manouevres whatsoever, though it will be an edit of the original shot, rather than a new composite from ESB like Adywan's.

There's also the light coming from R2's projector that is missing in one or two shots (though it never really bothered me) which is mentioned on the starwars.com changes list.

In answer to a question in my ESB thread, this will be available as PAL DVD, NTSC DVD, and 700mb XVID.

Sounds good, are you working on this as well as ESB at the same time or do you have ESB on hold?

I just read the changes from starwars.com and was surprised about the projector light, never really noticed it either.

It's a short compilation of some of the errors in ANH. I knew of most of them, but missed a couple. Thought of you when a friend linked me to it a few minutes ago.

Cool vid. Before DE tells you, he's amazingly found some way to fix most of those, except the shadow and the guns. I never noticed those before. Now I'll never be able to watch ANH the same again! ~_~

I've read through all 30 pages of this thread over the past few days and I'd like to say good work Darth Editous.

I've found so many references to a Darth Editious out there in torrent land. Strange

I'd be interested in checking out the torrented xvid version, if anyone can help me out my PM's are on.

Slow, I'm afraid. Things have been busy at work - new PCs to install and countless others to move around, and only me to do it. I've also still got things to do on ANH, including, possibly, colour correction.

Sounds great!

If you're going to try to send the color back to what it was before the SE, you might have trouble. It seems like the colors were altered when the SE was created, and then boosted beyond comprehension for the DVDs. Big mess.
