They say the whole reason for the scene where Luke is mauled by by the Wampa/snow monster in the opening was to explain why Luke looked different in ESB than he had in ANH (because of Mark Hamill's car accident).

You've obviously not seen 'Building Empire' yet. Several 'official' sources have told me that Mark's injuries were not that bad. Mark himself has said that he only broke his nose. Stories of massive facial reconstruction are untrue.

Lucas himself has said that the scene did not exist for this reason.

I guess we will never know the truth though. Who to believe??
