In games D-pad or Analog what do you like better?

Author

I find it kinda game specific. Some just seem smoother with the joystick because they were made that way. Obviously all the best games (NES, SNES, Genesis, old PS)use D-pads. I play those more these days than newer stuff so I like D more.

Yeah, I don't know if I can vote. 3-D games are almost universally easier to play with an analog joystick and become a huge pain in the ass if you're forced to play them with a control pad. But 2-D sidescrollers and fighting games are generally easier with control pads.

Not necessarily.

Old Skool Star Wars definitely kicks New Skool butt.

I would agree with that. Seeing as my first ever gaming experiences were on a Commodore 64, I suppose I could claim a place in the Joystick generation, although I really consider myself a D-Pad kid (NES, SNES, Gameboy). Never owned a system that utilised analog sticks.

My first system was a NES and my dad got it before I was born and somehow I have a memory of getting one when I was young.

I got an NES for Christmas of '89 when I was three, and it's still kicking. I always take it to school with me and play it pretty regularly.

But by the time I was really getting into video game playing, the SNES had come out. All my friends had started to get it and really made my NES look lame in comparison. I didn't get an SNES until Christmas of '94 when I was 8, and by that time, the majority of its lifespan was already over! But I caught up when I got an N64 Christmas of '96 right after it first came out.

The n64 ushered in the joystick era. The PS came out with dual-shocks a year or so later and every console since then has been primarily joystick oriented (for obvious reasons posted before this). I kinda (read: fuckin') hated the n64 controller. I mean, not really while I had and played it, but in retrospect. It musta been a hell of a lot easier to design something comfortable and logical than it was to design that thing. I hate how Nintendo seriously tries too hard. They sacrifice quality of game playing just to be unnecassarily unique....IMO of course.

The best controllers ever:

1- Wiimote (Wii): No explanations needed. THE best one. Ever. Unfortunally my dreams of playing with it this sunday were postponed until September.

2- SNES (north american color scheme) - A classic. Possibly the best design and handling for a two-handed controller. The D-pad was smooth - like the DS lite feels now - and it had the L and R buttoms, a great inovation. It is THE controller to play 2D fighting games.

3- Panasonic 3DO - Don't laugh. I was one of the supporters of the 3DO, and I felt it could really do good if properly handled - heck, it would be today's XBOX. The true inovation about the controller was the possibility of pluging a controller onto another, thus creating a chain sequence that allowed for 8 controllers - the highest number for any console to this day, and without the need of any other aparatus, all you needed was to buy another controller. Plus, it handled pretty ok, although it lacked buttoms, having only A, B, C, L and R.

4- Dreamcast - it had a LCD minigame memory stick thingy into it. Crazy colors. Enough said.

5- N64 - Although it looked like a toy and had it's flaws, it handled pretty well. You could use the analogue stick with your left or right hand, or use the D-pad, or both! The controller could deliver one hell of a gaming experience.

6- Dual Shock PS2 - Sony never inovates. They steal. They admit to do so. That's their strategy. The Dual Shock pretty much grabs a little bit of the inovations around, mostly by Nintendo, and puts them into this confortable and handy controller. The D-pad is terrible, with non-connected buttons, but the analogue stick is convenient and the upper analogue buttons are a nice touch. It is the controller to play GTA. Sadly, Sony had it become a monster for the PS3, a mutilated one (thanks to a lawsuit involving the rumble technology theft), so it's like watching a really cool car test-crashing. It's sad but you gotta keep looking.

7- The Sega Saturn Nights into Dreams controller - A controller created for a single game? Well, it worked. Pretty well. And it opened way for more of these expensive gimicks such as Donkey Konga and Guitar Hero.

8- Intellevision: A 16-direction metal disc. A numeric keyboard. And 4 side buttons that made your fingers BLEED. All that connected on a vintage wood and metal box by a curly old fashioned phone cord. Ah, all those hours spent playing Triple Action and Burgertime, showing your mutilated fingers at school the following day, those were the days...

9- Power Glove (NES): When I think of the 80s, I think neon lights, Alf, that crappy Saturday Night Fever sequel, "A Flock of Seaguls", DeLorean, old faded photos of me as a kid, and a Power Glove. So enough said.

10- Neo Geo: Ah, I remember when I first had that... thing on my lap back in 1992. A controller you can use to serve drinks on.

Just out of curiosity, why the (relatively bland) North American color scheme? It doesn't really make any different to the functionality of the controller.

Other than for Fighting games, I'll choose the Analog stick when available.

It all depends on the game. I'd hate to have to play Mario Sunshine or Ocarina of Time with a D-Pad, just as much as playing Street Fighter with an analog would be a pain in the neck.

The colors look better to me than the all-colored Super Famicon version. I know both are basically the same, but if I had to choose one...

Chalk me up as an analog kinda guy. I still think the GameCube controller is the best of the current controller breed. It fits so perfectly, regardless of hand size, and your fingers always fall into the perfect positions. 'Nuff said.

I agree totally here, its only too bad that it hasn't had any substantial third-party support for the last three or so years.

Have to agree it depends on the game.

2D games tend to work better (for me at least) with a D-pad...original Legend of Zelda, Street Fighter (like Chaltab said). Newer games are work with the analog stick.

However, when it comes right down to it, I think I really prefer WASD with a mouse, especially for FPS games. I've gotten better using dual-analog on a Xbox, but I'd be a lot more comfortable with a keyboard and the precision of a mouse to aim. I'm trying to talk a friend into re-starting Knights of the Old Republic. She tried it on XBox, made it only a couple hours, and didn't like it. I've told her a few times that playing on a PC is much easier (not to mention better looking because XBox only puts out 640x480).
