Luke VS. The Abominable Snow Man/Wampa in ESB - oddly enough, the wampa didn't hit him in the face

They say the whole reason for the scene where Luke is mauled by by the Wampa/snow monster in the opening was to explain why Luke looked different in ESB than he had in ANH (because of Mark Hamill's car accident). And yet, watching ESB a few nights ago, I noticed that the Wampa did not actually hit him in the face, the Wampa hit him more in the back of his head. This means the back of Luke's head should be bloodied and not his face, yet we see cuts from the Wampa claws.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

I thought he whacked him in the face when he knocked him off the taun-taun?

There might have been off-camera injuries too: We don't see the Wampa drag Luke to his cave or hang him upside down.

War does not make one great.

Well if he was hit in the back of the head, he then proceeded to fall off the Tauntaun (2-1/2 to 3 meters) to the ground, which most likely was ice. That would leave a mark. Then he was dragged to the cave, might have flipped over a time or two on the way there. So this is "Plausible" as the Mythbusters would say.

That's what I'm saying - if you watch the scene you see that the wampa doesn't actually hit Luke in the face, he hits Luke in the back of the head and this knocks him off the taun-taun.

You've obviously not seen 'Building Empire' yet. Several 'official' sources have told me that Mark's injuries were not that bad. Mark himself has said that he only broke his nose. Stories of massive facial reconstruction are untrue.

Lucas himself has said that the scene did not exist for this reason.

I guess we will never know the truth though. Who to believe??

I'd really like to know the truth, 'cause one of things I always hated about Empire is my (perhaps mistaken) belief that the beginnig of the film was written to overcome something that happened to an actor in his personal life, rather than to serve any legitimate story purpose.

Frankly, it looks to me like Hamill suffered far more than a broken nose, and that his fairly drastic difference in appearance was certainly noticeable ... perhaps even requiring some sort of explanation in the film.

Either way, I don't like the opening ... and I might be more forgiving if it was not there simply to explain Luke's messed-up face.

Luca$h will, no doubt, revisit this scene and "improve" it for the next DVD release. Maybe digitally alter the angle of Hamill's head so that the Wampa catches him full in the face. And add a custard pie.

I think the opening is fantastic- I think it was very creative of them to put the main protagonist in such peril a mere 3 minutes into the film.

They've always denied that the Wampa scene had anything to do with MH's real-life injuries. Supposedly the scene would have been in there regardless.

Also, MH definitely had more than a broken nose. His upper lip was injured- and he still has visible scars above it, and his front teeth were broken (he met his future wife at the dentist's office where he was having reconstructive dental-work).

Yeah, that's kinda annoyed me, too. Still, it does serve the story in one way since it's when Luke encounters Ben who tells him to go to Dagobah. We're just going to ignore the fact that Ben could have come to Luke any old way, but it would have been much less interesting had Luke just been sitting around talking to a 2-1B when suddenly Ben's ghost pops up and says, "Hey. Um, stop goofing around and go to Dagobah, lard ass!"

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Maybe he could just digitally alter Luke's face throughout the entire film, to look exactly as he did in Star Wars ... and, ya know, eliminate that whole Waampa business altogether!
