Turnabout is fair play, I say. The guy owes his career and fortune to Star Wars, which, let's be honest here - is only profitable because of a fanbase like us.

To insult said fanbase is calous, ignorant, and indicative of one thing - McCallum doesn't care about us, or Star Wars, just making money off of it.

We always knew that.

I wonder what McCalum will do when Lucas dies. Does he have a will of his own? Or will he just star blankly into space? Just kidding, just kidding.

I've sent a letter of complaint to Lucasfilm publicity regarding RM's comments in Total Film. He really pisses me off.

lynne.hale@lucasfilm.com
jim.ward@lucasfilm.com
john.singh@lucasfilm.com
publicity@lucasfilm.com

This is what I wrote:

Dear (Ms. Hale, Mr. Ward, Mr. Singh),

I am extremely upset about some of the comments Rick McCallum made in his interview for the most recent issue of Total Film magazine.

His comments were highly insulting and demeaning to Star Wars fans and I think he should apologize for what he said.

Until he does, I will not spend one more cent on any product with his or George Lucas' name on it.

Sincerely,

Mielr

I also gave RM a piece of my mind. I won't post that email here.

I have no idea if this is a real email address, but I'd like to think it is - LOL!

Unfortunately this is typical McCallum. Nothing really new here.

Yes, I find McCallum signifigantly more annoying than Lucas. I have ever since I've seen his interviews that are included in the Episode I DVD.

McCallum's position is simple. It's unbelieveable that anyone would want to see a version of "Star Wars" that doesn't have his name on it as producer. Anyone who does is strange in a delightfully damaged way. (You're especially damaged if you like Gary Kurtz.) Really, you have to be strange if you don't prefer the new versions that have Rick as the pilot in all computer generated x-wings, and as the model for the digitally created stormtrooper, etc. Also, don't forget that George is infallible as long as Rick is nearby, so George's original vision is only represented when Rick is involved.

In other words, it's ridiculous to believe that Rick McCallum will ever support anything "Star Wars" that does not bear his name, and does not contain work that he can lay claim to.

You know...I'm starting to feel like Dorothy, peeking behind the curtain and seeing the Wizard(s) exposed for what they really are.

What many see as artistic integrity in the LFL camp, I'm beginning to regard as cowardice. Lucas and LFL are always on the defense - anyone else notice this?

Of course the fansbase is unhappy with LFL. They've catered to the post-1983 crowd for far too long, forgetting that the "old timers" are the reason for Star Wars' endearing (to a fault) popularity thus far.

I still love Star Wars, but the thrill is gone (cue BB King).

What possible reason could he have for insulting the fans right before the movies are released again? We were already pissed that they half-assed it.

McCallum was very annoying on the RotS commentary but this just shows how out of touch he is. Are they just sick of the fans. Because they sure are acting like it. I've made my own videos and I would be estatic if so many people fell in love with something I did and gladly would pay for a copy. I made a highlight dvd for my high school hockey team. I was just learning to use my editing/dvd software and I only had a week to do it in time for the awards banquet. I didn't have much time to carefully scan through all the games and I thought the video ended up being too short with a lot of great footage not present.
It ended up selling like crazy at $25 a copy. Everyone loved it. I think the pressure I felt to finish it and the fact that it wasn't too long gave it a real intensity. The fight that broke out during the handshake line was also a big draw.
I think my struggle to just make something that I thought was half decent and ultimate success was similar to Lucas' struggle to make Star Wars (on a much smaller scale of course). The difficulties turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
Later, I did get a chance to go through all the tapes and capture the other interesting plays. But you know what. I didn't try to add new scenes or extend it. I just made a separate video of additional scenes.

I'm reminded of what Terry Gilliam said on the Criterion dvd of Brazil. He was willing to include the "Love conquers all version" despite having fought so hard for his cut to be shown. He said something like how he saw plenty of things wrong with his film today but he wasn't going to touch it because that's the way he made it.

Take back the trilogy. Execute Order '77

Well, I sent complaint emails to the addresses above- maybe it would be good if we all did that. If the publicity folks at LFL hear enough complaints, maybe they'll at least put a muzzle on RM.

Yes, I believe I admitted it was in my original post. Don't see how it's any more "immature" than the other justifiably angry posts by other members cussing him out and describing with detail the sexual acts that Rick must perform on George to keep his job. So thank you for singling me out, Mike.

This whole mess will never ruin Star Wars for me - I won't allow it to. Even if the best source for the OOT I'll ever have are the laserdiscs (which is what I assumed up until a month or so ago) or these new LD-master DVDs, GL and RM will never be able to control which versions of the OT I watch. Even if they're of a lesser quality than what they should be, I will still enjoy them. I enjoyed my pan-and-scan VHS tapes when that's all I had, so there's no reason why I can't enjoy the laserdiscs and the 9/12 DVDs.

I will buy these new DVDs, and unless they're released again down the line in a better format, it will be the LAST product of Lucasfilm's I will EVER buy.

Heh, I believe you made a rather accurate implication with the McCockum name.

Simply, McCallum is to Lucas what Smithers is to Mr. Burns.

His primary purpose in life is to praise every decision George Lucas ever made - which, I have to believe, could be confusing for Lucas. For example:

1997

"Rick, I'm thinking of adding Ian's scream from Jedi to Mark when he falls away from Vader in Empire."

"Oh, George, that's sensational! Wow! You've done it again! I'm glad this state of the art technology allows you, only now, to fulfill your Original Vision (TM)."

2004

"Rick, remember that scream we added to Luke in Empire? I'm considering removing it."

"Amazing! Sir, your intellect and judgment are boundless! I'm so glad we, at long last, have the means to bring to the screen your Original Vision (TM)!"

Heh, I just intended to use it the one time, since I was so pissed. I'm certainly not looking for the next "cool" immature catchphrase like the highly original and severely underused "Luca$", but I'll try to let my juvenile and immature qualities manifest themselves in other exciting and shocking ways in the future. Just stay tuned!

I find it hilarious that the "supposed" idea behind this release is to see 'which version' people prefer...oh sure, they'll find out with the sales of this release. Uh huh. Yeah. All they've been talking about during this time leading up to the release is discussing how the fans are dissappointed with the DVDs contents, and they haven't even come out yet. At Comiccon, now McCallum. Any news media with any intelligence has shot down the shitty way in which they're being "restored" or lack there-of.

OK, but writing to him with something like "You !@#$%^&*(ing !@#$%#, I hope you @##!@#$ in @#!# and #$# a $## you ()U&&" may make us feel better, but it won't help. We should tell him, in our delightfully derranged way, what he need to know about us and our feelings on the issue.

My sincerest apologies. It's just that JediRandy might be watching, and we don't need any more reasons for him to star insulting us. Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry.

Although I was annoyed with the comments Mr McCallum made, this thread wasn't started so that people could spout abuse and profanity at him. It was posted so that we could start, or indeed continue a discussion on the relationship McCallum has with Lucas and the Star Wars fans. Perhaps Rick has gone a step too far this time, but I don't think there is any need to get personal and stoop lower than his new level.

Thanks for everyone who made a valid comment. I think we can end things here, before we get carried away.

I appreciate the apology. It's okay. Like I said, I know my remark was juvenile, and I don't usually go for the sex-based nicknames, so I thought once wouldn't hurt. But I have to give props to whoever it was in the "Who's More Annoying" thread who came up with a much better nickname than mine... I don't even remember what it was anymore.

How will they be able to tell which versions people prefer if they are sold together? Selling them seperately would be a far more useful way of telling which versions the fans want.

LFL need a way to sell of their remaining 05 discs, and the OOT could be a selling point. This is an attempt to sell the SE again, not an attempt to release the OOT, I would guess. There all kinds of conspiricy theories one could place around it, from Lucas attempting to make this release sell poorly so that he can wash his hands of the OOT, to him using it to test the waters for future releases (And since Lucas is such a shrewd businessman, It would make a lot of sense for him to include a remastered OOT in the 30th anniversary boxed set for an eye-gouging price, because he knows that people like me would pay anything for it), but at this point, who knows.

So was the 2004 set considered a success or not? If there's actually enough leftover discs to have a whole new release, that sounds like a LOT of discs. The Indiana Jones set is a year older and still hasn't been repackaged or sold separately.
