Photosyth - The 'Star Wars' possibilities

Microsoft have just annouced in the press, their new photo stitching software - Photosynth. Well it's actually a bit more than stitching software.

Photosynth

"With Photosynth you can:

Walk or fly through a scene to see photos from any angle.
Seamlessly zoom in or out of a photograph whether it’s megapixels or gigapixels in size.
See where pictures were taken in relation to one another.
Find similar photos to the one you’re currently viewing.
Explore a custom tour.
Send a collection to a friend."

Fristly it looks fantastic, secondly I was wondering about the possibilities in the Star Wars fan community.

Imagine stitching together all the set photographs of the Hoth base, or Jabba's Sail Barge and being able to 'fly around' looking at it from 'any' angle. Obviously I understand the limitations but I think the possibilities could be fascinating.

I feel several projects coming on!

It's almost like those sites where you can view a picture at 360 degrees....except EXTREME!!!! I still think that it's a little bit too ambitious. I mean, sure people take lots of pictures, but finding enough pictures from all the right angles to make the thing smooth sailing to use would be so near impossible. You'd almost have to have gruops of people out everywhere taking pictures of things for hours from all angles. But still, I hope that I can see it for myself someday if they can make it work.

I wish they had another video showing just some awesome examples of places they've worked on.

Hey look, a bear!

It certainly looks like a very impressive way to view photographs at least. The internet linking concept is also pretty sweet. However, I don't believe it would be a great tool for simulating two-dimensionally pictured environments in three dimensions. For that to be truly successful you'd probaby need a medium that records three dimensional data in the first place.
