www.dvdempire.com O-OT pre-orders rankings (updated)

Author
Time
Well, our non-anamorphic O-OT DVD's aren't even in the top 10 of pre-orders on www.dvdempire.com:

As of July 30, 2006:

Star Wars #23

The Empire Strikes Back #41

Return of the Jedi #40

I will update this every once in a while up to September 12th, and see if these movie move up the list. But if a SW movie is not ranked in the top 10 of any pre-order alittle over 1 month in advance, I don't see this as a huge seller. So, either Lucas will get the hint cause the bad quality, or he will say, "See, I told you nobody wanted them, but a small vocal minority."

I think very few people know about this release yet. If I didn't have a subscription to Star Wars Insider, I wouldn't have known about it either. Once the TV ads start, the pre-orders will start to pick up.

I hope so. I'll be checking Amazon. Everyone keep their fingers crossed. Oh, and CO, if they didn't sell well, you know that he'd do the latter.

I find it weird that ROTJ is a little bit higher than ESB!

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Maybe people find the SE changes more objectionable in ROTJ than in ESB- I know I do!

Two possible reasons why they aren't in the Top 10.

1) People don't know about the DVDs.
2) People do know about the DVDs.

"I find it weird that ROTJ is a little bit higher than ESB!"

By one ranking?

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

Lets put it this way, if there was only one O-OT I could have in Anamorphic, it would be ROTJ. I hate with a passion the Hayden as force ghost change, I hate it so much, it is the reason I hate the SE because it is insulting for anyone who watched the movie since 1983.

I hate it, I hate it, I hate it. Sorry about my anger, but I hate that change over everything else, so with ESB being the least touched of the 3 movies, I can see ROTJ being higher.

As of August 2, 2006:

Star Wars # 17

ESB # 47

ROTJ # 46

I will be very interested to see what these are at right after Labor Day, when the advertising is in full swing. It still goes to show the power of the original SW and the fanbase that movie has, it is the only SW movie that appeals to the masses.

I don't know, I always thought that ESB was the favorite among die-hard fans.

In any case, all 3 will move up when the marketing starts, as you said.

It takes more than die-hard fans to generate sales to make these kind of rankings. It takes lots of casual fans and viewers as well. These numbers are starting to make me feel better, because I think the only chance we have of ever getting a high-quality O-OT on DVD from Lucas is high sales on this one. I think alot of the higher ranking of Star Wars and the lower ranking of ESB has to do with the fact that Star Wars has the most changes, and ESB has the fewest.

This is raising my hopes ever so slightly. I haven't seen any commercials yet. Perversely, I hope that these discs sell well and that Lucas gets the message. I wonder if they'll even be advertised. Oh, wait, it's Lucasfilm. Of course they will. I hope to God that they sell well. Everyone cross their fingers. And pray.

In any case, all 3 will move up when the marketing starts, as you said.

I hope so. When will the marketing start? You'd think that Lucasfilm would be marketing the hell out of these discs, just because they have the SW logo on them.

As I said, if you have any religious beliefs, stary praying.

"Sales of the OOT would go at least head to head with the SEs."

Jay Sylvester. I hope so. Everyone cross their fingers. Maybe we can still win this.

Please God.

Some DVD's ahead of the ANH OOT DVD:
Robin Hood: Men In Tights
Poseidon (Widescreen)
Police Squad!

Some DVD's ahead of the final 2 films of the OT
Romancing The Stone / Jewel Of The Nile (2 Pack)
Remington Steele: Seasons 4 & 5

Phew. I guess the OOT DVD really were "In Demand".

I think there could be guilt factor in the possible low sales. People who were planning to buy it will fell guilty for wrecking film history by getting a poorly made DVD, because it is a vote that Lucas's actions are OK. Either way Lucas will win.

Um, I don't know about Poseidon, but the rest of those you mentioned are pretty good popular titles, so I'm not quite seeing your point unless the point is that the Star Wars movies have been released so many times that people are rightfully getting sick of them.

The marketing will likely start towards the end of August, getting ready for the 9/12 release, with a big push after Thanksgiving for the Christmas shopping season, reminding people that they're going out of print after December 31st.

They were, but as they are being released as substandard transfers, lots of people don't want to buy that.

Just checked the Sci-Fi DVD rankings on Amazon.com:

SW 38
ROTJ 56
ESB 57

Maybe all those non-anamorphic reviews are working the charm?

What? You mean the great and infallible Lucasfilm cannot generate interest for their individually packaged (!!!) release of the 2004 DVDs?! I thought that was supposed to be the main attraction here. Weren't you demanding individual packages like the good, little, Lucasfilm-crony you are? Haven't you pre-ordered this limited opportunity, yet?

I'm skipping this release because I don't want some crappy, bonus-feature edition of the original trilogy.

"good, little, Lucasfilm-crony"

Nice. That's a new one.

customers won't buy them because they're packaged with the 2004 versions which they got when they bought the boxset and don't want to buy the same disk twice. that's all.

Seriously. Talk about ripping people off. We aren't that stupid. (I'd hope.)

Yes, but then we have the catch 22 in which Lucas will say that there is not demand for the OOT.

True, but that would be a really, really stupid assumption on his part.

If the theatrical releases were given a high quality, digital master to DVD, with mutliple audio tracks available, and filled with other historical information and special features, it would make a lot of money. With this kind of OT release, most casual Star Wars fans probably couldn't give a shit (because of the sub-par treatment), much less think they should buy the same 2004 DVDs a second time just to get it.

I hope you're right, I really do. But I do think that these discs will sell reasonaably well, if LFL ever get off of their butts and star advertising them.
