This thread is great! I'll try to send emails to everyone on the list.

Again, here are the email addresses for the folks at Lucasfilm (in case anyone's interested):

lynne.hale@lucasfilm.com
jim.ward@lucasfilm.com
john.singh@lucasfilm.com
publicity@lucasfilm.com

What about film preservation organizations, like AFI? Film preservationists are strictly against altering classic films, I wonder if there might be some sort of angle here in terms of George Lucas saying that the original trilogy can't be put on a DVD in anamorphic film because essentially the films supposedly "don't exist" anymore. Hearing that will piss the preservationists off to no end.

AFI:

The Association of Moving Image Archivists:

Also, I wonder if the Library of Congress has complete prints for all three films?

- Sorry for empty post -

BRA-VO Mielr, posting directly to Lucasfilms should be extremely enjoyable (if not likely to have any effect, sadly).

The AFI and AMI angles are very good suggestions, they certainly should know about this.

People are doing a great job here

In answer to your question, the Library of Congress would HAVE TO have prints of all three films, as they must have copies of all printed/filmed material on record. Lucas saying that there are no prints is misleading at best, an outright fib at worst.
Do or do not...there is no try. And if that don't work, go pay somebody to do it.

I have another email address for Roger Ebert. I sent him an email once, and got a reply from this address:

He replied:

I think they're feeling hopeful...

I guess MaxiVision didn't make it- because their website isn't working anymore. He had discussed MaxiVision on his TV show, and said how far superior it was to any of the digital projection systems that the movie industry seem to be heading towards.

Given that about 75,000 people signed the petition, perhaps Jay could enlist their support and we could all agree on a specific day to send e-mails. Given the influx of new members, if these addresses all recieved 75,000+ e-mails on the same topic on same day, it'd be hard for them to ignore. Just a suggestion.

Thanks. I'm new here. It's nice to feel welcome.

"In answer to your question, the Library of Congress would HAVE TO have prints of all three films, as they must have copies of all printed/filmed material on record. Lucas saying that there are no prints is misleading at best, an outright fib at worst."

Didn't Lucas do everything that he could to destroy all possible prints of the original versions of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi to ensure that the SE are only versions in existence? And then there is the question of the 35mm stereo, the 70 mm six-track, and the mono.

I put this in another thread, but it should go here, too...

I've just sent an email to 20th Century Fox home video, saying that I "can't imagine" that the original Star Wars trilogy would be presented in a shoddy, non-anamorphic transfer from an old laserdisc master, as the LFL press release stated it would be.

Maybe complaining to Fox will put some additional pressure on LFL to make new transfers for the DVD. Here's the email address:

Thanks for all of the email addresses, Mielr. All we can do is make our voices heard, now with correspondence or later by withholding our money. Like a lot of us fans are, I'm pretty burned out on worrying about what Lucas will or won't do, so my email was pretty much just polite brass tacks. I can't get that emotionally involved any more.

We should probably keep up the contact. Here's what I wrote to Lynne Hayle, Jim Ward, Fox Studios and the others that you provided the addresses for:

"Dear Lucasfilm and Fox Studios,

Please, reconsider the plans for the upcoming September DVD release of the original theatrical versions of the Star Wars Trilogy, three of the most popular and beloved movies in film history.

It would be wonderful if they could be enjoyed in the industry-standard anamorphic format that maximizes the presentation regardless of the final screen on which the DVDs are displayed.

Sincerely,
Michael Banks,
Star Wars Fan"

Nothing flowery; just facts and disappointment.

Lucas appears to have been deaf for the past 20 years or so. Now, it seems, that he's gotten a cheap hearing aid. Let's help him get a better one.

I doubt that he appreciates what has been done to his work. If anyone can find contacts for big-time Hollywoodites like Spielberg, Sam Raimi, etc., the post them too. It's time to take the battle to Lucas.

Is there any way to cordinate all of this? As I said, since over 75,000 people signed the petition and the forum has an influx of new members, if we all made some noise at once, we could turn up the volume and maybe get some attention. And I think that if AFI and othersuch organizations got wind of this, they'd never let Lucas here the end of it.

This seems like a logical step! Can this be done? I don't want our side of this stupid situation to come out sounding like we're just a bunch of whiners when other lesser movies get the honor of anamorphic transfers from high quality sources. I mean, for heaven's sake! Star Wars is on the Academy's "100 Most Important Films" list, isn't it?

I finally dropped another batch of emails to Lucasfilm and Fox courtesy of Mielr's contact info. Thanks, again, Mielr!

Has anyone gotten any significant response from either company? My last batch netted no response whatsoever.

Thanks to Quint's article on AICN, I had a little extra ammunition to give my complaint some strength and credence (I hope).

I tried to make it personal by telling them that I'm a lifelong fan from childhood who is disappointed in the sub-standard treatment that the OOT is apparently getting. I just want it to be clear that there is reason to be upset by the upcoming release.

You're welcome! I sent duplicates of my emails out to the Lucasfilm people, but I still haven't received a response. I got an email from Leonard Maltin, but it wasn't very encouraging.

I have an idea- how about if we pick one place to send an email out to every week- we can start a thread for it, and ask everyone here that week to send their email to that particular place. Everyone can confirm in the thread that they've sent their email, and even paste the text of their email into the thread (if they wish). Next week, same thing only a different place. That way, we can be sure that the emails will all be going to the same place that week, and it will have more impact that way.

I worried that we may be falling into that "all talk-no action" trap here- it doesn't do any good to just complain to each other. I agree that need to get organized.

This makes perfect sense, as I'm convinced there are now so many mail-adresses in this thread that it might well be discouraging - and yes, making a couple of MASSIVE mailings to single destinations surely will have more impact than the most passionate/patient of us mailing to a hundred different people/papers.

Someone, like the webmaster ( ) should take this in his hands and name a date and an adress to mail, so everyone can join in one big hit.

I actually regain some hope, just imagining this!

Well, I even if Jay doesn't want to do this (he's probably busy with other things- and who can blame him) there's no reason why we can't do it ourselves.

Any suggestions as to what organization we should start with?

I just received my first AND second reply from any Lucas or Fox representative!

John Singh of Lucasfilm, Ltd. Publicity emailed me an "out-of-office reply" first but followed up with a personalized email! And he sounds like a nice enough guy.

Below are my email and his two replies. Interestingly enough, he answers my concern for the quality of the DVDs as reported by Quint of Aint-It-Cool-News.com by stating that "[t]hose who have been communicating their opinions and beliefs online have not seen the DVDs." He also says something about the care that went into re-mastering the movies in 2004, but it is unclear as to what this is to mean for the original theatrical versions of the Trilogy.

I will be replying to him requesting clarification (straight from the source) as to the sources for the DVDs. More to come once he replies!

The emails:

Mine:

Dear Lucasfilm and Fox Studios,

It is very disappointing to hear from Quint of Ain't-It-Cool-News ( http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=23941 ) reporting from Comic-Con that the upcoming release of the original and unaltered theatrical release of the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD is not looking good.

The material being put on DVD that has been created from the 1993 LaserDisc masters sounds sub-standard ("A little washed out, pixelated and strobey"), hardly the treatment that these classic, culturally-phenomenal blockbusters should be given.

As a lifelong fan of these films from childhood, I feel personally slighted that Lucasfilm, which consistently pushes the envelope in regard to cinema technology, would resign itself to release this watershed epic in such a disappointingly shoddy fashion.

Please, reconsider the plans for the upcoming September DVD release of the original theatrical versions of the Star Wars Trilogy, three of the most popular and beloved movies in film history.

It would be wonderful and fitting for them to created from a truly high quality source and for them to be offered in the industry-standard anamorphic format that so many lesser movies have been honored with.

Sincerely,
Michael Banks,
Lifelong Fan

Dear Michael,

Thank you for your note. We genuinely appreciate your concerns. It is precisely because the "Star Wars" movies are among the "most popular and beloved movies in film history," as you so nicely put it, that they were remastered and restored with great attention to detail and enormous care in 2004.

I hope you will have a chance to see these first versions of the movies on DVD when they come out. Those who have been communicating their opinions and beliefs online have not seen the DVDs.

I'm sure I speak for the others you cc'd when I say thank you for your passion and your enthusiasm for "Star Wars." It is truly, sincerely appreciated.

Excellent, darkhelmet!

I still haven't received a response from Lucasfilm.

Did you read my idea above? Do you have any suggestions as to whom we should contact first? I'd like for us to get our first round of emails out this week, if possible.

Author

Maybe we could start with John Singh. The only thing that concerns me is that our emails en masse might get in the way of his day-to-day business and make us a combative presence and not just a concerned citizenry.

We might become the bad guy that we don't want to become in the media's eyes. What do you think? I mean, what if the number of emails amounted to flaming his in-box? I don't think that's how we want this to play out.

Maybe a mass email to all of originaltrilogy.com's petition signers to sign a new petition that we could send over and over again (without the flaming part)?
