POLL: Quality Of The Star Wars Products

I voted yes.

For two reasons that spring to mind.....the first is, of course, the OOT release this fall. Enough has been said about that already. The second is about Star Wars Galaxies. For those who don't know, that was a MMORPG video game, sort of like Elfquest. The game had high hopes, but did nothing but disappoint. It also ended up being a total ripoff and betrayed any players who invested a lot of time in the game. The game was run by Sony Online, but LucasArts still had to have some say in how the game was handled. That game was such a waste of time.

For the whole sorry history, check it out at Wikipedia and go towards the bottom.

I really don't collect much new Star Wars stuff anymore. When I do buy some Star Wars-related item, it's usually a vintage item from eBay.

There was a time when I collected SW stuff pretty actively. That stopped after TPM came out. I just lost all interest at that point. And now, they just keep releasing and re-releasing toys and collectibles ten times over...same shit in a different package. And how many variations of a single figure are really necessary? They just slap the Star Wars name on anything today. This list of products is really embarrassing, and I don't think they sell too well given the mountain of SW crap I've seen in discount bins in recent years. The quality of the toys has really gone south, and the prices are insane when you compare what a SW figure costs versus a McFarlane figure or something. Just a shameful ripoff. I haven't purchased a Star Wars collectible in about seven years, and I got rid of most of the more recent junk, keeping only that which I grew up with, and some cool props (not MR) like lightsabers and blasters that I tracked down the original parts for and built over the years.

To be fair, is it really right to lump dozens of vendors together under one yes/no category? MR has been mentioned already. Gentle Giant has a lot of great looking high quality stuff. And while the Hasbro line releases alot of repeats, the quality, accuracy and paint job is incredible. And to balance out the repeats, Hasbro is releasing a large number of new sculpts (my new R5-D4 is one my favorites) and new figures that have never seen the light of day before. Major Derlin has been on my wishlist for a long time.

As far as the video releases go, I'd say they GENERALLY get better. Whether one or not if agrees with all of the the video changes, the movies generally LOOK better. Generally. Hopefully, the OUT releases will look as good as the VHS releases and most of the laserdiscs. At any rate, the OOT hopefully won't look any worse in the future.

DVD covers? They get worse and worse.
