Hmm.. I did not know that. Still though, I'm sure somebody with a good knowledge of Star Trek continuity could come up with a good idea for a movie based around Captain Pike.

So was being wheelchair-bound what got him taken off the Enterprise? Doesn't seem very fair, especially in a politically correct Star Trek universe. All Starfleet captains really do is sit in a chair all day anyway , and I imagine you can get some pretty badass hover-wheelchairs in the future. In fact, I'm pretty damn sure they could easily undo his paralysis with the help of some nanobots or some other trekky-future technology.

if im not mistaken, that episode was actually the original pilot episode (well the story told in it was) it was one of those 'flashback' episodes, i believe they used a trial if my memory serves me correctly. they showed clips of the mission with captain pike's crew (the clips were from the original pilot)

the only character that survived the original pilot was Spock. They felt that the audience wouldnt buy the 2nd in command being female (it was actually gene rodenbury's wife). not sure if there was any other reason they scrapped that pilot or not.

*edit* just went back and read the whole thread and noticed that HSvIIJ mentioned the pilot episode. i couldnt quite remember the title of it but HSvIIJ mentioned it in his post 'The Cage'

I didn't like how, as the Next Generation films went along, Picard seemed to morph into Kirk. I like Kirk, in fact I prefer Kirk Trek over TNG Trek, but if I'm going to sit down and watch a Picard Trek, I expect Picard to act like Picard and not like Kirk.

Oh boy; Trek talk! This should be interesting. Geek time! Just kidding. Hasn't Jeffery Hunter passed away?

Rick Berman should be jailed for cruelty to animals. Specifically: Beating a dead horse.

I take it you don't care much for post-Kirk Trek?

I always found it kind of funny that both Berman and McCallum are deviant looking individuals, only second in command (or Berman was until Roddenberry died) to a Sci-Fi legacy. If I were to put anyone in my Axis Of Evil....it'd definately be those two for their continuing influence on Wars & Trek.

"The Menagerie" never makes clear how his command of the Enterprise ended nor is it clear if was still the Captain of the Enterprise at the time of the accident.

you are correct The first pilot was "The Cage" Pike was the Captain of the Enterprise in it, Spock was in it as well. The 2nd in command on Pike's ship was Roddenberry's wife She would go on to play Nurse Chapel in TOS and Troy's mother in Nextgen. The Cage was never aired, the Network execs didn't think Trek was good enough. But, they let Roddenberry film another Pilot(imagine what the Sci-Fi world would be like he had been unable to film the 2nd Pilot). The 2nd pilot is the Episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before" it had Kirk in command, it aired and thus TOS was started. Scenes from "The Cage" were used the TOS episode "The Menagerie", thus making "The Cage" and Pike part of the Offical Canon.

Post-Kirk isn't the problem. Post-Nextgen series and Post-Roddenberry is what the problem is.

Well then that leaves it wide open for a movie. I truly believe Hollywood should hire everyone on this forum as 'ideas guys'. You need a new idea or you need an existing one improved, we'll get it done!

He wasn't only wheelchair bound, but completely paralysed. He communicates via two different colored lights on his wheelchair. The thing has wheels and everything. Even for the year 2006 the technology they had for him was dated. They really should just disregard all of the original series, I wish they would not waste time making episodes to explain the smoothness of Klingon foreheads. If an episode with paralysed Pike were to be shown today he would have a floating hover-wheelchair, a Stephen Hawkin's like voice OR they would have just repaired him with nanobots.

Actually when I first heard rumors of Enterprise, I thought it would be cool if they went with Captian Pike. I think they could make an interesting movie around him. However I am really getting tired of prequels, why not take a different approach and move some 40 or so years past the TNG/DS9/Voyager times. It would be cool to see what new threats are around and to see what old ones are and are not still around.

Yeah, I agree - a series or movie set many years after TNG etc would be more interesting.

What was the explanation for the Kilingon heads, BTW? I stopped watching Enterprise after Season 1.

Yeah, I stopped watching Enterprise after just a short while also, but when it was announced that the show was being cancelled they decided to use all the ideas they had been planning to use eventually. Some of these ideas sounded interesting so I starting watching it again for a bit. They came up with some stupid thing that the Klingons tried using the eugenics drugs (you know, the whole Khan thing), but since the drugs where for humans it turned the Klingons heads smooth, and then I guess it became contagious or something and spread. It honestly didn't make any sense, and I was only half watching it, I was in disbelief they actually decided to devote a two part episode to explain 1960s lack of makeup technology on a budget. I think at this point I stopped watching the show again. I did see the final which really couldn't have been any worse than it was. I think it even beat Voyager as Star Trek's worse series final.

Perhaps Enterprise should have been about Pike...

maybe, but you'd have problems trying to find someone to play the younger spock and as before there are limits as to what you and do with the Pike character.
