Lucas Announces Plans for Prequel Special Editions
by Hugh Ken Knott B. Seriuz

After years of frustration, George Lucas will finally get the Star Wars prequels exactly the way he wanted them to be. The 62-year-old filmmaker plans to have the Special Editions released in 2009, for the 10th Anniversary of Phantom Menace. This time, Lucas feels he will finally have the films that he first invisioned back in 1975.

"The prequels just didn't turn out the way I originially intended them to be. The voiceover performances in all three prequels was terrible and the acting left too much to be desired. I just didn't have the technology to achieve the quality writing and acting that I needed back in the late 90's and in the first half of the 00's."

According to Lucas, Phantom Menace will no longer feature Jar Jar Binks. Thanks to the magic of cgi, Binks will be deleted and replaced by a new character to be voiced by Chris Tucker. Lucas has also decided to digitally remove Jake Lloyd to replace him with Ryan Gosling. Gosling will then be digitally inserted into the other two prequels.

Among the other changes are the following:
-Several dialogue passages will be removed and be replaced by new dialogue written by Lawrence Kasdan.
-Several scenes with Natalie Portman will be reshot to include Ryan Gosling.
-The character Qui-Gon Jinn will be digitally removed and Obiwan will be the one who discovers Anakin and takes him under his wing. Jinn will also be deleted from the lightsaber duel and Obiwan will just defeat Maul.
-The words "midichlorians" and "padawan" will be deleted.
-Padme will no longer die in childbirth. Instead, she will go into hiding with the Organa's and she would eventually die 6 years later.
-Prequel Yoda would be replaced by ESB Yoda, except for action scenes.

Other changes will be determined.

"Finally, I will get the prequels I originally envisioned back in the 70's."

Yeah it was a joke. And wishful thinking.

Ah, if only.

Hmm, wonder what Hugh Ken Knott B. Seriuz's website is? We could email him about this, haha.
I have a bad feeling about this...

Awesome post.

So many of those changes would be sweet. It kind of makes me feel dirty thinking that though, since it requires the special-edition mindset.

An edit with Jar-Jar's lines being replaced with some of Chris Rock's lines from his movies would be a pisser.

Seeing Jar Jar spouting Chris' lines from Jay and Silent Bob about his coffee would make my day.

Aren't Lucas's real tweaked SEs of the PT due next year?

No, his tweaked SEs of the prequels came out in 2000, 2002, and 2005 with the DVD releases.

I know, but isn't he going to change them even more? I thought that that was a given at this point. Ah well, we'll find out next year, I suppose.

As long as the boxed set includes a remastered OOT, I wouldn't particularly care what he does to the prequels. There's always the CG Yoda he wanted to add to TPM.

The Notebook....in space?

but why?

P.S. I was always under the impression that Neeson as Qui-Gonn was one of the few things most people approved of in The Phantom Menace! Don't tell me, you decided to erase him based on that "was I much different when you taught me" malarky! heh

He'll probably give the Prequel Trilogy a once over for the 2007 edition, with the addition of Digi-Yoda for Phantom and whatever else he wants to tinker with. Not even PT fans can escape the wrath of Darth Lucas.

No, I think most of us feel the same way I do. He was a good character, but he detracted from Obi-Wan's established character by doing all the things and acting in all the ways that should have been Obi-Wan.

For me, Liam Neeson was the few redeeming qualities in TPM. It's too bad his talent was wasted so.

Neeson was the highlight of Menace, but he essentially WAS Obiwan Kenobi in that film. If Lucas had cast Neeson to play Obiwan in the prequels, I doubt people would have objected. He was probably closer to the age that he should have been. McGreggor was very good in Sith though but in Menace he was very dull.

What do you mean specifically by this?

I thought the relationship between those two was definately one if not the only saving grace of TPM. I enjoyed how Obi-Wan was clearly on the edge of becoming a Knight, however we still saw his character learn and be somewhat defiant infront of his master and thus become more fleshed out in that sense. For him to be the Master right away could have worked but it was more interesting to see him earning his stripes and thus allow the audience to see how he attained the rank of Jedi Knight.

yep. I must admit, it would be hard to resist the lure of the Digi-Yoda for TPM....although I could see buying that version being more worth it had Yoda been in the film more than he was.

You may joke about Prequel Special Editions. There's a TPM scene in the 'ROTS' extras with the puppet Yoda replaced by a CGI yoda!? I think I brought it to people's attention on this very forum last year.

Of course, if Lucas ever did plan to do that to the PT, that would be his justification.

"I didn't have the materials."
"I didn't have the money."

He won't say
"I didn't have the brainpower."

I'm not saying it didn't come across well, and it wasn't enjoyable. I'm just saying that, based on what we heard in the original trilogy, Qui-Gon essentially is Obi-Wan, and Obi-Wan is just somebody else. Qui-Gon does all the things and acts the way that Old Ben described himself in the OT. Qui-Gon found Anakin. Qui-Gon was immediately impressed with Anakin. Qui-Gon tried to take it upon himself to train Anakin without the approval of the council. It was Obi-Wan who disliked Anakin. It was Obi-Wan who tried to reign his master in. It was Obi-Wan who told Qui-Gon to follow the council. It was Obi-Wan who said the boy was dangerous. See what I'm getting at? Like I said, it's not bad from a dramatic standpoint. Their relationship was one of the good things about the prequels, but it just doesn't make any sense.

I think it's pretty obvious that the character of Qui-Gon was written as Obi-Wan and that the younger Obi-Wan was added when the (terrible) decision was made to have Anakin be younger than Luke was in SW.

Yup. In fact in the first draft of TPM, Qui Gon doesn't appear until the coruscant scenes; Kenobi is already a full knight who discovers Anakin on Tattooine, believes in him and barters for his freedom in order to train him--then Qui Gon, Kenobi's former master, tags along from Coruscant onward and gets killed by Maul at the end.
