Star Wars 3-D?

So I thought special glasses weren't necessary for this new 3-D technology? According to an article over on starwars.com, wireless glasses (along with a laundry list of other items) are required.

"George and Rick are really excited about the technology they have seen in 3-D... they showed about 10 minutes of Star Wars at a trade industry show about a year ago, and there was a lot of great buzz. Well, a couple of things have turned out. You have to look at the business plan: When does it make sense to do something like that? And you need thousands of digital screen theaters. It does not work on a film projector... This may be the thing that is finally going to force a lot of theater chains to bring in digital projectors at least for one of their screens... A lot of theater chains have announced they are going ahead. That said, how long is it going to take to get three- to four- to five thousand theaters digitally converted? It's not going to happen this year. It's not going to happen by the end of next year. In addition, the process to do the movie turns out to be a little more expensive than initially thought. So you have the theaters converting, you have the costs of converting one or all of the six Star Wars movies into 3-D, and you have the fact that the technology involves wireless battery-operated glasses that blink maybe a thousand times a second; it's not like a read and blue lens. So you have to take all those factors into consideration. I think Lucasfilm is still very interested in releasing the saga in 3-D. I think it's really just a matter of time, but I don't think it's going to be in the next couple of years."

So with theater attendance down, they're expecting movie theaters to make this huge investment in a new technology? I just don't see why they'd make the investment in this when a lot of theaters still haven't made the jump to digital. Not to mention that I can just see a lot of wireless goggles disappearing after every viewing, just like the special glasses at Disneyland disappear. I hope those glasses are cheap or have some kind of tracking technology. I don't think a theater would like to lose several pair after each viewing.

This is the stupidest godd**n thing I've heard in awhile. I had been telling myself the 3D thing was just a joke for a long time now, but... I should have known better.

Death, what the hell are you doing, man? Get on this SOB quick.

Well, at least we know that it isn't likely for the 30th anniversary. Improved special effects techniques, powerhouse stars, 3-D technology, and audiences still aren't packing in. Perhaps you should try making good movies? Just a thought. Lucas and Rick appear to be in this together.

They don't even have to make good movies. Make the atmosphere better and I'll start going again. Kick people out when their phone rings. Offer assigned seating. Start the movie at the time you say it starts (not 20 mins later after the damn ads). Remove the ads (I payed to see the movie, not the ads). Aside from the ads, the only place around here that does all that (and has a no kids policy) is the ArcLight. I'd go there, but it's all the way up in Hollywood (I'm in Orange County). I wouldn't mind paying $15 per ticket, but the gas and time it takes are what kills the idea now. If there was a theater like that within a 15 min drive, I'd go in a heartbeat.

Good movies obviously help, but I haven't been to a movie since Serenity (which I loved). I use to go to midnight showings all the time. It was the only place where you could gaurantee that everyone would turn off their cell phones, not bring crying children (the babies that were brought would always sleep through the movie without making a sound), and not talk or yell at the screen. The only thing missing was assigned seating, but even that wasn't a big problem with the size of the theater (and I didn't mind getting there early to wait in line for a good spot). Since getting married and having a pregnant wife at home that has to work at 7am, that hasn't been an option anymore (Ep 3 was the last time and I made special arrangements to sleep at a friends near the theater).

Depending on what theater we go to, I can almost gaurantee that someones phone will ring, which completely ruins the experience for me.

I honestly hope they never get this technology going in wide use and I hope theater attendance continues to drop. I'll still buy the movies on DVD, so I'll get a lot more value for my money (no annoying cell phones, pause for the bathroom, rewind to hear that line I missed, etc, etc).

It's a shame this company, that is so concerned with the costs of making a good OT set on DVD/next gen discs, can blow so much on doing something that is unnecessary. Wouldn't it be nice if Lucasfilm said something like, "Okay - it will take a lot of work to restore our film for a good comprehensive OT, and we won't have it for you by next year, but it is coming." Instead we get news about Lucasfilm's continued dedication toward this 3D thing that no one has ever really asked for.

Do those things really sound safe? I'm sure epileptics won't be able to use them. Jesus.

It has been a while since I last heard of the infamous SE-OT in 3D, so I guess it's back in order to have the franchise name going, eh? About these goggles: these are models that are being used nowadays and there's nothing new about them, they simply shut down one eye at a time in synch with the film, and has no side-effects, at least nothing that a regular movie cannot cause.

Like I said a hundred times before, Lucas will inevitably insist that the OT was meant to be 3-d, even though the idea wasnt revived until the 80s

Heh. This 3D nonsense is so stupid. Until they can produce real depth perception this is all a crappy gimmick. Who'd want to have stupid glasses flashing against their eyes?

Aah, gross! As if the song isn't bad enough...

Ooh, they could have snow and wind during the snowstorm on Hoth. And mist on Dagobah. And more wind in the scene where Luke gets bombarded with heavy objects. Hey, the audience could get bombarded, too, come to think of it...

Okay, I'm having a little too much fun with an idea I'm not particularly crazy about.

I have a bad feeling about this...

I would like to say now that, if this ever happens and I go to see it, I WILL steal the glasses.

It's not a terribly bad idea, especially if they did incorporate physical elements like that. However, it just reeks of milking the cash cow. And they'd be spending their time more constructively if they did something decent with the OOT instead.

Everything reeks of milking the cash cow. From the figures to the TV series to the rereleased DVDs. This coming from a man that said he would be done with Star Wars once ROTS came out. Move on my ass. I think he's going to find out that if it doesn't say Star Wars, no one wants it from him. And if it does say Star Wars, a lot of people are giving it more scrutiny lately.

You don't push technology forward by sitting back and waiting to see what happens. Lucasfilm has been pushing theaters to switch to digital projectors since 2000-2001. These days, you finally see major chains converting their equipment to digital. Theater attendance is down, that is a well known fact, but I think theater owners are going to realize that the only way to bring attendance back up is to offer something that they can't get at home. And that's where this new 3D technology comes in. That article says that they can play the 3D movies on the already existing digital projectors. All that needs to happen is for enough theaters to convert to digital so that making 3D movies is worth the investment.

Did anyone see Superman Returns in the IMAX? I thought it was pretty cool that some of the scenes were in 3D. This new technology is supposed to be much more advanced.

wireless battery-operated glasses that blink maybe a thousand times a second

That's insane..on so many levels. They don't need to blink any more than 100 times a second at the most, probably closer to 50 would be something they might try to obtain. I wanna see a picture of someone wearing some glasses with a 12volt car battery hanging off each ear to power them. Yeah, thats a comfy way to watch a movie. The hummmmm would drone out the noise of any movie.

I'm so freakin old (43 and 3 days) , I remember when they did a update on the 3d movie process back in the 70's. Was pretty funny. I'm a sucker for that kinda stuff though. I remember when the used to promote movies with Sensesurround or some thing like that. Earthquake was promoted like that, and Battle for Midway I think. I think it was just huge subwoofers cranked up so you could feel the pounding in your chest, but at the time it was promoted as something not every cinema could do, as though it may shake the foundations.

I had the scratch and sniff card I kept from seeing Polyester at a midnight session on it's first run too, but I lost it a couple of years ago. That was a fun idea. The whole cinema groaning and roaring with laughter when they scratched one of the numbers as it flashed up on screen, and it was dirty socks. George, with his love of poo-jokes, should latch onto that gimmick. He could just fill the whole card with different kinds of poo.

But the OOT doesn't exist anymore, remember? Even though its been released now. I wonder if LFL are doing anything to the film prints at all, SE or OOT, good, bad, or indifferent, other than trying to make it 3-D. The 30th anniversary boxed set...I wonder what it will be...I wonder if I will care.
