So with theater attendance down, they're expecting movie theaters to make this huge investment in a new technology? I just don't see why they'd make the investment in this when a lot of theaters still haven't made the jump to digital. Not to mention that I can just see a lot of wireless goggles disappearing after every viewing, just like the special glasses at Disneyland disappear. I hope those glasses are cheap or have some kind of tracking technology. I don't think a theater would like to lose several pair after each viewing.

You don't push technology forward by sitting back and waiting to see what happens. Lucasfilm has been pushing theaters to switch to digital projectors since 2000-2001. These days, you finally see major chains converting their equipment to digital. Theater attendance is down, that is a well known fact, but I think theater owners are going to realize that the only way to bring attendance back up is to offer something that they can't get at home. And that's where this new 3D technology comes in. That article says that they can play the 3D movies on the already existing digital projectors. All that needs to happen is for enough theaters to convert to digital so that making 3D movies is worth the investment.
Did anyone see Superman Returns in the IMAX? I thought it was pretty cool that some of the scenes were in 3D. This new technology is supposed to be much more advanced.
