I have also noticed, when looking really closely, what i can only describe as looking like the analogue "noise" you see on laserdiscs (the Definitve Star Wars discs being a prime example) when watching dvds.
When you stand really close to any LCD or Plasma screen you will get the same affect. It is known as digtal static but I am not sure what actually causes it. When you are farther back this "static" will dissapear.
The only thing i can think of that might be causing it is that i have a cheap (one of those $30 Cyberhome numbers from Walmart) dvd player hooked up with cheap video cables (the yellow, red & white ones).

I have the same DVD player hooked up to my Sony 32" LCD TV and it was hooked up through regular RCA cables (the yellow, red & white ones), but I decided to upgrade. So I hooked it up with Componet cables and now it looks unimaginalbly better. Get you some componet cables, and you will see a differnce.
Also if you hook it up with componet cables, make sure you switch it to "P Scan" (Progressive Scan) mode in the setup menu.
