death of star wars

Since Lucas's ego has destroyed all hope for a good release of the OOT, in life and death, and the illegetimization of all bootlegs after 9/12, Star wars will be forced to die. So, how are we going to cope with the loss of a historical trilogy for good because of its destruction by its creator and the unbelivably bad quality that will be seen for a DVD for the OOT, certainly worse than LD and VHS, but what the hell are we going to do?

Put all are money together and buy the rights to the films when George Lucas dies.

I'm sure it will be re-released eventually. The world won't let the most important film ever made to just fade away.

I don't know of ANY movie producer that is as selfish as George Lucas. I'd say there is a 99.9 percent chance that who ever inherits the copyright and all of Lucas's Ill-gotten gains when they are eventually taken away from him (buy your champange now) Will have more respect and see the stupidity in any kibosh Lucas might have the gall to put in his will and re-justify those gains.

Lucas is softening slightly. The fact that the OOT is getting released at all is, at the very least, a sign. And with th digs at him Hammil and Kurtz have taken in the press lately, the situation appears to be coming to a head. Let's not give up hope quite yet. And careful. Lucas could very easily put into his will that the OOT can never be restored or released again. Let's hope that we can get it while he is alive.

For those in the know...how much would a restoration of the film cost, roughly? We know that there are prints in collectors' hands. How much of a grassroots movement from the fanbase would it take to generate money through donations and such in order to have a good print restored and trasnferred to dvd, and distributed not for profit? Pie in the sky...I know. But seriously, put a dollar amount on it. Could we (the fans) generate it?

Well, I seem to remember that Robert A. Harris (who very much wants to do the restoration and could be easily contacted as he often posts over at HTF) asked for something like $50,000 per film or somesuch. I really think that the fans could do it. But Lucas doesn't want these version restored, and would probably not let it happen.

A restoration depends on the quality of the source. For any of the release print copies that private collectors have i imagine it would be a bit pricey since these would be very "used" and degraded. This is moot though. Lucasfilm has many copies of the OOT, in both release print and IP form. There is no need to restore it. Lucas himself even has seperation masters from the dye-transfer technicolour prints and they are in immaculate condition. These simply could be scanned and digitally composited to create a digital copy of the OOT that looks about as pristine and high quality as the day it premiered. The cost of doing this woud probably be in the ballpark of about $100,000 or so, perhaps less, which really is absolute peanuts when you consider the importance of such an undertaking (and the millions in revenue brought in from the sales).

I know about those separation masters...the holy grail. But Lucass has those under lock and key, and probably sleeps with the key tucked safely between his buttocks each night. Ain't nobody getting their hands on those masters. If it could be done, it would have to be done with a good quality collector print. I'd donate a few hundred to such an effort. That's at least how much I'v spent buying and re-buying the movies. However this would be the first time I'd actually get what I was hoping for.

Even if George Lucas did state in his will that the OOT could never be reproduced or re-released, whoever has power of attorney can contest the will with probable cause.

I already made such a crazy proposal: Making our own 35mm preservation. Basically it boild down to the fact that getting the resources and money to do such a thing would be so mamoth that even if you could scan a 35mm private print it would be in such degraded quality that it wouldn't be worth it. Perhaps in thirty years when we are really desperate it will be.

Perhaps Lucasfilm will do it for us at some point before hell freezes over.

I got this from the Digital Bits and it pisses me off that the OOT isn't getting the same treatment.

" Moving on this afternoon, here's something else that's very cool from Comic-Con. File this as Rumor Mill-worthy, but I learned while down in San Diego that not only is Paramount working to release The Ultimate Star Trek Movie Collection in high-definition on HD-DVD and (possibly) Blu-ray Disc... the studio is quietly remastering all 79 episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series for eventual high-def disc release as well. Paramount also has sparkling high-def masters of all 4 seasons of Star Trek: Enterprise to release on disc. Can't wait to see all of the above!"

Maybe it will get treated well someday. But I won't hold my breath.

Star Wars will never die. If I ever want to get into the spirit of Star Wars I'll watch my VHS tapes from the mid 80's. That's the TRUE "Original" Star Wars to me. Just pure VHS originality. Need not this crude matter (in reference to DVD, Anamorphic, better picture etc.) to remember what Star Wars originally was! So in that respect Star Wars can never die. If you have it preserved on DVD in a format which is acceptable to you, you have in your hands Star Wars that won't ever fade away. I'm not saying that I'm suddenly against the cause of getting a better version of the OOT, but I do feel that the early un-fucked with pre 1995 editions are still as true a Star Wars as you'll ever get, unless you some how happen to have copies of the reels of all 3 films from their original release.

I don't think we have much hope. He's probably gonna leave the rights to his kids, and we can all see the great additions they've helped tack onto the saga. N*Stink and JarJar. And Hayden because he was *cute*. HOW cute. Star Wars RIP.

Why is it dead now? Everyone was so willing to fight before. This DVD release is a sign of things to come. Lets not give up now. Everyone here is disheartened, but the mood is too gloomy. It's not over till the fat lady sings. We've still got plenty of fight left. We need the optimism to come back to this board.
