Those "Takes You Out Of The Moment" Moments...

Author
Time
I was thinking of some of the things that bugged me about Star Wars and the list would probably go for a long while, so instead I though, well what moments kind of take me out of the movies or just seem so fake I can't ignore them, and while I could have probably gone on and on about certain things in both the prequels and original trilogy I decided to keep it to a 4 moment minimum (taking two moments from the Prequels and two from the Original Trilogy). So what I'm going to do now is present some screen caps of some of the few things that either amuse me or just totally make me think "oh that's fake". I'm gonna keep it short so that if people want to contribute they can as well. All you need is a DVD drive and a player that allows you to Screen Cap pictures from the movies. You can follow my 4 pic minimum format or make more, although really there's no limits to responding to the thread so if you think of some later, by all means come back on and share! Well here goes.

While alot of people probably hate this battle from the first movie altogether, I find I can somewhat suspend my disbelief about the extremely CGI'ed up part of the movie, espcially since at that point I'm there to see the Jedi fight and could give a rats ass about the Gungans, however while most shots are are fine, I find this one to look almost too "toyish" if you know what I mean. I mean hell they say George was the first person to come up with the "used" universe.....however that's obviously not the case with this shot at the Prequels in general. This shot just takes me out of the moment everytime I see it.

http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/1541/cap002oa4.jpg
Palpatine has remained one of my favourite characters throughout the entire series. He was always one of the characters I wanted to know more about (even before the Prequels). However the reason I'm posting this is mainly because of the ridiculous look on his face. He goes from angry to concentrating on the fight, to this hilarious look on his face during a swordfight. Can't help but titter every time I see it.....what were you thinking George!? Come on, how could you not catch that?

http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/44/cap003wn9.jpg
Ultimately, I still like the scene with Jabba The Hutt in A New Hope. It's another scene that helps establish events later in the movies instead of being one of those changes that's supposed to help tie in the Original Trilogy to the Prequels. With that being said, the odd time I do catch this scene I'm somewhat taken out of it. I did a bad job with this capture because you can't fully see what I'm talking about, but if you watch the scene, watch Solo's shadow over Jabba The Hutt. I know it sounds silly really, but the fact that his hand's shadow over Jabba never fails to remind me that Jabba is CGI in the scene. Doesn't quite ruin the scene for me but still takes me out of the moment.

This is more of an O-OT complaint than a Special Edition complaint. It's been fixed up for the DVD release and since I don't own a bootleg of the O-OT on DVD, this screen cap from the Special Edition will do. Witihin the original film and still in the SE, this fall always made me go "what the hell just happened?" I still don't get the purpose of this scene (and no doubt some of you will try and put it in perspective for me) and the fall always looked too phony....I can't help it purists but this is one O-OT thing I think was silly. Takes me out of the moment for a second but we're good again once he does get inside the tube although still...wait.....is he just trying to get away from Vader or is he trying to end it all and when he finally gets to the bottom he has a change of heart? heh...anyways.

Well that's it! Feel free to contribute with your own screen caps, and go ahead and make your own comments and such. Make it as personalized as you can because we obviously don't always see certain things the same way.

That's not the point of the thread! I mean everyone could say that and it'd be just like any other thread here! Oh well I tried...

I agree about the Naboo battle especially Jar Jar is farting around, the other two for me is Greedo shooting first and Hayden in ROTJ both took me out of the moment....

I know what the point of your thread is, and what I say is true. I could give you details; but what's the point when I hate almost everything in the PT and every change made to the OT?

I think Luke definitely didn't care if he survived that fall in ESB

What moments take me out.

Episode 1:

Any scene with Jar jar binks. If I must choose the worst one it's probably when the retard's kicked in the nuts. (Really though the whole movie is one big moment that takes me out of it.)

Episode 2:

That lame nightclub scene where George gives his daughter and ahmed best cameos and the camera stops directly on them for a little too long. It's such a 'take you out' moment. I wonder how i'd view it if I didn't know who those people were though. It's still a shot that lasts way too long to just be a normal shot.

The scene with dooku talking to a bunch of cgi cartoons.

Anakin and Padme in the field. It's just completely ridiculous and badly acted, written, everything.

Episode 3:

"Here's where the fun begins." Ahhh subtlety!!! NOT. Way to ripoff han solo, Vader. (I suspect Lucas wishes to spite us by making our kids think anakin said it first.)

Chewbacca carrying fucking Yoda. This took me completely out of the movie as a serious new star wars story and into the world of parody. Just a terrible Ot-killing idea.

Padme dying of a broken heart.

The whole thing. The whole pt. It's just a stupid mess.

Episode 4:

Watching it today, it's still a damn classic. Nothing takes me out, not even shoddy fx work.

Episode 5:

Another Classic. If something took me out, I don't remember it.

Episode 6:

Ewoks and that little bastard, salacious crumb, a sign of things to come.

He big in nothing important in good elephant.

I've gotta say, I don't honestly think I come out of the moment with the originals (except if the baby cries and I have to pause it ). Salacious Crumb is a bit corny, but I'm not sure he takes me out of the moment. How did we ever know his name BTW?

In the PT, midichlorians were enough to shoot the whole shebang down the dunny. Demystification and over-explanation ruin any story AFAIC. I just love the way that, in the OOT, there are so many things which just happen. No explanation needed. We are watching a documentary on something "A long time ago in a galaxy far far away" so why the hell should we expect to know the whole story and everything about every detail that goes into it? It just makes the whole story look flat and contrived.

How did we know Wicket's name either? I think the toys came out before the movie did. LOL!

I have to agree with SES about the PTs (for all 3 -the entire movie takes me out of the moment- there's nothing there to salvage)- and the SEs (every altered shot takes me out of the moment), but I will say that even though I don't like the Jabba scene in ANH (it's totally unnecessary and ruins the pacing of the film), I could have lived with it if it were the ONLY change to SW. Aside from the CGI Jabba looking horrible and totally fake, there is another "take you out of the moment" moment in that scene that comes when the newly-added Boba Fett stops and looks at the camera like "Here I am! See me? Hey all you crazed Boba Fett fans- isn't this cool?! I'm in Star Wars!" It really draws attention to itself and it's stupid - but then, so are all the other SE alterations, except the Luke/Biggs scene which I actually love.

Both/either. He was trying to get away from Darth Vader. He wasn't necessarily trying to commit suicide -but he had nowhere else to go. He took his chances- he would either die from the fall, or survive, but either way, he was free from Vader.

Hayden in ROTJ, I can't watch this scene, ever!!!!!!!!!! It is so insulting to have a PT character infiltrate the OT movies now. And this change is where I finally broke ranks with Lucas and came to the O-OT side. I didn't mind the '97 SE, although I always preferred the O-OT in the same vein, but once he inserted Creepy Hayden, I said goodbye to the SE.

For me, this scene was when Luke truly becomes a Jedi. Rather than join Vader, he chooses apparent death. He's faced his greatest fears in Vader, lost the battle, but won the war because he stayed true to his path. It's awesome...without the SE scream, of course.

Yes, he had a choice to make: give in to temptation, or sacrifice himself. He chose the latter (fortunately for all of us, he survived the fall).

First, that scene where Darth Vader reveals that he is Luke's father is meant to be a horrifying sequence. Our hero being the son of someone so evil is not supposed to be a pleasant thought. This is especially true for Luke who has invested so much anger and revenge towards Vader. Luke jumps to escape it all when he peacefully decides that death is better than falling into Vader's hands.

Otherwise, that fall isn't phony looking to me. It looks great. The tube is supposed to be sucking him in like a vacuum cleaner and so the fall isn't supposed to be completely natural.

TPM: Almost any scene with Jar Jar. I tried to love him, I really did, if only for my daughter’s benefit (She was 3 when TPM came out) I tried. I think the super-duper, quadruple back-flip sow-cow dive Jar Jar made was one of the worst moments. The E.T.s in the Senate. You know the ones that confirm that Earth exists in the GFFA.

AOTC: Anakin’s fall on Coruscant. He would need to use the force not only to slow his fall, but also to accelerate to about 195MPH in order to grab the sky-car without tearing his arms off.

ROTS: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. The Buzz-Droids are bad as well. As my son said, “Hey dad if they can get droids there can’t they get explosives there easier and cheaper?” I just sighed and said, “Yes son.”

ANHSE: Greedo and the Jabba scene that followed and essentially covered the same crap that was covered by Greedo. Those two scenes destroy three characters for me; Han because he was always a hero instead of developing into one. Greedo because he’s now the absolute worst bounty hunter ever. Jabba because I doubt Capone would let Ness live if he stepped on his shoes. Jabba should’ve dropped Han the moment he stepped on his tail. The way things sit now Jabba isn’t ruthless, he turns the other cheek or tail as the case may be.

ESBSE (First SE): Luke’s scream.

ROTJ & ROTJSE (First and Second SE): The Ewoks. It’s bad enough that the Rebels can kill a Storm Trooper with a shot to the forearm, but now Ewoks can do it with a rock to the forearm. Chewie’s Tarzan yell. “Jedi Rocks”, nobody remembers the Jedi and Rock is a term from our universe. HC as a force ghost which proves that Luke didn’t redeem Anakin.

I’m at work so I can’t put up any screen caps. Sorry.

That is awsome! I don't have kids yet, but when I do I am not quite sure how to handle the whole PT thing. My first impulse is to keep their existence a secret and never let them see them. But sooner or later they are bound to learn the truth. Maybe it is better to just let them see them, perhaps they will see them for the cheese they are.

I've never felt horrified by that scene although to be objective, I can't honestly remember my feelings as a young child when I first saw Empire. I remember my folks put that Empire was one of my favourite films growing up. I'm assuming though that if I felt anything it was awe.

The reason I personally never felt frightened (other than age reasons) is the fact that Darth Vader himself is a compelling character. That moment tacks on another dimension to Vader and the fact that he so easily bests Luke is another thing to just be in awe of. Again it could be just because by the time I saw the scene again as an older and atleast more understand person that shock made me curious of Vader instead of repulsed.....much like when the Return came out I was like "is it true!?" I'm sure had I been able to remember how I took to the films at a younger age I might very well have felt frightened. As for the phony fall, I'm sorry all I can say is just the way they filmed it, him kind of circling it's more comical to me than making me feel "oh shit! He's falling!" I guess that was just a limitation on the way they could do it back then. I'm glad they haven't changed it, it's one less thing for people to complain about but it still does look silly, just to me anyways.

Hehe, yeah, that one gets me too. In addition to that, though, is when Anakin loses his lightsaber. Obi-Wan catches it, puts it in the passenger seat... and it just sits there without any kind of motion at all.

I kinda liked that moment for that very reason; so casual, even though it is completely absurd--i found it, dare i say, clever.

The skydiving though is horrible. I just saw that the other day and had completely forgotten about it and was instantly transported back to opening day in 2002--"WTF??! Oh give me a goodamn break that is just stupid." I accept Kenobi falling 100 feet in TPM and bouncing back up equally as high, i can even go with Obi Wan diving out the window to catch the droid but Anakin skydiving through traffic and catching the car was just too unrealistic, even for a film with aliens who levitate people in the air.

We all go off topic from time to time. There is hope for every second-generation Star Wars fan so long as their parents teach them to think critically. A child that has seen a well crafted story, such as Star Wars, is quick to notice the failings in the PT.

Indeed. It’s just another example of George doing things because they look cool instead of thinking them through. He did it in the OT as well (burning Star Destroyers anyone?), but he seemed to keep the occurrences rare in those days. Well at least until Jedi came along.

I had a hard enough time with all the dodging and weaving through traffic and yet I could buy that when it was in a sky-car because it has been done before in the GFFA. I could even buy off on it if the fall was done like the one in The Fifth Element. In that film Leelu fell several stories before crashing into the back of Corbin Dallas’ Sky-Taxi. Still she was a super being and didn’t direct her fall and then land comfortably. She crashed through the fucking roof of the car and was “out of it” for a little while. Of course the entire sky-car sequence in AOTC seems to be a rip-off of the sequence in The Fifth Element. I could forgive that, but George took it a little too far over the top for my tastes.

Far from it my friend. I know many people that have issues with that shot. My suspension of disbelief is stretched more in Jedi than in the other two OT films combined. There’s the Executor, there’s Lando and Wedge (non-Jedi I might point out) maneuvering in and out of the DS2, the aforementioned Tarzan yell and many others. I had questions about Storm Trooper armor in the first two films, but after ROTJ I think I have it figured out. It’s implosive reactive armor. I’m sure more than a few people have heard of explosive reactive armor, which explodes outward to minimize the impact of an incoming kinetic device. Well the Storm Trooper armor does the exact opposite; it explodes inward when something impacts the surface. That’s the only explanation I can concoct to explain how a rock to the ankle kills Storm Troopers.

I have to say I can accept a rock to the ankle killing a stormie much more easily than I can believe stormies killing almost all the Jedi in the space of, what, half an hour maybe?
