As a Christian, I have to put in a word. I hope I don't sound too preachy or anything, and if I do I'm sorry...
Just because many Christians aren't accepting like they should be doesn't mean Christianity as a whole is bad and should be written off as fake. If you look at the Apostles and the other early followers in the bible, you'll find very few 'upstanding' members of society. Most of them were tax collectors (seen as traitors for working for Rome and mostly dishonest), harlots, and other 'not nice' people. Jesus didn't reject them based on what they had done in their past or "the kind of person" they were, and neither should we today. As for the not understanding everything, that is where faith comes in. We can't understand everything everywere. This may be a silly example, but its what I can think of off the top of my head, but I don't have first-hand experience with getting run over by a truck, but I'm not going to walk out in the middle of the street to find out if I will actually get hurt if I get run over. I believe that my mom knew what she was talking about when she told me not to walk in the middle of the road when I was a kid. Some things we kind of have to accept in the end. We can come up with reasons, but no one can 'prove' some things. At least that is what I think, your beliefs may vary...

EDIT: Cleaned up a bit to make better sense...

Thanks for your comments Number20, and I totally agree with what you are saying about not labelling a whole religious movement because of the actions and opinions of some of it's members who have obviously missed the point. As you point out Jesus hung out with 'questionable' citizens, and surely this should be an example to all of us. Let me stress that I have absolutely no problem with any of the teachings of Christ - What I have a problem with is the man-made institutions built up around those teachings and the attitudes mentioned by Gaffer that have sadly arisen from some of the people in those institutions. I also have a problem with a lot of the old testament and poeple who blindy believe in it's every word in a literal way. However, the new Testament (i.e the teachings of Christ) are A-OK, and I think if people would just open up their minds they would see that Jesus, the Buddha, and probably a few other religious characters (who I am not familiar with and therefore can't really comment) were all talking about the same thing, just in different terms.

I also take your point about not neccessarily understanding everything but having faith anyway. That is fine, but what I was really talking about are the people who don't even think for themselves. They just get told something as a kid and that's it. My Grandmother is one of those people - she was raised catholic, taught a certain way and that is the end of that (although in her defense she works in the fashion industry and comes across many gay people and does not treat them any differently even though she does not agree with what they do, so I respect her for that - she has compassion for everyone, even 'sinners').

Don't get me wrong. I'm certainly not bashing Christianity as a whole. Like I said, I am a Christian myself. If I didn't have faith in the organization, I certainly wouldn't be attending my church. I certainly don't believe that it's really corrupt. There are problems, but that is to be expected. Yeah, I said myself that Jesus utilized people who weren't upstanding members of society. I wasn't trying to label all Christians that way. I just felt like I needed to get that off my chest. I know that a lot of non-Christians complain that a lot of Christians are intolerant bigots. And some of that is true, so I just wanted to put in my perspective that, even as a Christian, I can recognize some of our own shortcomings. Hopefully, I can recognize my personal shortcomings as well.

C3PX said: Gaffer is like that hot girl in high school that you think you have a chance with even though she is way out of your league because she is sweet and not a stuck up bitch who pretends you don’t exist… then one day you spot her making out with some skinny twerp, only on second glance you realize it is the goth girl who always sits in the back of class; at that moment it dawns on you why she is never seen hanging off the arm of any of the jocks… and you realize, damn, she really is unobtainable after all. Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

It sounds like we are mostly in agreement here now. Now that reconciled world religion, lets move on to something else... lol
One of the major goals of most world religions is to better yourself and to make the world a better place as a result. All religions have those who don't do that, be it by becoming too judgemental, dogmatic, legalistic, etc. I personally believe the bible. Someone else may believe something else. But in the end, most people seem to miss the similarities that we all share.

And now, back to the pizza stone discussions.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Right now my main goal in life is to get 10 seconds on Brain Age's Calculations x20. So far my record is 13 seconds. When I get to 10, world peace will be a reality. Don't ask me how. Mostly magic.

I can't WAIT until a have a Wii! I've never been so anxious to play a videogame since x-mas 1992 (snes).

But what if they also have God and even MORE Nukes on THEIR side?

Well, first of all, God is on everyone's side - except maybe emos. Second, having a nuke pointed to some target is like having it pointed to yourself, because we all know what will happen if one country launches it. Total global destruction. So why can't we just put our weapons down and sing and dance and love? Oh yeah. Money. Lets start the Pizza Stone Jihad again!!

On a loosely related note, I watched a show on Discovery yesterday about a visionary called Herman Sörgel who had an idea in the 1920s to build a hydroelectric dam to be built across the Strait of Gibraltar, which would lower the Mediterranean Sea thus creating more land and causing Europe and Africa to be united as a single new continent called 'Atlantropa'. He believed this new prosperous continent powered by the dam would eventually usher in world peace. Very interesting.

This, combined with Esperanto being the universal language is creator desired it to be, and Hitler never being born, would make our world an insane Felliniesque retrograde yet peaceful utopia. We would be like a peaceful version of the film Metropolis.
