I don't think it's wrong to be faithful to the letter of the book, I think Columbus's problem was that he simply didn't have the skill to pull it off. In the hands of a more competent director, a faithful to the letter approach may have looked better.

I mean Columbus did do good to start off the movies but I'm glad he is not in it anymore. I don't think he is good at adapting things. I mean he did a good job with RENT but it could have been so much better. Well anyways back on topic to HP
