Any direction to make the PT surpass the Godfather would not save the SW franchise

What?

“What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one.”

That makes no sense. If Kershner had directed TPM we would have probably had another ESB.

I thought Kershner turned down Jedi, and later regretted it?

I thought that he couldn't do ROTJ because of the whole director's guild thing. That seems to be when the films as a whole really started to go haywire.

Well, Lucas did ask other directors to direct the PT, but they all turned him down.

Where did you read this? Who was asked? Are any of these things about who was going to direct or write confirmed true.

There have been rumors of other directors being offered the PT. I've heard Spielberg, Darabont, and other names mentioned before, but there's only one name that I know of that's actually stated that he was approached to do it. In his introduction to the book "The Cinema of George Lucas," Ron Howard revealed that Lucas approached him, but Howard wanted Lucas to get back to directing, so he declined and encouraged Lucas to direct it instead. Lucas has said that he originally intended to only direct Episode I and hire other directors to do the other two.

What happened then? Were there ego issues?

what 'real' director would have wanted to subject themselves to being a puppet for George ?

you could hardly blame anyone for running away screaming from that job

Of course, another director, totally trusted and permitted to call his own game, would have helped in a lot of ways. Then again, that director (insert name here) possibly would have gotten some things wrong Lucas actually managed to get right.

There are larger problem with the PT - bad dialogue, an unclear and poorly researched story, overdoses of effects, pandering to certain demographics. How can the most skilled director possibly rescue a patient so horribly ill?

No, in a very literal sense, George Lucas was the best choice to direct the PT such as it is.

I assume that you are referencing his control over and co-direction with Richard Marquand on Return of the Jedi.

Many are saying why i stated what I said about the PT not being any good. I have come to the realization that the idea of the PT was doomed from the start.
