Fox France confirms the French OOT release >NOT< to be anamorphic — Page 4

I knew Lucas would not have allowed the OT to be seen in the most up-to-date format. He's never that willing to change his mind. Maybe by the time the HD formats come out he'll reconsider the option of a quality release and thus believe it was his idea all along.

I don't care what soundtrack they use as long as the lines "Close the blast doors!" and "You're lucky you don't taste very good." are in the movie.

My laserdisc is missing the former line. It makes me sad.

Isn't the former line a special edition addition? It makes the scene rather funny, but it's not really needed. The latter, "taste" line is in the original as I remember and thus should be on your Laserdisc.

I thought "Close the blast doors!" was in the original, original, original version of Star Wars, then it somehow got omitted in all the home video versions that followed. All of us who watched it on VHS for years got accustomed to this version. So when we saw the SE, we thought we were hearing it for the first time when, in actuality, the SE restored this original line back into the soundtrack.

How interesting. If that's how it went then I wonder why they bothered omitting that in the home release? Its not a bad line.

Guys, that line is (famously) in the mono mix (along with Threepio's tractor beam lines et al).

I'm not all that surprised either. So, it's back to waiting and hoping.

I can't say this news is too surprising. I am still debating on if I am going to buy them or not, as I don't know how big of a deal this whole anamorphic thing is to me yet. Yes, I too wish for much better treatment for our beloved OOT. But at the same time I see we aren't dealing with a rational man here, so I'm not holding my breath. It has been a decade+ since the DVD format took off and became commonplace, and Lucas has yet to release them. Now here we are in 2006 with the biggest fan outcry ever IMO and he is STILL fighting tooth and nail...

I think I am going to wait and see what the reviews say after the 12th. If the DVDs turn out to be halfway decent, I may buy them and leave them sealed for a few reasons:

1. I still have my widscreen VHS copies to watch when the mood strikes me. Also, I found some people who can transfer them to DVD for me since I don't have the time or technology to do so, killing two birds with one stone (preserving my VHS copies and having them on DVD).
2. If Lucas does decide to make these DVDs the finale for the OOT sadly, they will be worth some money in years to come (but I don't think I will leave them sealed, though, and will be keeping them for myself). Non-anamorphic DVDs are still DVDs.
3. If Lucas finally sees the light and releases future, better versions of the OOT, I will fetch more for sealed copies vs. opened ones. Yes, it will still be a loss to me cost-wise possibly, but I will definitely be able to offset some of that for sure by leaving them sealed.

*FYI reading reviews saved my a** in the past. I bought the '04 versions the day they came out but I just KNEW something fishy was up with them and I made it a point to read some reviews before I opened them. Once I learned about all of the insane changes (yet again *sigh*) I returned them to the store for a full refund the next day. The really sad part in all of this is I was expecting the '97 versions and was okay with that...well let's put it this way: okay enough with it that I still would've bought them, but I always wanted the OOT on DVD...

EDIT: And I could always rent the Sept. ones too, watch them, and make up my mind for myself.

Does Lucas even know what we'll be getting in September?

Sure, he knows they'll be coming, but he doesn't really strike me as a very hands on kind of guy in this type of thing. Could it be possible that someone in the home video division of Lucasfilm convinced him to release the OOT on DVD and said they could simply use the LD masters, with little additional cost. Lucas could've simply approved and washed his hand of the matter without seeing the transfer, etc. When told of the anamorphic situation, maybe he just shrugged (as opposed to laughing maniacally while throwing the last prints of the OOT into the fireplace).

Pehaps. But Lucas appears to be the nerve center of all things Star Wars. "These versions do not represent George's original vision. This whole situation is so ridiculous.

100% not true, huh? It's stated almost proudly. I was almost hoping that maybe the misinformation would at least embarrass them enough into doing the right thing. But, no, they just keep on chugging along on the Good Ship Piece O' Crap, not bothering to inquire what in the world that terrible smell is.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

And that, Gaffer Tape, is 100% TRUE!

"It is 100 percent, completely not true" was her response.

Did you make your feelings known to her about the non-anamorphic issue? If so, what did she say?

She proably said what the "official LFL response" said. Again, we must remember, that Lucas is still contemptuous of these versions. He wants to test the waters, and as we all know, he'll be surprised by the results. "Now we'll find out whether people wanted the original or the improved versions. It will all come out in the end." What is the end? The 30th anniversary? Everybody cross their fingers.

Heh, I envision a complicated, evil-mastermind setup with a timer ticking down to the 30th anniversary: one side of the contraption holds the theatrical releases while the other side holds the special editions and a great sword threatens to fall from above. As fans support one version more than the other, one is more in danger of being cut to pieces.

A few months pass...
Nineteen years have passed, and we're still waiting for EMI to do justice to The Beatles' catalog.
Those commercial CDs are crappy rips.
That's why guys like Dr. Ebbetts are playing the "X0" role with ultra-high-end turntables and pristine vinyl and getting better results than the official CDs.

Yeah right after I posted that I thought, "That was probably a bad example." LOL

Not to derail the thread, but ... what exactly is wrong with the current discs' mastering? Pardon my ignorance, but I hear this a lot and it puzzles me - mind you that I've only ever heard the CD mixes and/or what's on the radio.

I've wondered that myself. I'm not an "audiophile" by any stretch, but I'm also far from being tin-eared, and I have always been very pleased with the sound of the Beatles' CDs (?)

But then, I was also happy with Rykodisc's David Bowie releases, which (apparently) weren't good enough either (at least that's what I heard after Virgin got the rights to his catalog).

Not a sword-a lightsaber! And Yoda would be standing and watching and say "Prefer the original, the public does. Remaster them, we must." I think that it a case of a couple of things. I don't want to Lucas bash, so I must choose my words carefully, but some of it might have to do with his ego (i.e. his preference for the SEs vs. much of the public's preference for the originals). And, of course, money. As I've said in another thread, it would be a devious marketing trick to test the waters with this release and then include a high-quality release in the 30th anniversay boxed set (anamorphic with 5.1/2.0/and mono) when the set will of course be very high priced. Lucas knows full well that someone like me would pay a lot of money for the set just to get the three version of the films which I love so much. Let us hope that we are correct.

I love The Road Warrior too - can you imagine how crappy it would be done with CGI?

Unfortunately, yes I can. Did you see Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay's Bad Boys II? There is an action set piece in which the villians are dropping cars from a carrier onto the good guys who are chasing them. What could, in the hands of Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, John Woo, Peter Jackson, Brian Singer, Sam Raimi, or even someone like Richard Donner or John McTiernan or one of the other virutosos of popcorn filmmaking be an exhilarating sequence instead becomes a mishmash of CG and editing so frenetic that it's almost impossible to tell what's going on.

In addition to the examples listed on that site, I've also noticed that Luke's "hang on back there" line to Artoo is different on the "story of star wars" LP (35mm mono mix) than on the stereo mix.
