That's odd, I had poked holes through for BT, wonder what's going on over there.

But then again, I've been having problem with Azureus lately. In fact it crashed this morning and took a piece of Edit Droid's ANH with it. Azureus was able to check 99% of it but the crash fubared something so if someone could seed for just a second on that, it'd be much appreciated.

Have you tried µTorrent trip42? It's a bit more streamlined, and minus the Java problems that Azureus can cause.

No, haven't tried µTorrent yet. I've heard lots of good things about it. Just haven't had any motive to make the switch. Maybe this is all I needed.

I never got it so I cannot seed, but here's a piece of friendly advice:
trip42 is seeding it. You can't see each other because you're both behind firewalls.
I think it's the seeder's prerogative to use a firewall if he chooses, and the leechers (if they want it badly enough) should configure their own firewalls properly to allow the seeders to connect to them.

When the pizza delivery guy knocks, do you open the door for him ?
Or do you refuse and sit inside starving, safe behind your firewall ?

I didn't realize that. Thanks for pointing it out.

How can I configure my firewall properly? I am new to torrenting (and high-speed internet in general) so I am not surprised that I did not have this figured out.

When I first started torrenting, I read some information of configuring the firewall properly, but I was never able to understand it/figure it out - I started torrenting and it worked so I just ran with it.

If someone could pm me or email me with detailed, newbie instructions on how to do this, I would really appreciate it. I am running Windows XP, using BitTorrent and I have SBC DSL, with a 2wire modem/firewall unit.

Despite all this, my share ratio has been at least 1:1 whenever possible (like, until my hard drive fills).

Thanks for putting up with me!

What BT program are you using? Does your firewall allow any sort of port fowarding? Sorry, not familiar with 2wire.

I am using the program BitTorrent itself.

See, I don't know if it allows port forwarding because I haven't been able to get it to work. I vaguely remember trying to set something up so that it opened the ports in the 1200 or 12000 range (don't remember which), but when I noticed no difference in my dl/ul speeds, I closed them again. I don't honestly know how to coordinate between my windows firewall settings and my torrent program settings. No tutorials have been able to help me, either. On top of everything else, I am running McAfee AV too, if that makes a difference.

There are links in the MySpleen FAQ here and here that should help out.

ETA: The vanilla Bittorrent client may not be the best. The clients mentioned above (Azureus and µTorrent) seem to be well regarded.

Bram Cohen's official BitTorrent client uses a port range 6881-6899 (or is it 6881-6999 ?) by default, but there are options to change it to something less well-known.
I haven't used the GUI version (if one exists) but the command-line options are, for example
--minport 49152 --maxport 65535

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

See, I actually read those FAQ's but I still didn't get it.

Sorry - this stuff just isn't my area of expertise.

I will try a different client though to see if it works out better (i.e. makes more sense).

Otherwise, if anyone could give step-by-step instructions on how to do my config, I would still be really appreciative.

Do I only need to change the range in my torrenting program, or do I also need to config my firewall, too?

You won't notice any instananeous speed boost. Opening up your firewall (ie port fowarding) allows people to connect to you. When you are behind a firewall, you can only make connections to other peers and nobody to can connect to you without you connecting to them first. With more people connecting to you, that means you have more peers to grab data from. Which in the end, means you'll get stuff faster.

You need to tell the firewall which range the BT client is using.

I found www.portforward.com to be a tremendous help when setting up my broadband connection - it's a huge database of configurations for using different routers with different clients/apps. Should be something there to help.

Still stuck on 66.6% of Special Edition Hype myself, though - if there's anyone else out there who can seed I'd be pathetically grateful!

Hey Everyone

I finally figured out how to configure my firewall. Darth Mallwalker, you were able to tell earlier that I was behind a firewall. I don't know how you checked, but could you check again to see if I have everything configured correctly? Thanks!

You're open for business !

To see for yourself, on that torrent's details page click Peers [See full list]
If you see <thumbsdown.gif> then firewall is closed; if you see a port number, it's open.

trip42 is currently closed so you can't connect to him (seeder's prerogative), but if you wait patiently his client should connect to you eventually.

Thanks so much to you and everyone else for their help. I can't believe that I had gotten 70 GB down without doing this already. Port forwarding rules!

Yeah, I haven't had a chance to take a look at this yet. Maybe tonight. Router just might need a swift boot to the head. Hopefully I'll get a chance to fix it soon.

Two things that threw me off that you may also have wrong -

- I had to restart my torrent program for it (and MySpleen) to read the port as open.
- I had to make sure that my actual computer on the network was selected for the open port profile (torrent1). My firewall had defaulted to its own name (I think - CHX-142 or CVX or something - almost like a droid name) rather than the computer name for the open port profile, so the computer port was still closed.
- PS - my standard "vanilla" BitTorrent works fine.

I am now indefinetly seeding "Return of the Ewok", "Building Empire", "Deleted Magic", and "The Story of Star Wars". And while the following aren't Star Wars torrents I figured I ought to make mention of them, I am indefinetly seeding "Wizard People, Dear Readers" and I will continue seeding "ADM's Harry Potter 4 - Extended Edition" untill I reach a ratio of 3, dual-layer dvds are hard for me to seed, because I recompress them to fit on a single layer, I don't like to waste hard drive space with the dual-layer files that I don't need. BTW I downloaded a plugin for Azureus to make things download faster which is semi-screwy and tends to not allow me to connect to people with certain bittorrent clients other than Azureus and a few others, but it works so sorry to all you who can't connect!

Edit: The "Wizard People, Dear Readers" is the original DVD release, not the newer one, thank you!

Strange, I haven't been able to get my port fowarding to work since making the switch from Azureus to uTorrent. I realize this isn't really the apropriate forum for this, but I'll throw it out there anyway. Port forwarding used to work fine for me with Azureus. Azureus crashed (again) the other day taking a couple pieces of some torrents I had downloaded with it. So I decided to scrap it and install uTorrent. I setup uTorrent to use the same port I had Azureus running on. But spleen still apparently can't see that port (as it doesn't list my port in the peers list). Tried rebooting the switch, tried rebooting the computer, nadda. Once again, sorry for the slightly OT post. But if anyone has any ideas, love to hear em.

Worth setting it up from scratch with a different port? Or do you have other apps that rely on you keeping the one you have?

Tried a new port and got the same results. Don't know why uTorrent is having problems.

What kind of router is it? Are the network options in uTorrent the same as those that Azureus used to give you? (afraid I can't advise from experience as I use Bitlord!)

The ever popular Linksys WRT54G with stock firmware. Haven't used any of the open source firmwares yet out of fear of bricking the thing.

They're fairly similar. Azureus certainly has many more extensive settings but both are pretty straight foward. Only complaint I have so far is Azureus allows you to specify a port to use for DHT while it doesn't appear that uTorrent does. Well, that complaint, and the fact that I can't get port fowarding to work. But who's counting.

Hmm, it doesn't sound as if it's anything you're doing wrong, but you could have a look at the step-by-step here just in case you missed something...
