I just wanna ask how long are we gonna hold on to our VHS version of Star Wars ? I mean the main reasion we have them is becouse the OOT is not on Dvd . As we all know VHS is a dead format and Dvd + HD - Dvd is the way forward . Will we have a VHS copy in five years time ??
There won't be any more release of the OOT in VHS, dude. The DVDs of the OOT are coming out in September, so buy those and then either can your VHSs or keep them for posterity, but VHS is history.
Just to provide the other side of the argument, you could keep your VHS copies (or Laserdiscs or whatever) and NOT buy the unsatisfactory September discs. You could wait it out and keep up the campaign for a proper DVD release.
As we've seen, there are clearly two camps forming on this issue, but I hope both will continue to fight, even after the September discs are out, for a proper DVD release of the OOT. I recommend those that buy the discs in September lend their support to the SE disc return.
Also, if you were meaning your question in the sense of "is there any point to keeping VHS copies after buying the September discs?" then I would have to say that they are not likely to appreciate much in value, so it would be purely for your own nostalgia!
My main interest in collecting is getting the movie on every home video format it was released on, so the old VHS version fills a niche long after the format itself dies. I've seen people pay a bit more for the old 20th Cent. Fox "Video Rental Library" cassette from 1982.
I sold my Pan&Scan VHS sets a few years ago, but I'm keeping my 2 VHS widescreen sets, and my laserdiscs, even though I'm planning on buying the DVDs in September.
The '97 SE is only available on VHS or laserdisc. Not that anyone cares as much as the O-OT. But there isn't any reason to throw the old VHS tapes away.
