The important thing to look for with any DVD Recorder bought with a view to recording bought VHS tapes is the Macrovision that the tapes are protected by.

Straight from the box, my LiteOn would not allow copying of any bought tape or any premium SKY TV channel - movies/sports etc. I found and installed a Macrovision disabling hack and now it works fine.
