It's dead on target, and going fast. The nearest defender is too far away to get a foot to it. It's 100% going to be a goal. But then the defender decides if he can't get his feet to it he's gonna try a different tactic and he dives across the goalmouth, saving the ball with his hands. The ball doesn't go in. What would happen? Would the ref give the goal? Or would he give a penalty for a handball in the box? Considering a penalty has a chance of being saved, it doesn't seem fair, but what are the rules on this? And has it ever happened?
Penalty, and the defender gets sent off for a deliberate hand ball to deny an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.
