Did GL make that comment? Where?
I don't actually remember where but I defineitley remember when the news broke about the DVD release he said something along those lines. Does anybody else remember the exact quote?

I don't remember the exact quote, but it was something about "It'll all come out in the end. Now we'll see what the fans really want." I've revised the letter to hold this line.

.......................................FORM LETTER............................................

Dear Mr. Lucas,

With regards to your comments that sales of this set will show what versions the fans really want, I am returning this 2004 edition disc that I recieved in the recent release to help you with your calculations. I only wanted the original theatrical version.

I would have preferred that the Original Version DVDs be in a 16:9 anamorphic format, but since this is all that's currently available, I guess will have to settle for non-anamorphic for the time being. I do, however, hope that we can see a remastered, anamorphic version of the film(s) in the near-future, preferebly on a hi-def format.

But I would much rather watch the Original Version DVDs in a non-anamorphic format than watch the Special Editions in an anamorphic format- so I give my DVDs to you. You may do with them what you like.

Sincerely,
(your name here)

What I'm going to do is "rotate" my discs, that is throw out my old worn 2004 discs and replace them with the new ones from the upcoming set. Then I'm going to download anamorphic-enhanced PAL fan edits of the new OOT release and place them in the new cases alongside the 4x3's.

My 2004 DVDs are mint anyway. I watched them once and once only.

Same here. What I'm going to do is send the 2004 discs back, and put the new DVD releases in the 2004 collector's box with the bonus DVD.

I like the idea of sending the discs back, though I'm also thinking of selling my 2004 discs on Ebay since I foolishly paid $50 for them last year, and I don't have unlimited funds to keep buying dvd's all the time. I can't quite make up my mind what to do about it all.

But I'm pretty sure I will be buying the release in September, since (presumably, hopefully) it will be double layer and I don't have a double layer burner to use on any fan-created versions. I'll likely get them from fye.com since they have the $7 rebate on each one.

See! He IS going to use the sales of these DVDs to gage the demand for the OT. He's probably just using them as a "test" to see how many of us want them (which is why they're getting the cheap-o treatment now) and THEN, if the sales are good, he MAY decide to invest some money into them for a future Blu-Ray or HD-DVD release.

He's a bastard- but we've GOT to buy these discs. I think the future of the OT depends on it.

Oh, that logic pisses me off so much. Not you, just this rationale. We have to buy the crappy ones now in order to get the opportunity to buy the better ones later. Doesn't that sound just a little bit wrong to you?

Yes, it's very wrong- but that's the way Lucas treats his fans.

He makes us jump through hoops for no good reason.

Yes, but remember this as well-

These new DVDs are going to be limited edition, only available through 12/31. If you change your mind later and decide you want them- you're going to pay a lot more for them on the secondary market (like, eBay, etc.) It will make $19.99 or less a piece seem like a bargain.

Perhaps individual letters make the most sense. Certainly easier and cheaper. I like THX's guidelines for the accompanying message as well. I'm definitley going to be doing this.

I'm giving my copy to my little brother. Cause he likes star wars and I won't need to have these since I'll have the Original and SE in one case.

George-Now we'll find out whether they really wanted the original or whether they wanted the improved versions.

Thanks very much for that link.

He also says:
"It's just the original versions, as they were," Lucas said. "We didn't do anything to it at all. But we're not sure how many people want that."

He really has no clue.

I was thinking that perhaps, now that all six episodes have come out and the saga is over, the OOT is the only thing left that has not been released. And since LFL often release multiple releases of the Star Wars films, perhaps this is just testing the waters. However, as mentioned, it's a catch 22, since this release could dictate future releases, especially with the 30th anniversary coming up. It's a vain hope, I know, and it seems like a foolishly optimistic, but who knows? That thought can help me sleep at night, anyway .

I'm feeling optimistic too, I was feeling disappointed that the DVDs aren't anamorphic, but now I'm thinking this is a good sign. Maybe the DVDs are limited edition because there's going to be something special for the SW 30th anniversary in 2007 (if the response to these DVDs is good, that is).

We don't have to wonder if he's testing the waters with these DVDs anymore- because he's basically admitted it already.

Obviously this release shows that Lucas has changed his mind about never releasing the OOT on DVD at all. The question is whether this it, or whether future release, as well as a restoration, an anamorphic transfer, and 2.0 and 5.1 and mono sound are in the future of OOT DVD releases. I don't know whether the OOT will be on the 30th anniversary set, and I also don't know whether they will ever see the light of day on Blu-Ray, HD, or future formats. Still, to be optimistic, if the 2007 set is going to be "archival," then perhaps it will be on there. Maybe, just maybe, if this release sells well, Lucas will see that there is a market for it and continue with releases of it. It seems that this is a waiting game again. Right now, all that we can do is wait and hope. Thanks for making me feel welcome on the forums, by the way.

Ah, I see. Good point. I just hope that he meant what we think that he meant. I guess what I mean is, even if he is testing the waters, I wonder whether or not this will dictate future releases (and if it will, then hopefully we can see theatrical version of THX 1138 at some point).

'Until then, he says he's curious to see what the reception will be for the upcoming limited-edition DVD release of the three original "Star Wars" films (see "Three Original 'Star Wars' Films (Finally) Coming To DVD — But Not For Long"). "It's just the original versions, as they were," Lucas said. "We didn't do anything to it at all. But we're not sure how many people want that."

You might say quite a few, considering how many fans were angered by the digitized, expanded updates of episodes IV, V and VI. Lucas claims he's not re-releasing the originals to appease fans, but rather to bate them. "Now we'll find out whether they really wanted the original or whether they wanted the improved versions," he said. "It'll all come out in the end."'

See, now, here's the catch 22. Since a lot of people won't buy non-anamorphic releases, it may affect sales. The question is, how good will sales of these releases be and what kind of message will that send? I suppose that we'll find out in a few months. Lets keep our fingers crossed...apparently for the next year at least.

It probably won't say on the package "non-anamorphic" just "widescreen-letterbox" or just "widescreen". Those who don't visit these boards probably won't even know until they get home and try to watch it on their widescreen TV.

How many people are planning on sending the SE discs to Lucasfilm? For those who don't want to do that, you can also donate your discs to the members of the military in Iraq. You can go to: www.operationdvd.us to find out how to donate DVDs.

However, I still like the idea of sending the discs back to GL better. I personally wouldn't send the SE discs to the military- haven't they suffered enough already? LOL
