New Line Home Entertainment is revisiting Middle Earth with new DVD releases of Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King will each be presented in two-disc “Limited Edition” sets with an exclusive behind-the scenes documentary. The DVDs street Aug. 29 (prebook July 25) at $28.98 each.

For each film, disc one presents both the theatrical version of the film and its extended edition through seamless branching, while disc two features an intimate, never-before-seen documentary created by Costa Botes. The feature-length documentaries, with more than 300 minutes of never-before-available footage, focus on a number of complexities and circumstances and affected the making of the movies.

The films won a total of 17 Academy Awards, including Return of the King’s 2003 Best Picture win.

"Among many things I have to be thankful for are you, the fans. I know that some of you haven't liked every single thing that I've done with the saga, and that you have a strong sense of ownership over all things Star Wars. But take that passion and devotion and channel it into a creative project of your own."

Jackson will keep milking the cow until bloody bones come through the udder, and then he'll adapt or remake something else. Just wait for the seven releases of King Kong. Incidentally, could Petey try showing if he can create rather than take other's work and remodel it?

Oh, come on. That's not totally fair. At least Jackson has given the fans something SUBSTANTIAL with each release of the discs, and bonus materials that leave noone wanting. Nobody has released more verisions of the same movie than Lucas has, and nobody has done less to make those releases less special than LFL. has.

I agree that repeat releases gets tiresome. But, at least in Jackson's case, he really does deliver the goods to the fans and offer something with each release that makes it of value in some way. Jackson is also the ONLY director that I've seen offer discounts on new versions of the films if you already owned the previous releases. He did that with the extended editions. Let LFL. try that one.

I am not a defender of Peter Jackson, but the difference is that New Line really owns the movies. For SW, Lucas owns everthing, and only distributes through Fox. We don't know if New Line is the one who is really behind the cash cow of LOTR, but I am sure that Jackson has something to do with it.

In the end, atleast LOTR fans can any version in great quality on DVD, O-OT fans have to watch them as bonus material.

awwwwwwwwwwww crap. a seemless branch of the movies. dont tell me that means that the whole movie will be on one disc, so you dont have to switch halfway. cause that will mean i have to sell my versions and buy those ones AGAIN.

Yeah, but won't the films be more compressed that way if branched compaired the EE ones?

When Lucas does this it's a slap in the fan's face... when Jackson does it..... it's spin time.

I really dig the cover art on those. And the bonus material seems worthwhile. And you get both versions of each movie on one disc. Wow. Not like these will replace my previous EE sets, but I'm totally getting these.

The MPEG-2 video data for FOTR:EE is about 9.3 GB. A Dolby 5.1 soundtrack would probably be around 500 MB. Take that how you will.

Come to think of it, it would probably fit nicely on a dual-layer DVD so long as the transfer was not anamorphic.

I think this is actually a pretty good release. And considering its only the second re-release of either versions I'd say any complaint is pretty unreasonable.

Here's some more information on the documentary:
(From Wikipedia) "Costa Botes assembled documentaries about the making of the Lord of the Rings films, as a result of reputedly being a close friend of Jackson. Botes' films, with no narration, no interviews, and no commentary, include behind-the-scenes footage collected over a five year span."

What's interesting is that because New Line Cinema did not authorize his project, Botes could not release the documentaries to the public. So I guess New Line must have authorized it for this release.

if GL was about to release Star Wars for the 3rd time, people would be pissed, IMO.

Why is there such a calm rational to another LOTR release, while the SW DVD's... with a whopping one set currently available, makes people online furious?

The bottom line is that this upcoming set now makes 3 versions of LOTR DVD's available to the "fans". That's 3 different ROTK sets available since 2003-04.

If this was LFL, there would be plenty said about it. But PJ gets a pass.

1. Original cuts released on video; Jackson tells fans a more extensive cut will be released at the end of the year
1.. Extended Cuts released

2. Both are bundled together with branching

Yes, he really is callous.

Probably because this is a STAR WARS website.

And probably because Jackson hasn't repalced Frodo with a walking talking CGI banana in this release.

War does not make one great.

I thought this may be appropriate:

Changes in George Lucas's Lord of the Rings: Special Edition

11. Hobbits' resistance to the ring is caused by the high number of Midichlorians they posess.

10. One hyphenated word: Jar-Jaromir!

9. Gandalf to set off fifteen minute fireworks display every time the party stops to rest.

8. "Help me Tom Bombadil, you are my only hope."

7. All Orcs actually clones of Wormtongue.

6. Extra hobbits added digitally. Like, loads of hobbits. Especially in Mordor. Kids love hobbits, right?

5. Witch King hilariously eaten by Oliphant.

4. "It's about this one guy, Gollum, and how he is redeemed through hard work."

3. Elves have these really cool houses in the trees.

2. All poetry of original restored, complete with musical backing and endless CG dancers.

1. At the battle of Helm's Deep, the Uruk-hai shoot first.
Don't forget: with Lacuna, you can forget.

I don't know where to begin... but why are you discussing this here, its called "General STAR WARS Discussion". If you don't like Peter Jackson, go bash him in the Off Topic section.

And this site doesn't say it's against different versions on dvd, does it? The main goal of this site as far as I know is to get the original Star Wars trilogy on DVD in a resonable quality.

Personaly, I will probalby buy the new LOTR discs if it still looks good on single DVD's.

I love the LOTR flicks.... think PJ is a great director.... just comparing the fan reaction to another LOTR set, to fan reaction to SW DVD releases..... one results in spin... the other in fanboy outrage.

I don't really understand the original post... how is Peter Jackson becoming like George Lucas? As far as I can tell, he's just releasing each edition of the movies for a second time with a never before seen documentary. He's not making any changes or anything. Hell, if you don't want to double dip, then DON'T. Geez.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

Well, we did get theatrical cut's of LOTR and we did get extended editions of them to freely choose betwen... If we would have the same options with Star Wars I don't think anyone here would bash Lucas the way we might do today.

I don't complain about Lucas releasing them in 04 and 05 and again now in 06... keep on releasing them in different packages, I don't care. All I want is, as I've said before, a decent looking (that means anamorphic, good quality picture and nice crisp sound) release from a descent master of the trilogy.

Sure, there have been plenty of releases for LOTR, too many perhaps in the short period of time between the theatrical releases and now. But there is a major difference as to why think Jackson and Lucas are different. There is a theatrical release available, and a high-quality one. Until now, there was only the 04 SE available. Now the OOT is getting released, but as a 'special feature' and with questionable quality. In addition, PJ hasn't ran the theatrical versions of his movies down and claimed the "original vision" bit. So I say that he is ok. I don't see how he is the same as Lucas.
In addition, saying that there is only one SW trilogy released isn't quite true. There was the '04 DVDs with bonus disc, then the '05 DVDs without bonus disc, now the upcoming September release with the films packaged individually and the OOT as a bonus disc. Only the last release has something new. All the LOTR sets have had something different on them. Different films, different bonus features, etc.

Eh, I'll be sticking with my 4-Disc extended edition releases. Those had some great bonus features (five years later and I still haven't watched em' all) and the extended editions were GREAT. I consider them the only versions now, they were such a vast improvment on the theatrical cuts.
