NOT buying it certainly has many advantages. The cat is out of the bag on this one--the entire home theater world is up in arms about it. Lucasfilm has been sent a message loud and clear. Boycotting these is the natural follow-through.

If we protest and complain enough, Lucasfilm WILL release them again in a better form. They thought they could get away with this...but they cant. And if we buy these new dvds then it will only prove Lucasfilm can dick consumers around in such ridiculous ways that have never even been contemplated by other video corporations.

I'm not buying partly as a protest, but mainly just because I don't want it.

Besides, there might still be a chance that this mess can be corrected before time runs out for this release. What if people at Lucasfilm are reading these boards, gauging fans' responses? What incentive do they possibly have to put forth the extra effort if everyone is saying, "Damn, I'm pissed. Damn, I'm writing letters. Damn, I hate Lucasfilm. But, sigh, I'm still going to buy it"? I admit I'm still torn myself. I want the trilogy so badly, and I know everyone here who said they are willing to buy it want it just as badly. But we can't let them dick around with us like this. Like I asid in another post, we are the consumers. We're supposed to hold the power. They're supposed to work to get us to buy, and we, in turn, give them our money for their work enticing us. So far, I have seen no evidence of this "exhaustive vault searching" they claim to have done for this. More like "exhaustive searching on ebay for the Definitive Collection." I'm still on the fence post with four months to go, and there I will remain until Lucasfilm does its job and finds a way to woo me.

Ugh, I don't know where I stand on this either! You're ALL right! I don't want to miss my chance forever - it's not because I'll settle for less - it's because I don't have enough faith in LFL to release more.

You won't miss out forever. Buying these will not make him release them again or not. All this is is another worm on the hook to get you to bite another set of DVDs. Next year he will have a whole new worm. If you don't buy these now, I am sure you will be happy. You can always buy them cheap next year when all the fans who are buying the 2007 sets pawn off their 2006 sets.

Man, Jay is spot on here. We need to stick to our principles. I'd rather go down fighting than surrender. The noise we're making is being noticed and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see this story break in the mainstream media this week. Weakening now is NOT going to help at all! So, if you haven't already, write, fax, phone and email. Especially write, business types see one hard copy letter to be equal to 100 emails or more. I know I've never hand written a letter in the internet age until now . And why? Because I am REALLY angry.

I mean, come on, when things were looking bad for the Rebelion did they say "Ah, let's just quit and join the Empire, it'll be easier"? Of course not. Now I know that's a pretty nerdy analogy but hey, it's appropriate

Supporting this release will only prove to Lucas that he has us by the balls and that he can continue to release crap product, without any investment or effort, and get away with it. And continue to stick it to his most loyal fanbase. We may end up losing this battle but if we remain united and vocal we can win the war.

Be cool,
The Dean

I hear you, Jay. It's that attitude that I keep trying to correct, reminding people this isn't a gift it's a product for which we're being asked to fork over our hard-earned cash. If Lucas were giving this out free to everybody who bought the 2004 set, then it would be a gift that we would have less room to bitch about. But that is not the case. He's essentially selling us the same crappy movies in 2004 and charging full-price for new "bonus material" in his words. $90 for Bonus Material. The balls on this guy must be bigger than his goiter.

Difference is, yes, I'll buy it -- but not before selling my 2004 set. I'm going to buy it for one main reason: To preserve my license to possess the X0 project. Especially given that both of these discs will have come from the same master, posessing the official Unaltered Trilogy will give Lucasfilm no legal ground to stand on.

Edit: I thought this quote was applicable. I'm not sure if Gandhi actually said it, or if it was just from the movie, but it's a good one:

Just ran across this quote at TF.n:

Anything that widens the gap between the 1977 Star Wars and the [insert year here] Episode IV- A New Hope is fine by me. I'll no doubt end up buying the second one in HD, 3D and HD-3D-TV anyway.

I wonder if I can get a subscription...

I heard that if you order direct from starwars.com, they include a bonus disc that has a home video Lucas shot of himself taking a big steaming dump on the original negatives and then wiping his ass with several $1000 bills.

Cool! I'm definitely buying now. In fact. I'll buy 2, and also write him a thank you letter (he is doing me a favour, after all) - that way, when Lucas sees the sales figures and reads my letter, he's sure to release the OOT in anamorphic for the 30th anniversary. What a great plan! I love giving my money to Lucas.

Wow, sometimes you really have to stop and think about all this. This whole board, our DVD collections and the beginning of DVD. When I stop and think about all that it makes me laugh. Can you believe the humor of this situation? It is really quite funny actually. Lord of the Rings, go to the store buy a copy, your done. Back to the Future, go to the store buy a copy, your done. Star Trek, same way. Star Wars, go to the store, see three different DVD versions, all the same, none that you really want. If only SW was as easy to get on DVD as Back to the Future. I would be happy with a three disc set in one case, no bonus disc. Just give me the real thing in good quality. Instead even the 04 discs are poorly done. It really makes me laugh. How some of the most popular movies of all time are so hard to get on DVD, even now with our standard for a Star Wars DVD being as low as they are, they still manage to aim below our standard.

Three stupid discs and I am happy. Instead we are all wasting a ton of our time on these boards talking about what might have, or should have been.

That whole idea in Star Trek, about every body working for the betterment of mankind, it'll never happen. $$$$ is to important.

Ahh, those BTTF discs are so perfect. If only Lucasfilm could take a note out of Universal/Zemeckis/Gale's notebook.

Now Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis are quality filmakers who truley do respect their fim trilogy's release on DVD. (I'm talking, of course, about Back to the Future.)

They made absolutley sure that NO alterations were made, and that the flims were exactly as seen in theatres in 1985, '89, and '90. (With one exception in Part II: the Part III trailer is still present, however the "Coming summer 1990" is gone.)

There was a quote on the commentary where Gale, when asked, said that he didn't understand directors going back and changing their flims. He said if they did that to BTTF, "That's not Back to the Future!" So things they very well could have gone back and fixed (like wires holding actors and stuff) were left alone for the sake of presenting them exactly the way they originally were.

The "To Be Continued ---->" title card at the end of the first Back to the Future was added for the home video release, because they didn't intend on making a sequel when they released it in theatres. So the DVD does not have this title card.
The end of Back to the Future II even has the teaser trailer for Part III as shown in theatres, even though I personally wouldn't mind it if they would have removed it. Kind of ruins it for a first-time watcher of the DVD set. (No problem, I just made my own DVDr with the trailer snipped out.)

I respect them a lot, and it's a sharp contrast to George Lucas.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Hell, I kinda wish the Coming Summer 1990 tag was still in there. But it's a very minor complaint, and not even a complaint really. To this day, no DVD set I have is more treasured than those BTTF discs. The transfers look gorgeous. They are the closest you can come to watching them in the theatres because they're the exact same movies on a different format. They went to painstaking trouble to remove previous home video elements that were added later, like the To Be Continued... and even the redub of Doc's "You made it!" line, things I was completely ignorant of, and if they had left them there, I would have been none the wiser. But they care about their product. They cared so much that Universal distributed free replacement discs when the fans realized and complained about misframing. By contrast, the Star Wars discs have problems, and it's immediately "a creative decision." I think it would be wonderful if, somehow, we managed to get the backlash against these DVDs so great and so widespread that it somehow crushed Lucasfilm as a company, and they were swallowed by a huge corporate entity. It would be just what he deserves. Obviously, it's a pipe dream, but I can dream, can't I?

Yep, those WERE perfect. And dirt cheap too. I got them right when they came out, and it was under thirty bucks at walmart. Not only were they the absolute original films, they were anamorphic and looked GREAT. Not only that, it had great bonus features. Instead of just making a new documentary and leaving the old ones in the shadows, they gave us the old featurettes and the new ones, which was really fun to watch, because it showed how the filmmakers have changed in the twenty year gap between featurettes. If only George Lucas gave Star Wars this much dignity. I remember seeing so many featuretts and documentaries growing up, and I don't believe I'll ever see them again. (Though Empire of Dreams is really a very good documentary.)

You can be sure that Best Buy, Circuit City and Wal-Mart are going to be stumbling over each other to have the best price (and as usual, they won't be advertising the price in their flyers- you'll have to go into the stores to find out what the prices).

Also, it's possible that Best Buy will have a special "exclusive" gift with the purchase of all 3 - so I'm going to wait and see what they come up with on 9/12. They had a really nice bonus DVD when the Indiana Jones DVD set came out, and a Beatles poster when the Yellow Submarine DVD was released.

Wal-Mart and/or Circuit City (or even Target) may have gifts as well.
