Moving in from the Basher's Sanctuary (TF.n) — Page 6

Well its obvious that there is a prejudice there that no longer can be ignored. Before it was simply a prejudice but now its become harrasement. I will be bringing it up to people higher in the chain of command, if only to make them aware that people are noticing and not liking it, and not just "radicals" or OOT "fanatics". Its sad when people can say there "originaltrilogy.com people are crazy," "you guys are ungrateful," "you guys are getting what you deserve," "most people like the SE anyway," including nearly all of these also said by a mod, and then my response "no, you see this site is somewhat slanted in its views, which are much more pessimistic elsewhere, and the majority of the people who paid $307 million in 1977 dont even post here" gets me banned. That is simply absurd, especially when my previous comments were by far the most informative and constructive in that thread. This has really irked me in a very personal way. I'm considering not even going back there but i know if i abandon that place only worse things will happen there. Fight the evil empire!

Zombie, the one thing that amazes me on that site to this day is the lack of respect for Star Wars '77. Even if I am the only one defending that movie in those forums, I won't give up, cause they are not going to get away with the crap they say about that great film. "The first hour is too boring, the lightsaber fight is not as fast as ROTS, the effects are so outdated, we want to see Vader meet with The Emperor after the death star explodes." They want to put stupid shit in that movie to move it further from the classic it is, and closer to another run of the mill prequel movie.

Before I got to that site, I never dreamed any Star Wars fans would hate Star Wars! I know many friends growing up who loved ESB & ROTJ more, but they always said it was a classic and a great movie, but they found other things in the sequels that made them like em alittle bit more, and I never had a problem with that.

What really irks me is that Lucas caters to TF.n audience now in all the releases he puts out in good quality when they bury his only classic SW movie he ever directed. And we are the true defenders of the Original Star Wars movie that made it all possible for the sequels, and we get non-anamorphic spit in your face quality. This is the only time I truly have turned on Lucas & the newer fans, and I have to say this has left a bad taste in my mouth as a SW fan. I never thought that would be possible.

I really wish George Lucas could log onto that site and see "ANH...is it meh?" and look at the monsters he has created by making too many changes.

I just signed up over there. Reading through it though, I'm really at a loss as to what to say though. I guess if I see any original defenders getting ganged up on like I saw last week I'll chime in. I've never been in an "internet fight" before.

It appears my ban has either ended or been lifted. Viva la resistance.

I sent this message to an administrator:

"I would like to bring to your attention an incident that occurred a few days ago in the Classic Trilogy forum. In the discussion thread “**Official Thread** The unaltered Original Trilogy to be released on DVD,” forum moderator TwilekJedi made a number of bans, including myself LordHelmet1 and Harlock. Not only were these completely unwarranted and unnecessary, they reflected a person bias of said moderator.
At various points in the discussion, the conversation naturally turned to how the originals films were and are perceived by the general public, a perception which is changing and is often forgotten. It was this that first revealed the personal prejudice of TwilekJedi, who aggressively called my observation “ridiculous,” among other things, and had previously made statements such as “you people are getting what you deserve,” etc. in regards to OOT fans who have been understandably disappointed with the lacklustre treatment in the upcoming release. As more and more anti-OOT posters spoke their minds, the website originaltrilogy.com and its poster was inevitably ridiculed, calling them “crazy” and “ungrateful.” These remarks were allowed by TwilekJedi, who shared their sentiment. When I then explained that much of the site represents a slanted view of the OOT since a lot of the older fans have left, I was banned, as was like-minded fans such as Harlock.

The full text of my post was as follows:

“I agree.

And i also think that TF.N represents a severely slanted view of Star Wars fandom. That may be hard to realise or fathom if this is the only place you view or post, but the dissatisfaction of the SE and PT is very strong just about everywhere else--and this is ignoring the fact that to the majority of the world Star Wars is simply the first film, or at most the OOT. They saw it, they loved, they moved on--95% of the people who plunked down a combined $307 million in 1977 don't post here, or on the internet at all. The fact that all dissenters here have been basically squashed and forced out is very disheartening--they were marginalised to the point where the only place they could post their voice was the insultingly-named "Bashers" Sanctuary and now that is gone. I myself never made one post there but i am pointing all this out so that people realise that the OOT is far, far, far more important than the majority of posters here realise.”

I messaged Twilek to find out what the basis was for such harsh treatment, and his reply was as follows:

“This ban is for completely derailing the OOT-DVD thread by discussing fans not
too long after a mod-warning, coupled with the fact that you were edited (at
least twice) for that sort of thing before.
Ban is for 24 hours. –TLJ”

But this is completely false, misleading and inappropriate. Not only was I NOT steering the conversation, I had never once been addressed by Twilek, either privately or publicly, and NONE of my posts had been edited and/or deleted (after I replied to his message, of course some were). My actual post on how “the OOT is more important to the rest of society” itself was a response to OTHERS who were de-railing the conversation by saying how unimportant it was (personally, I think this issue is completely relevant in the first place but I digress). I have also been the most constructive and informative poster in that thread, since I have been making custom screen-captures to compare various versions of the saga, digging out 1977 screener photographs and dissecting the release process of 35mm film, since I work in the cinematography department of the motion picture industry. My comments have never been personal, inflammatory, irresponsible or unreasonable, and I have always prided myself as one of the more constructive contributors to this site.

But this is ridiculous. In my seven years on these forums I have never once been banned, nor have any of my posts ever been edited or deleted by moderators. Twilekjedi, I later found out, was also the one who closed down the Bashers Sanctuary, and has also banned many OOT fans since then. There is a personal prejudice at work here, and not only is it pushing away many intelligent posters, it will soon turn these forums into “happy,” ignorant Lucas-lands, which many dissenters I have encountered elsewhere already feel—prejudice like this is ruining TFN’s reputation.

And I consider this a case of personal harassment.

What’s worse, I am not even some OOT anti-Lucas “fanatic”—I actually PREFER the SE for the most part, and I am a PT fan. But now even moderates like myself are being pushed around and festering grudges.

This has to stop. There is a reason why the Classic Trilogy forum is filled with people who think A New Hope is “meh,” and it is because all of those that have disagreed have been forced out. I think its great that we have fans that have both viewpoints on the situation and that we can argue about silly stuff like this, but unfortunately the fascistic abuse certain higher-ups are wielding is turning this place into something I no longer feel like I want to be a part of.

I didn’t know who I could turn this complaint to, and seeing as you are labelled “administrator” it seems you would be most appropriate. I would like this behaviour brought up with other mods, and perhaps even some disciplinary action involved because it really has gotten ridiculous as of late. I have been here for seven years (eight actually) and never had a single problem with the otherwise-great people who maintain this place, and have always received a great deal of respect for my insight, but I have been personally harassed and insulted and I feel that this should issue should not just fade away. This is a major problem.

Thanks for listening to my lengthy complaint.

Sincerely,

Mike Kaminski"

Hopefully something will come of it.

You prefer the SEs, zombie?! Well, you need to be banned from here then since you represent an alternative viewpoint! Heh, just kidding, but I am surprised. I didn't know that. But damn, those TF.n boards are crazy. It almost makes me sick to my stomach to read this thread.

I would like to bring up a point, though. Although we are, specifically, an OOT site (as is implied in the name), sometimes I get a bit frustrated at how a lot of posters here are so quick to flame those few people who come in here with alternate viewpoints. I don't agree with them either, and I'm quick to retaliate with a counter-argument, but most of the time, their ideas are met with personal attacks. So maybe we could stand to learn a few lessons from the debacle that is TF.n. We can't expect others to play nice if we don't play nice.

EDIT: Just to be fair, I'm going to admit that I've blown up at a few people in the past as well, and I need to work on that. But if they start attacking us, then it's on!

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

My ideal version is actually somewhere between the SE and OOT but i find the updated Yavin, Tatooine, etc. generally help to the visual enjoyment of the film. This may or may not have to do with the fact that the quality of presentation of the material is so much better. Obviously i still watch the OOT frequently though.

TwilekJedi wasn't the only one involved in the closure of the Sanctuary. IIt's a conspiracy that leads all the way to the top with everybody denying the truth. We get Strilo and Strype defending their actions in that it was time to move on and to let the issue die off, But it was the most active thread on TFN and had well over 900 pages. In the comes thread about the closure, most mods feined ignorance of the planned lock, but supported the decision. Political spin at it's worse and most obvious.
There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.

The fun part here is that, if the original Star Wars was truly "meh" then there would not be The Force Net or this place either. There would not be Star Wars fans. If the film had sucked or if it had been as they so eloquently put it "meh", the prequels would not exist either. You can't argue with history. (Unless you work at Lucas ranch or post at the force net) But somewhere along the line line they forgot this simple truth and thought that yes, it is a good idea to mock the original film since Yoda is "kule" with a lightsaber. "Li3k OMG Like Vader sucks in ANH. He is lik3 not twirling his lightsaber!!!!!11!!!" And we should all spout the company line:" Back in the seventies they didn't have cgi, but now since we have cgi we should have a duel between Alderaan and the DeathStar. Lucas has every right to add Gungans wherever he wants to. Hell add a few gungans in Raiders too while you're at it."

I used to post on tf.net a while back, but I got turned off by the nasty, childish tone of so many members, as well as their intolerance of anyone who didn't like the special editions.

tf.n... I think that's the first placed I was ever banned from. I can't really remember why though... I hope I last longer around here.

oh now I remember. I posted something in the basher sanctuary and the mod there sent me packing for breaking the 'films not fans' rule. I remember I was venting because I guess I was flamed for something in the episode 3 forum discussing grievous I think...and I just had to say my piece somewhere... darn I have no idea what I said... well it was a great place to read.

Why was it closed?

TFN is also the first place I’ve ever been banned from. I’ve been posting on forums and/or exchanging messages since the days of BBS in the eighties and I’ve never been banned. I always respect every opinion and I never attack the person unless CLEARLY provoked. I didn’t even attack when provoked for my last year on tfn because I knew it would result in a ban.

I think the forum was probably closed because it was a clear sign that the opinions of the “bashers” (and incidentally most people at this site) were valid. It’s kind of hard to pretend that George is perfect when the thread with the most traffic on a site that size is the “Basher’s Sanctuary.”

There is also the fact that the Sanctuary was pretty much the only place on the boards where one could hint at the bias of the mods and get a sympathetic ear. When the mods got to the point that they were just using the BS to target people for banning I started to use my sock more frequently. My real account was perma-banned (despite the fact that it was supposed to be a one day ban) and so was my sock. When the bans weren’t lifted after a week I decided I was done with TFN. I just couldn’t take the hypocrisy or the teenage (no offense to any teens here) mods power-tripping. I’ve led men into combat so I really don’t have the time, energy or inclination for that type of childish shit.

Still I’m glad that CJedi72, Zombie and Harlock continued the good fight

"Why was it closed?"

According to G-FETT, it was closed because a thread like that was unsustainable.

And you know what - he's partly correct. What the thread couldn't sustain was the sheer number of posts it received ! So much so that it had to be restarted four times!. Even more, if you count the old Snowboards version.

I won't even get into the number of views it had compared to others...

Haha, 13-year-old, snott-nosed moderators are so cool. TF.N is a site I would definitely never post on. There are too many people and that's far too confusing. Plus, I like relaxed moderation. If people say what they want when they want it filters out the weak. Over-moderation simply keeps out anything that might be disturbing.

Anyways, that statment of yours made a lot of good points, Zombie, but you should learn to make your points more concise in future. They would be more powerfully communicated that way.

Howdy Harlock, I signed up over at ORS yesterday and recieved approval to post in the Sanctuary today. I could probably get my tfn ban lifted if I complained loudly enough, but it just isn't worth it to me. I get much more stimulating and thoughtful conversation over here anyway.
