Wii package: what would you pay?

Author
Time
Edit: those are the AMERICAN prices so make the conversion yourself. Note that the 50$ pre-order appears to be in LOCAL currency. At least thats true for canada and australia. Oh, and take into account that this isn't a poll for what you THINK it will cost. Rather its about what you are willing to pay.

This is a branch of the wii thread. Toys'R'Us is taking pre-orders in Canada and Australia at the moment. (dunno about states) its $50 to set aside a pack of a Wii, 1 extra controller and a game. So how much would you be willing to pay for a package that comes with that?

Pack:
1 Nintendo Wii: comes with 1(2?) controller/nunchuck duo, 1 sensor bar, 1 Wii console (and possibly wii sports: unconfirmed as of now)
1 Extra controller/nunchuck duo
1 Game (possibly of own choice ?)

Heres the CONFIRMED launch list from ign. This does not have any fence sitters or un-announced games. Futhermore, mario galaxy and super smash bros brawl are not on the list as they will be coming out first quarter 2007 as opposed to 4th 2006. For all we know this list will double within the next 4-5 months. The wii is going to come out oct-nov. The other big names not listed but coming out within 8 montsh are wario ware, pangya golf, excite truck, sadness, final fantasy:crystal chronicles, sonic: wildfire, and fire emblem (and others ).

I put $199. That's really enough for any video game console unless it can simultaneously do my homework, wash my dishes, and serve me up a soda.

I totally agree. They would own the video gaming world, and it'd be just like we were back in the late '80s, early to mid '90s!

Umm.... this is for the pakage, not the console... Did you read the blurb?

Yeah, but in the past, all those packages have been bonuses, and, as far as I remember, it didn't jack up the price but just helped push sales. In the modern age, it's become more and more common simply to give the player a console and one controller. But I remember my NES came with two controllers, the SMB/Duck Hunt combo pak, and the Zapper. My Super NES came with two controllers, Super Mario World, Mario Paint, and the SNES mouse. Then I got my N64... console and controller. At least my GC was a bit better. One controller, Super Mario Sunshine, and a Memory Card 59 (which has disappeared, but it's okay since it ran out of room anyway). As an example of modern gaming, my PS2 came with one controller and Gran Turismo 3 bundled with it, and that didn't make it cost any extra. So I'm not used to expecting to have to pay more for bundles.

Videogames are overtaxed over here, so I'll be expressing the values in dollars, refering to how much I would be willing to pay over here.

The console, with no games and one controller, $350 (I won't pay more than that)
Every extra controller (might buy 3 more), $75 each
Each game (wanna buy at least Zelda, Sports, and Mario Galaxy and WarioWare when released): $50

I know the console is not going to be over $250, but that's how much I have planned to spend when it's released.

I've already pre-ordered, so I'm at Nintendo's mercy regardless. Iwata did confirm that the price would not exceed $250 US, though. Hopefully the dastardly shopkeepers in Australia don't do what they do with a lot of other stuff - simply multiply the American price by two (not an accurate conversion at all).

But even if it does turn out to be $500 including my free game, it'll still be the cheapest launch price ever.

Gaffer, unless my memory fails me none of those bundles (and there were others over time) where at launch. also bundles like this are not packaged by nintendo but rather by the retailer. while its true nes came with games there were various different bundles and i couldn't tell you what was the release package. i don't recall if snes had a game packaged with its launch but i think genesis had sonic and 1 controller.

after the system has been out for a bit they usually have bundles, generally special packages (n64 w/pod racer or n64 w/dk country). and iirc these where either slightly more or happened after the first price drop.

nintendo kept the system packaged with 2 controllers and/or a game the longest and their last 2 releases where 1 controller and no game .

now, this is not to say i dont think a system shouldnt come with 2 controllers and a game but thats a thing of the past and i doubt systems will release like that again (actually increases system cost).

so of all the systems you mentioned getting which were at launch and which weren't, cause that changes 'what your used to'.

basically if nintendo brings it out at 199 or less that will be system and 1 controller no games. any 'bundles' at launch will be retailer made. if it does come with wii sports price will def be 249.99 though my guess is 249.99 system and 1 controller accessories/games similar to those of n64/gc at launch $10 more max

*edit* i voted >299 based on what i said figuring it will be about $330 (to $350) for that package

I would pay around 150 bucks, seeing as it is not much more than a Gamecube with a new controller.

Actually, power-wise it is meant to be two GameCubes with a new controller...

The official Megadrive package I got was with Sonic the Hedgehog, Columns and Altered Beast, and it cost $299 Australian. Not too shabby at all, considering I still have it plugged in!

I'd pay up too two hundred fity, seeing as I'll be trading in my GameCube for it. Also, it looks like an awesome system, with the virtual console and the new controller. What I am not willing to do is pay the suggested price of sixty dollars a game.

sugg price is 50$ possibly less.

VC games could be under 15$ for new developers. 0.o

That would be great. If video games were priced like an average DVD, I would probably have had more consoles over the years.

I'm only willing to pay ~$199, which means I'll wait if it comes out higher than that.

Aparently I'm the one most inclined to pay MORE for the Wii. All those figures suggested here makes me wonder how much an average person would pay for a PS3, and how big of a fall will Sony take...

After learning I can download old NES and SNES games for a few bucks to play on the Wii I'm willing to pay a bit more. I mean, I already have a SNES emulator on my PC, but it's not the same, and some of the ROMS are buggy (for example I can't get past a level on Zelda even though I KNOW I've done all the puzzles correctly.

If they bring out a really good Star Wars game on it, that's it, I'm getting one no matter what.

Well, I still have both my NES and SNES in prime condition with nearly all the games I've ever really wanted to play. Besides, I don't plan on ever utilizing online gaming, so I wouldn't be able to download the old games anyway, so it's not really a draw for me. I'm very glad they're doing it (tired of ignorant children not knowing their roots), but I'm more interested in the new system.

I still have 2 NES's (one mint in the box, one for playing) and I also have a SNES, but they are both PAL and they are both in England.

I wouldn't pay any more than $249. But even that feels kinda high; maybe $229.

Why do they do Region Coding?
Author
Time
Not sure why really they do it. Piracy? But I'm not talking about encoding, I'm talking about the PAL/NTSC issue, which is something different. My English NES and SNES won't work with a standard American TV.

And I don't think SNES games were region coded anyway - they were just a different shape in the UK to the US so they didn't fit in the slot, but a simple adaptor fixed that. The UK SNES even looked different to the US one (UK one looked nicer IMO)

Well, the UK was an exact port of the Super Famicom, only with the words Super Nintendo. The US got a totally redesigned system. I agree that the Super Famicom/UK SNES looks better than the one we got. I'd love to get a Super Famicom off eBay someday, for reasons including the fact that it just looks so sleek!

Yeah, an Australian Megadrive (which, as I understand it, was the same as a European Megadrive) can play American Genesis games. In fact, EA and Bullfrog never changed their packaging or cartridges for Australian release, and they still worked too. So I guess most of that stuff must've happened from the Saturn onwards...
