What are you going to do with your SE discs? — Page 6

What would be best would be to hand deliver the box with all kinds of media present. Instead of just mailing it, make it a nice "presentation". Any volunteers?

I don't think Jay would support this. AFAIK, he's against buying the September discs in the first place.
I also don't think sending them all together is a good idea - it would be better to have mail trickling in constantly from all over.

I agree with THX. Many individuals sending in discs will look like a grassroots, bottom-up campaign. Sending them all in at once will look like astroturfing. And the talk of the cost of shipping is a bit much. These are just 80mm plastic discs here; even if we somehow get a hundred, they can all be put in a spindle and sent via Media Mail for three dollars, or priority for $8.10. I think it's better to organize this as a project, with a permanent or long-term website encouraging people to send the SE discs home.

That's true, it won't be expensive to send the discs- media mail is cheap.

Whether or not it's a better idea to send them in individually or in bulk will be something we'll have to think about and discuss over the next few months.

Yeah, but I think it would be cool to send them all together with one letter explaining why we're sending them back, followed by every single one of our names. That would really be sending the petition home.

It costs less than a dollar to send 3 discs without covers first class.

What a great statement that would make, though. I can see the headlines: "Hundreds of Star Wars fans flood George Lucas' mailbox with Special Edition DVD's". That note would be great to accompany it. "Thank you for the original versions of the Star Wars trilogy. It's a shame I was forced to buy the Special Editions as well. Since they are of no use to me, I am returning them to you.
Hahaha or better still:

"Thank you for the original versions of the Star Wars trilogy. It's a shame I was forced to buy the Special Editions as well. Since you love the Special Editions so much I thought I'd give my copy to you." LOL

I'd rather buy a second set, donate the OT discs from that set and send back two sets of the SSE. I agree with you that there is a lot of bitterness and juvenile posting about these movies and I've posted in other threads supporting LFL on the new release. However, packaging the discs with the SSE discs is ridiculous. This is not intended as an act of spite, or to get a chuckle. George Lucas has said he wants to know if people really want the OOT or the SSE. This is a simple and effective way to answer his question.
You're right btw, it's stupid to donate something you think is utter crap to charity, that's just plain rude!

This is sounding great! We should get this whole thing organized between now and summer.
And make sure to render them unusable before sending them in, or they'd just get resold probably. A scratch line across the disc will do the trick, as will a sharpie. I'm sure there are better methods, like cutting them halfway down with scissors.
I wouldn't do this. I would simply send it back in the condition it came with. It would be illegal to repackage the discs and sell them as new anyway, and scratches can be removed professionally, like your local video 2000 does all the time so that they'll play when rented.

Yeah, the postage isn't really the issue- it's going to be cheap either way.

I guess what we need to figure out is should we send them all together with a petition- and make a big statement, or send them in individually- like a.....constant.......steady........stream......like water torture.

If we decide to send them out individually, they should each be sent with a uniform letter -- one that we can all agree on.

Good idea. It'd be hell organizing it to send them all together, but if we could send them indavidually, with a letter we all agree on, that'd work perfectly. Here's a rough idea of what it should say.

To Whom it May Concern:

I have sent back this disc containing the 2004 Special Edition from the recent editions of the Original Trilogy released on September 12th, the one including the Unaltered Trilogy, because I quite frankly have no need for it. I bought this set for the Unaltered film, the version I prefer. Since I finally have the version of the film that I prefer, I find that this disc containing, what is in my mind, the inferior edition, is completely useless. I have what I wanted, you may do what you please with this disc. And please give us a remastered Hi-Def release of the Unaltered trilogy in the near future.

Sincerely,
Your Name Here

I don't know if that's what people had in mind, but I think something like that, polite but firm, would be good. We could use my rough draft here as a base so that we can keep revising it until we have a version we all agree on.

That's really good. I also like how boris ended his example, though, with, "Since you love the Special Editions so much I thought I'd give my copy to you." It's funny, biting, but it also almost makes us sound altruistic.

I don't think you'll get everyone to agree on the wording and I think individual letters would be better in some ways. My advice would be to keep your letters as brief and to the point as possible, as long as they mention:
1) you bought the set for the OUT;
2) you'd buy it again on an HD format.
Sending the discs back is an unequivocal insult to the SE and enough of a statement of displeasure. I don't think snide comments will help in any way.

I nuked my copy of Jedi last week. It gave Hayden the crispy treatment again. I WILL NOT watch that scene again.

The Jedi SE DVDs also make decent coasters.

That's a good suggestion. As long as we keep the notes short and to the point....

I definitely think we should all mail the same letter. It'd be really fitting- when we complained about the 16x9 issue, they just gave us a form response.

So we give them a form response when we send our discs back.

If someone is worried about Lucasfilm repairing the scratched discs, why not just cut them in half like a credit card ? Or break them into 1000 pieces like GL did to all the OT fans hearts

just a suggestion

Personally I won't be mailing in my SE discs - but if you do I strongly suggest you do not deface them. It sends a far stronger message if they recieve fully working discs.

I agree- the form letter idea is sounding better and better. Maybe it should say (in big letters) "FORM LETTER" at the top...LOL

Damaging the discs is not a good idea- it will seem petty. We should just leave them in tact. GL is not going to re-sell them.

How about this:

.......................................FORM LETTER............................................

Dear Mr. Lucas,

Enclosed, please find my three Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition DVDs that I received as a bonus when I purchased the Original Versions of the Star Wars Trilogy on September 12th.

I would have preferred that the Original Version DVDs be in a 16:9 anamorphic format, but since this is all that's currently available, I guess will have to settle for non-anamorphic for the time being.

I would much rather watch the Original Version DVDs in a non-anamorphic format than watch the Special Editions in an anamorphic format- so I give my DVDs to you. You may do with them what you like.

Sincerely,

Good, but it almost sounds like your completely content with a non-anamorphic release. I think that's the letter we should use, provided we add a sentance about liking to see an anamorphic, hi-def release in the future. Like so:

I think you we need to add something along the lines of 'with regard to your comments that sales of this set will show what versions the fans really want, I am returning the SE discs in oder to help you with your calculations' or something like that.

War does not make one great.

I like the idea of sending my un-wanted (and un-"fun") discs back to Lucasfilm, so count me in!

Getting some media attention would also be a bonus. Kind of reminds me of the No More AOL CDs initiative. Can we keep some sort of tally like them?
