Well, here the thing about the SE changes: I was raised some weird kind of christian thing. I forget what it's called. International churches of christ, I think. That's not overly important as I don't practice anymore. Anyhoo, a friends girlfriend turned out to be wiccan and was worried I might have a problem with that due to the christian thing. I laughed and said I had a bigger problem with her boyfriend's catholicism. See, the closer it is, the worse the differences are.

Personally, a lot of the chages to the SE just go right by me. They are minor effects enhancements and I really don't notice them. Others, however, are terrible for a variety of reasons depending on the given scene. So I reasoned that i could pick and choose which effect i liked and which I didn't, but decided that was a fool's errand and it was better to not care for any of the changes and stick with the originals.

Truth be told, Star Wars is unprecidented in this regard. Sure, alternate versions of films have been around for a while, but that would usually be movies that didn't fair overly well in the first place, like, say, Blade Runner. There are at least three versions of this thing, the original theatrical release, the video release, and the director's cut. This is, alternate versions are often used as a marketing tool for films that didn't do well or find an audience, hence why you'll find few who know or care about the alternate cuts of Blade Runner. Star Wars on the other hand was immensely popular so any additions or alterations needed to be handled with extreme care. Several of them were not. They look like some guy with a Mac and video editing software added those things. And like how one small fly can ruin an entire bowl of soup, these changes ruin the entire trilogy... at least for those who dislike them at any rate. Somehow I think that if Lucasfilm had done a better job on the additions in the SE, there would be no conflict. Or much less, anyway.

Anamorphic or not, I don't feel it is as big as a deal for me as making sure that Luke's line of "You're lucky you don't taste very good" is still intact.

Mat-lines and crappy Obi-Wan saber effects be damned. I have my OCP transfers for that.

Call me crazy, but that is one of my biggest concerns as well.

That one always bugged me a lot. Did they think it was politically incorrect or something that they changed it to such a bland, generic line? Seriously, there must be a reason...

My theory is that the don't taste very good line was looped in after the fact. The line in the SE was the line said on the set and in the process of cleaning up the negative, a print without the looped line was used and they were too busy making that god-awful wampa scene to notice they goofed.

No the "dont taste good" line was improvised on-set. The "lucky to get out of there" was the scripted line, and to me it sounds like ADR.

I read somewhere -- possibly an interview with Burtt -- that they used the 70mm mix for the latest version of Empire. They considered the 35mm mix "canonical," but used the 70mm as it was a better source. Whatever. And then they just "didn't notice" the line change until some fan pointed it out to them.

Of course, that's there usual tack of evasion. Either it's a "deliberate creative decision" or "we didn't notice it -- therefore, it doesn't matter, and you're a real dweeb for thinking that it does."

(I know there's other differences between the 35mm and 70mm mixes, so this could all be wrong.)

That sounds familiar, actually. Maybe I read the same stuff. At any rate, it's just one of those things where it's hard to believe that they "didn't notice."

Of course, there are some pretty illiterate sign makers out there, too, spelling things out in huge letters and not even noticing, it seems (that's where proofreading comes in, fellas!). The latest one I saw was "no parkig" at the local Honda. They also advertised the new Honda Ridgeline on three big signs with it spelled Ridegline! Also used 'too' instead of 'to' on another sign. Yes, I notice these things a lot...

Mailing the SE discs back to George Lucas is a great idea- let's keep this thread going, folks!

Who's planning on doing it? I was going to sell my SE discs from the boxed set on eBay, and then use the space in the box to hold the new DVDs, but now I don't know....I really like this idea better.

I can just imagine it being like the scene from Miracle on 34th St., where the mail carriers bring in tons of bags of SE DVDs, and dumping them on GL's desk! LOL

i'm also planning to mail the SE discs back, but should i make them unplayable or not?

Ultimatly, making them unplayable is beyond the point. Maybe just mark them up with a sharpie on the label side so Lucas can't re-sell them, but so they can be donated or something.

Sending the SE discs back is an appropriate statement with an inescapable meaning.
Rendering them unplayable appears spiteful and is likely to make the statement be ignored.

Considering the cost, I don't know if I'm willing to shell out $90 for them. However, the statement sending the updated versions is priceless! I'll have to consider it.
George Lucas was seduced by the dark side. The OOT ceased to exist in his mind and became the Special Editions...." "They're more maching now than movies. Twisted and evil."

$90? Even the official Star Wars website is selling the whole set for $60 (and you get a free Who shot first card, which I'm sure you really really want).

I agree- I don't think they should be made unplayable, what's the point in that?

Just sending them in will get the message across just fine.

Is there some way we can get something official organized? Like, an address where we could all send them to, so that they can be collected and sent in all in one package? Do you think that would be better than just each of us sending them to Lucasfilm individually?

I totally agree that they should be sent all together. This will have the biggest impact.

I can just imagine Lucas' reaction.

Random Employee: Um...Sir, we have a package for you.

Lucas: What is it?

Random Employee: It appears to be a crate full of DVD's from last week's release.

Lucas: Hah! I KNEW people didn't want the Unaltered trilogy! They just wanted the special edition.

Random Employee: Umm...the discs are all disc one....

Lucas: What the....Oh, I get it! People must have beeen mistaken. Since we highlited this release with the OOT, which I told you you shouldn't do, people thought the OOT was on Disc ONE and thought the special edition was on disc 2, so they mistakenly sent back disc one. Find out who they're from and send them back. I don't want them to just have the bonus material disc.

Random employee: Umm...I think it was on purpose sir. See, there was this note with the package and it---

Lucas: Shut up and send the disc back. Also, now that we know that people don't want the Unaltered trilogy, get someone to burn every last print and master we have left, alright?

Random Employee: Um...Ok...

Even though my last post might not have showed it, I do think the idea to send them back is a great one. If Lucas really was conducting his "experiment" to see which version the public likes more, he'd release two seperate versions come September. The 2004 editions, and the unaltered versions. THEN he'd see which one was preferred.

But since he isn't doing that, his reaction when these sets sell great will be that people only bought them for the 2004 special edition. So we need to do what we can to show him which version we prefer. (If the fact that the petition here had over 72,000 signatures by the time it stopped accepting didn't show him.) So sending the discs back is a great idea.

I'll take part in this as well. The one-big-package idea is great. The question then is, who will send the final shipment?

Well, someone who is close to Lucasfilm to keep the cost low. Everybody can mail their discs along with some cash to help pay for the big shipment. Or maybe we create a PayPal account and start collecting or something. I'd volunteer to do it, but I'm in Canada, so it will cost a lot to ship to California.

Has anyone thought GL might have wanted to wait until the hidef thing was in full swing, and then magically produce really awesome cleaned up hidef versions of the original trilogy on hddvd or blu-ray? But because we kept crying about it instead he's going to release a bunch of shoddy original trilogy re-releases in order to milk more money from us?

Well, if that's the case, he's still being a greedy asshole for pushing this on us right before a better one. Although, this release is him being a greedy bastard anyway since it's the same special editions for the third time in less than two years!

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

No, I don't think that's the case. The outcry for the OT on DVD had died down a bit, since the 2004 DVD release. I think most of us had resigned ourselves to the idea that the OT was never coming out on DVD. I even bought a LD player, and transferred the 1995 LDs to DVD. I made one set for myself, and another set for my nephew. I figured those would be the only DVDs of the OT I would ever have.

What about Jay? Do you think he'd be interested in spearheading this? I'd be happy to send my SE discs along with a check for a few bucks, to help cover the shipping cost to whomever is willing to pack up and ship the discs.

Somebody who lives out west would be best, to keep the shipping cost down. Hopefully - there will be a LOT of discs!!
