at least england's won it once. the US only just started qualifying after a 40 year dry spell... Yeah, so by my calculations they have to wait another 40 years of actually playing in the tournament without winning (like England) and then it will be their turn.

And yeah, the Japanese call it 'sakkaa', but that's obviously due to a heavy American influence as well. I've never heard a Japanese person even mention football (or should I say, 'futtobooru'?).

I didn't realise you were a fellow new-immigrant. I've been here almost exactly a month and a half too.Having lived in America for a month and a half

Well, I've been and gone in America - I lived all around for a month and a half with friends I have in different US cities - at the beginning of the year (after living in Japan for three weeks).
Speaking of Japan, OOOH BABY, WE WON! Man, you should have seen the excitement of my friends and fellow countrymen. We had a gathering of about fifteen people at a friend's house in front of a screen projector and we were jumping and screaming like a bunch of psychos! Man, we were so dirty about that unpunished blockage of our goalkeeper in the first half, it was just so brilliant to see us take it back in the last ten minutes with a convincing three goals! The Aussie ideal of the underdog and 'fair go' was alive and well in this game. The Japanese were taking dives left, right, and centre, wasting tonnes of time (I bet they regretted that) after their first goal, but we all had faith. We kept the pressure on, kept the possession up, and kept taking those shots. I think we were definitely the better team and the third goal was just to prove it. We are so proud of our boys right now.
It was a pity to see the Japanese play so dirty (they almost faked more injuries and falls than Netherlands and Serbia combined last night), as I know them to be such an honour-bound people. Especially after the media attack they put on us before the match (accusing us of being too rough, which perhaps explains the referee's over-vigilance to penalise).
