How do you make good titles for a movie?

Author

I've done plenty of editing, but is there any easy straight forward app to make some good quality professional titles for a film? Say if you were re-naming a film for a fanedit. I feel this is an area that needs to be done well.

Thanks for any answers.

Premiere or Max could work, I suppose. Nearly any video progam can make titles, it all depends on what you personally like.

Thanks, I'm now using Ulead Video Studio 10 which seems to offer the best titling of consumer editing apps. East to use too.

If you want something fancy, After Effects would probably be the way to go.

I suspect, but that's a bit too technical for me I think.

Well, it's important to balance your desire with your willingness to learn the tools at hand. Buttering up your technically-versed friends is helpful too. Darth Editous and MeBeJedi have always been helpful in areas where I just plain suck. Still, if you're wanting to do professional titles, and After Effects is the recommended tool, it's best to experiment with the tool to get the effect you want. Then you have another skill under your belt, the titles you wanted, and the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself.

I made a title with After Effects once for an original short I made, a couple years ago . . . it was a "typewriter" effect where letters appear one-by-one as if they were being typed. I think I referred to the tutorials that came with AE's documentation to do that -- definitely not as difficult as I thought. (Of course, that effect is fairly simple compared to the awesome things I'm sure you can do with AE.) I haven't done much more than that with AE, but like ADM says, experimenting with a tool is definitely the best way to master it.

After Effects is an amazing program. I tell people it's s basically Photoshop for video, but that doesn't completely cover it. You can do anything with it. It's used everywhere... commercials, film titles, some film/tv fx, you name it. And once you get the hang of it, it's a lot of fun. It makes motion graphics so easy. But the learning curve can be high.

I recommend "Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects" by Trish & Chris Meyers. It's now a 2 volume book. They start you off from the beginning, and quickly get into some very cool stuff. Very easy to follow, and after you get the basics, you can jump from chapter to chapter, just focusing on the effects you want to create.

If you want professional titles, After Effects is the way to go.
