Well, they had a 95% top tax rate then ("there's one for you, nineteen for me" was really true) - it's not that bad now.

Don't mind chatty, just wondered if you guys wanted to hop over there?

Heh, is it any wonder the Americans revolted? By the way, I have to ask, how is the American Revolution taught in Great Britain (assuming that it is)? That has always been something on my mind!

The American what? Never heard of it.

Pretty much how it happened - America wanted it's independence, there was a fight, we lost. Nobody is bitter or anything like that. It's not like with Germany where we still bring up thw world wars and rub it in their face.

Uh no, unfortunally, not any more. Might be in either Chicago, Washington DC or Toronto soon. But things just keep changing, so I'm not sure anymore.

I WILL be in Japan from July 1st to July 15th, 2007, though. That is confirmed.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

I'm not accusing the Brits of being bitter, but it's always assumed that history has a certain slant to it based on who's writing it. I saw a sign from a Japanese museum that blamed the U.S.'s aggressions for their involvement in WWII.

I mean, obviously, you're not going to take credit for a war you didn't win. I'm referring more to the cause of the war. In our history books, it goes into a lot about how the Britains were essentially greedy despot bastards who took away our livelihood until we had no choice but to fight. I assumed that British textbooks referred to us as ungrateful upstarts or something like that.

My history teacher was excellent and we always examined events from all angles. I also took advanced level history, so it was probably a bit more detailed.

I don't believe history should be taught from any one point of view, and I spit on those who do so. (judging by my wife's knowledge of history, she was taught very badly).

So does that mean that both party's reasonings were legitimatized to a certain extent?

I believe so. If anything I would say the Americans who wanted their independence had more ground to argue and the English were just being greedy colonialists, but so would you if you founded a civilisation only to have it leave you and grow into the world's biggest most powerful country.

This is going to be kind of tough. I'll have to mentally trace some of the driving routes we've used going places...

Wisconsin
Ohio
Indiana
Illinois
Michigan
Pennsylvania
Kentucky
Tennesse
Georgia
Florida
South Carolina
North Carolina
Virginia
West Virginia
Maryland
Mississippi ?? (we might have traveled entirely within Tennesse to the Arkansas border)
Arkansas
Oklahoma
Kansas ?? (we might have traveled entirely within Oklahoma to the Missouri border)
Missouri
Colorado

Outside the US:
Canada (just Ontario)

Yes, that's it, I've never left the continent. At some point in my life (and I know I've mentioned this on these boards) I'd like to travel across Southern Germany sampling local cuisine. One of my German teachers in high school said that every town has their own beers and sausages. well, I don't think, but I'm not sure I ever met a sausage I didn't like.

Chaltab, how's North Carolina? I've never been but it really appeals to me for some reason.

Well, it's like Tennessee with a beach. Except I doubt you've been to Tennessee, so I'm not sure that really helps you. So... Let's see.

In the west part of the state, it's got the appalachain mountains (Which actually start in Great Britain somewhere and go underneath the ocean to the US), and a bunch of small tobacco communities. The middle of the state relatively flat. Raleigh, the capitical, is a really nice town and Duke has a really nice campus.

Actually, I believe TheSessler lives in NC, so he can probably help you better than I can.
