And that what I was trying to say- that the Holy Grail of DVD will never, ever be released in any decent form. Lucasfilm's release has made them look like the mafia

I really don't know the inner psyche of Lucas, and I can't say that the divorced had nothing to do with this resentment towards the OOT.

I see it as, the man is a perfectionist. But he's human so he can never make or even come close to perfection, esspecially when it comes to his art. The man is like a plastic surgery addict. He keeps seeing flaws where there are none and ruins his once beautiful, ground breaking film.

I also believe that someday down the road we will get a decent DVD transfer. Hell, Blade Runner is finally getting the transfer it so desperatly needed. Once Lucas is dead, they'll release an ultimate edition. There are too many people out there, and who work for Lucasfilm that refuse to let the originals die. I believe that we will get an offical release someday. For now, these DVD will be the best quality so far, and to me it's worth the $36 fee.

Good points, Invader. I've said similar things myself about how he won't stop tinkering with them until the day he dies. That's just the way it is because he's such a perfectionist. But changes that are viewed as beautiful to one person may seem ugly or just plain unnecessary to others.

The comment about them releasing an ultimate edition after he dies could very well happen (even if he puts a "don't you dare do what I think you'll do!" clause in his will?). It happened with the anime "Metropolis." The creator, Osamu Tezuka, said he never wanted that comic series made into a movie, but after he died, they did it. And it was wonderful! But then the guys that did it joked (perhaps half joked) that now Tezuka's ghost will haunt them.

I'm pretty sure I know why GL keeps changing them. I think it's true that he looks at the orange blob under the landspeeder or the immobile dewback and hates it. He remembers how he wanted it to be and sees how it didn't work. In other words, what he says his motivation is, is true. This doesn't make it right, on the other hand.

So then he overcompensates and loses all sense of artistic subtlety.

Right - and "fixes" things that weren't wrong in the first place.

But we are dealing George Lucas here- he breaks new ground by hitting new lows in DVD transfers and director's cuts. Who knows how much longer he will live- maybe another 20-30 years. And I'm certain that Jett Lucas will want to continue to support the SE above all costs. Lets just face it- the chances of SW wars getting released in a decent qaulity digital format are as rare as a virgin birth. DVD was meant for SW, but decades down the road this will be the most mutilated franchise and known as the only three movies to never get a decent DVD.

LOL to the original post. It's probably true is the sad part....

I read through some of the posts, and saw that some people commented about you have to buy the release and make it sell incredibly well if we want a blu-ray disc realease. While this is true, George Lucas hates the OOT so much, I can just see the conversation now if the numbers come in huge....

JIM: Mr. Lucas, look how many people ran out and bought the Limited Edition release of Star Wars!!! It's the best sales we've ever had for a home-video release!

GEORGE: People DID want the special editions on individual sets! I KNEW it!

JIM: And it couldn't have anything to do that it had the Unaltered Version as well?

GEORGE: People don't buy DVD's for Bonus Features. Especially when the Bonus Feature is a half-assed piece of crap made in the 70's.

JIM: So what about a high-definition release of the Unaltered Trilogy? It's apparent the fans want it.

GEORGE: Jim, you're a moron. Fans don't buy discs to get Disc 2. They buy em' for what's on Disc One. THe incredible sales ofthis release tell us that fans want the special editions more than ever!!! Jim, go get rid of every version of the Unaltered Trilogy left, and scour every house in the United States to find home-video version of the releases. When you have them all, burn them.

JIM: Really?

GEORGE: It's either that or I fire you.

JIM: On it.

C3PX said: Gaffer is like that hot girl in high school that you think you have a chance with even though she is way out of your league because she is sweet and not a stuck up bitch who pretends you don’t exist… then one day you spot her making out with some skinny twerp, only on second glance you realize it is the goth girl who always sits in the back of class; at that moment it dawns on you why she is never seen hanging off the arm of any of the jocks… and you realize, damn, she really is unobtainable after all. Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Still very funny. Lucas always leaves himself room to twist things. Hell, he doesn't even need room to twist things based upon stuff he's said in the past. He apparently doesn't need a functional level of logic.
