I think a lot of people would disagree with this statement seeing as the OOT DVDs don't meet even the most basic standards of a modern DVD release.

Sure, it's open to interpretation. The way I read the petition, it has - but you wrote it, so I bow to your judgement. Either way, I think a new petition, specifically worded to what is wanted beyond the forthcoming release, would be a good idea.

I belive the best policy is: if you don't have anything good to say about something, better not to say anything at all.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

My my, I never ever wished for his death. The most absolutely worst thing I've envisioned is this:

(I am sitting in my room, George Lucas walks in flanked by Rick McCallum and Steve Spielberg)

GL: I'm transferring the only remaining prints of Star Wars to my mansion - they'll have to stay there but they'll be safe.

ME: Oh perfect... you fixed us reeall good didn't you, *my friend* - (takes a swing at the Bearded One).

GL: I've done all I can! I'm sorry but I've got my own problems to fix.

ME: You're a real hero.
VADER: Let me look on you with my own eyes...

LUKE: Dad, where are your eyebrows?

A bunch of DVDs are laying around. An old knight asks for you to choose the O-OT.

Me: This msut be it! Such a beautiful photoshop cover! *opens the DVD, puts it on the 1080p 16x9 TV*

Me: NOOOOO It's not anamorphic! There are black canvas all around it! Nooooo *starts to get old and dies*

Knight: He chose... poorly. *shows a Dr. Gonzo set* This was the one! Now get out before I call the cops. Get out!

Off course we don't want George Lucas to die. Especially since we don't have a proper version of the OOT yet.

I think most of us here want him to stop tampering with the OOT before he does even more damage to the movies than he has already done with the 1997 and 2004 Special Editions!

It surpises me that George Lucas, being the 'quality freak' that he is, has finally agreed to have the OOT included on the september 2006 release in such (even for extra material) sub-standard quality.

With the 30th Anniversary (and yet another DVD release) just around the corner, GL would have been welel adviced to waite a while longer and REALLY make an effort or the OOT on DVD. This means investing money into the project, but I'm sure it will generate enough money to earn the investment back (and then some)....

When someone reaches the financial status of George Lucas, the people who work under them tend to hide their true opinions about their work. They all become "yes-men" in a way. Some of the ideas for the PT were truly questionable, but nobody spoke up. I will give George Lucas credit for following his vision, wherever it leads him, but he needs to realize that not everyone will understand or appreciate that vision.

You reminded me of something with that. Anyone here in the UK watch Top Gear last week when Ewan McGregor was on the show. Jeremy Clarkson asks him what it was like to be Obi Wan and be in the new films, and Ewan responds in a totally apologetic way, half implying that he doesn't value the new films at all compared to the OT. You'd think he would have mentioned something a little earlier to Mr Lucas (say while filming EP1) instead of sticking it out for over 6 years and 3 films. Oh well, case of "keep yer mouth shut and keep raking in the money".

Ewan McGregor made his feelings about the prequels clear long before the trilogy wrapped.

And his uncle made his own feelings clear about the trappings of the saga in general.

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

I am reminded of the An Evening With Kevin Smith DVD which is a bunch of Q&A appearances by Mr. Smith at various universities around the country. In one segment, he talked about his involvement with a documentary he did with Prince. You know the Purple Rain guy. And how far gone the purple one has become. one of Prince's assitants explained it that Prince has been living in Princeworld for some time now and he doesn't understand things the way you and I do. Such as (paraphrasing):

Prince will come to us and say "I need a camel."

And we will say, "Prince, it's 3 AM in Minnesota in January, and you need a camel. This is not physically nor psychologically possible."

Basically, he's been surrounded by people who have fullfilled his every whim for so long that he does not realize just how stupid it is to ask for things like a camel in Minnesota at 3 AM in January and then to expect this request to be fullfilled immediately.

Michael Jackson is similarly gone into Michaelworld as was seen in that interview show a few years ago now.

Compared to these guys, Lucas is very down to Earth

But Prince was, and in my opinion still is, a musical genius. George Lucas made one good movie 29 years ago.

Yeah, but that don't matter. STar Wars was a big enough hit to allow Lucas to go into Georgeworld. However, it does seem that Georgeworld is not as batshit insane as Princeworld or, God help us, Michaelworld.

There's a difference between being batshit insane and the work that one produces. Prince is obviously a nut, but still has a creative and cultural edge. Since he likes camels does that mean his music consists entirely of camel noises? No. While I haven't personally listened to them, his latest albums have sold relatively well and have been well received by critics. There are tons of people out there who are goofy and/or complete assholes, but they still come up with whatever it is they do that is culturally and creatively relavent. However, GL has lost any semblance of an edge, and unfortunately his decision making process when it comes to all things star wars is obviously ruled by his ego/personal problems/isolation/take your pick.

So I guess that means that Lucas wakes up his kids at 3 in the morning in January and asks for a piece of camel poop?

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

George Lucas was, more than anything else, a movie franchise marketing genius.
