Time to accept what we are given and be grateful? — Page 2

Grateful we are not. Accept this I cannot.

If this is going to be the final, absolute release of the OOT, the the anamorphic v. Letterbox issue is out the window, and I'll sell everything I have on DVD concerning SW so I don't have to really pay a cent for bad tranfers. (I don't have any bootlegs) But in reality, I'm avoiding this like the plauge.

I'm pretty sure they'll use the PAL masters used for the PAL THX WS LDs released in Europe.

Actually, according to another film archivist/restoration expert on the HTF, the Laserdiscs released in PAL format from the 93 masters were upscaled from the NTSC. there were no real PAL transfers. It would be the same thing here. If there were PAL masters I'm sure they'd work from those and convert them to NTSC for the increased resolution--but they're not. the NTSC masters are what they have, and the PAL DVD's will be sourced from that.

I find this hard to believe, because there is more detail visible in Moth3r's DVD set (which is made from the PAL LDs) than any of the NTSC sets. If you are right, though, then that would mean there is higher detail visible in the NTSC tape master that didn't make it to LD. If so, that's another reason the new DVDs will be good.

I think THX is correct about more resolution making it to the Pal laserdiscs. So they will no question look better, maybe even good. By today's standards for dvd, they will be terrible. Today, non anamorphic is considered just as bad as only releasing it in pan & scan. I don't think we should accept this. In fact I think we shouldn't be so willing to buy anything that says Star Wars on it, good or bad. Lucas has found a weakness with a geek fanbase and exploited it. We need to restrain ourselves so Lucas will have to create something new beyond a shiny package or new box.
An action figure can't move by itself. A box or case may be cool to look at but it just takes up space in the end. And a movie is just a movie. There really isn't much point to buying something if you already have it like many of us do. I'll probably take a wait and see approach with the new set or see if I can score it for a good price. But is it worth $20.00 for slightly improved video quality? That's up to all of us ourselves to decide. However, the only people who should consider buying this "for the future or to have a better chance of them being released again" is if they're going to give them to a library or a friend. Or better yet, rip them to their computer and make a "back up" copy, then donate them.

I have two major concerns with a letterboxed version of the OOT:

After being suckered into buying the 2004 version (publications from Lucasfilm clearly stated that this would be the only version that would ever see a DVD release) I'll have to buy the same 2004 Special Edition again just to obtain the OOT. I'd rather be able to buy the OOT seperately. No such luck.

The location of the subtitles. Subtitles in local language are added for foreign language releases. Furthermore, for scenes where the characters speak in an alien tongue (like Han talking to Greedo in Ep. 4) English subtitles are displayed. Since the master is a LaserDisc I think those English subtitles, instead of being a sub-picture streams, they will be part of the videostream content (and thus cannot be hidden). If the subtitles are placed too low in the frame (in the bottom half of the lower black bar), zooming in on the picture with my 16 : 9 TV causes the subtitles to fall out of frame. I hope those responsible for mastering the DVD take this into account and place the subtitles in such a position, that they are still visible when zoomed in.

On the other hand, because I already own two VHS versions (OOT and 1997 SE), a VideoCD version of the 1997 SE and the 2004 SE on DVD, I might as well rent the newly released Star Wars september version and make 1:1 copies of the extra's on DVD+R DL ...

You're right on all points there. If I knew, and I mean knew for sure that this was absolute fact and there was no changing this, that this would be the final release of the OOT, that'd be the only way I'd get it; so that I'd have a version that, even despite looking bad, would never wear out like a VHS. It'd also look better than a bootleg, even though a bootleg DVD would never wear out either, it'd still be worth getting to know I'd have one, decent looking version.
