Oh well. Looks like we are finally getting a definitive release of this film. I might track down the documentaries though (depending on what's going to be on the new set).

The big question now is HD or SD?
Author

I assume this is SD, but i'm sure an HDDVD version wont be out of the question.

Just curious, does anyone know how this was originally captured?

Let's hope it's either SD or both. I have absolutely no intentions of purchasing a HD player anytime soon (Bluray or HD-DVD).

Not really speculation at this point: Check out TheDigitalBits.com today.

DVD/BluRay/HDDVD "Director's Cut" ('92) (limited time release)
followed by a new Ridley Scott Anniversary Cut in theaters
then a massive box set for DVD/BluRay/HDDVD with (likely) all 4 editions of the film (put together by the guys that did the Alien Quadrilogy set)

And all anamorphic.
How can you not love it?

You exist just to correct my posts don't you?

Release of anything HDdvd and blueray related is speculation, as is extra for the dvds. "Now... we realize at this point, you may have questions. Keep in mind, there's a TON of additional material that's going to be included in this set that hasn't been announced and can't be talked about yet"

Splitting hairs aside. Given Ridley's other releases, I'm sure it will be everything we could want and more.

Of course it's speculation. But this isn't the same thing as saying "Lucas might have a change of heart and release them in anamorphic." What we have here is a director with a proven track record of giving great care in his DVD releases along with a DVD production team that sounds like they know what they're doing. Quote TheDigitalBits:

You veteran Bits readers will also be thrilled to learn that longtime Ridley Scott DVD producer Charles de Lauzirika and his team are involved in project, and have already been working on the set for a while now. Lauzirika, as you may know, was the producer responsible for Fox's 9-disc, massively comprehensive Alien Quadrilogy box set, as well as the multi-disc special editions of Scott's Gladiator (from DreamWorks), Black Hawk Down (from Sony) and Kingdom of Heaven (recently available from Fox), among others. You should also know that Lauzirika and his team are big fans of Blade Runner themselves. Rest assured that they know what you guys all want to see on this release, and they're working very hard to make it as good as it can be. Trust us when we say that this project is in EXACTLY the right hands

And BTW, what do you mean when you say "crash release"? The movie, the director's cut at least, has been ready to go for over a year.

I didn't say differently.

A crash release is basicly a term for a short release, and no, the 2007 director's cut is not finished, work was stopped on it.

I'm just happy like everyone else about this release, when the day comes I will pop it in my player and enjoy.

Maybe supermauerbros is refering to the 1992 Director's Cut for later this year? As proven by this thread, they've been sitting on a rather nice transfer.

I wouldn't really call it a crash release. This year's possible 2-disc re-release of the '92 DC probably won't include much new in terms of bonus material and they've still probably got over a year to work on the Final Cut and supplements. Not to mention some of the work that was already done before they had to close shop.

Why couldn't Ridley Scot have made Star Wars then we would actaully get proper releases

True enough. I suppose we should assume that the 92 director's cut is from the same source as the HDTV version? Either way I'm sure the print will look amazing.

So true though lol. And we probably would have got good Prequals also. I mean Ridley Scot doesn't even like the 92 director cut but he is still releasing it on Amanorphic widescreen.

Oops, Focuspuller found me out.

Either way, I'm sort of stoked to see the anniversary cut in theaters.

Let's hope it isn't like the Alien Director's Cut. Ridley Scott says in the DVD extras that the new version is the Director's Cut in that he did the cut, but he personally doesn't like it as much and that the original version is really what he considers the definitive one.

Are we confused? Let's hope he doesn't George Lucas this thing.

yeah, I don't see why we need 2 "director's" cuts on the same edition, unless it's that different. Also Ridley said when they started working on this whole thing that there would be possibly 3 discs, one of the versions would be a work print. Something to keep in mind?

I was lucky enought to see 2 diferent workprints of BR. They are very interesting, not as good as the theatrical releace but it's great seeing the diferent "takes" on the cut. As well as the diferent music. I would welcome workprints on DVD.

I guess the news that's been around for the past week or so is that Warners will be reissuing the '92 DC on DVD on September 12th. It'll be barebones and apparently only with Dolby Stereo. However, it will feature remastered picture which should look nice. Just throwing that out there.

The following is from www.thedigitalbits.com

Speaking of Warner, the studio has officially announced the re-release of Blade Runner: The Director's Cut on 9/12 (SRP $19.97). This is a single-disc release (dual-layered), with no new extras, but you'll be pleased to know that the video has been completely remastered with a brand new anamorphic widescreen film transfer. The audio will be Dolby 2.0 Surround, like the original release. Keep in mind that a much more elaborate multi-disc Blade Runner: Ultimate Edition is currently in production for release sometime in 2007 - that is CONFIRMED. This disc is really just designed to update the original Snapper case release (one of Warner's first EVER releases on DVD back in 1997) with better video in the meantime.

p.s. i sat in on the digitalbits panel at the recent San Diego Comicon, and they guy who is gonna make the ULTIMATE Edition
was there, and he is a HUGE fan, so expect a great ultimate dvd release.
