As for the LIE that the necessary elements do not exist anymore, they are just that, lies. The elements DO exist for this to happen in the way it should. Go to www.thedigitalbits.com and see. There are people just waiting to make a high quality anamorphic DVD transfer a reality. The elements may not exist at the Lucasfilm vaults, but, seemingly OTHERS had more foresight and respect for film history. Swallow your pride and ask to borrow them, for gods sake. Star Wars is Star Wars. It set the standard for quality in 1977 and it still did all the way up to 'Revenge of the Sith'. Whatever Mr. Lucas feels about which version best represents his 'vision', no version of any Star Wars film should ever exist on DVD in less than standard quality. Ever.
The utter disdain for the fans wishes seems especially callous and disrespectful after so many years. Mr. Lucas may have made the films, but WE made them successful. After 10 years of hoping, pleading, and begging, trying to throw us a bone with a pathetic little bootleg-quality POS is not going to cut it. We dont want a ultra, pristine, super high-quality 'restoration'. We are only asking for the original films, unaltered, with industry STANDARD mastering. Why would you even consider any less?? Have you so little respect for us? That, I think, is all we can infer from this situation. We give you money and you treat us like garbage. Well, no longer. I think it is safe to say that this is the straw that broke the camels back. The nail in the coffin. I plan on spending all the time I can from now till the day these come out letting people know what a sad slap in the face this is. I will be there at Best Buy the night before. Not lining up to buy them with all the other fans as I would like to be, but to spread the word that they should not bother spending their hard earned cash on something so worthless. I will have handbills, signs, buttons, anything I can think of to ensure that you dont sell any copies of this travesty. I never thought the day would come when I would encourage other fans NOT to buy something to do with Star Wars.
However, it is not too late. (I hope). You still have time to salvage some of your fanbase and your, (once), good name. I will beg one last time. Please, PLEASE take the time to make this right! You could make this DVD one long remembered. This is really your ultimate opportunity. If you did this right you could coast easily right into Geek history. Disc one: The Lowry-scrubbed anamorphic '04 edition, digitally sparkling and brilliant, and, Disc two: The rough but ready theatrical versions, anamorphic, in all their matte lined glory. These could be the ultimate Star Wars DVD's. These SHOULD be the ultimate Star Wars DVD's. Please, for the love of god, dont blow it!
Otherwise, Thanks for nothing,
Nathan Harbaugh
--I just sent this to Lynne Hale, I thought I'd share. PLEASE DO THE SAME, ITS NOT TOO LATE, DONT GIVE UP THE FIGHT!!!!!!!!!
