Will the OOT *even* be DVD9?

Author

This is just a speculation and not based on any evidence, but do you even think that this "bonus material" will even rate a DVD9 transfer? I mean, wouldn't it be less expensive for LFL to just throw them on single layer discs?

I can't see that they would need to be dual layer based on what we've heard so far- I mean plenty of early bare-bones DVDs were single layer.

If that is true, then it is like we have gasoline poured on us by Lucas already, and then he is going to throw a match at us and see us stop, drop, and roll.

I would not be surprised if these turned out to be single layered.

Well at least the reversed surround channels have been addressed.

I'm EXPECTING them to be SL at this point. With 4:3 video and one, single, 2.0 soundtrack.

The real question for me now: Will it be progressive or interlaced. I'm willing to bet interlaced, giving us the final pound up our collective asses.

You know friend, you're probably correct. DE-evolution rears its ugly head again.

My guess is that the unaltered disc will in fact be DL, but along with the movie there will be other stuff crammed in too, like Xbox demos and whatnot.

If it is a barebones disk ie no extra languages subs etc I hope it is on one layer! I hate those layer changes, especially where LFL put them on their dvd's.

It will be great, to get to this film which we would much rather have as the main feature, you will probably have to navigate a bonus menu full of lego advertisments, game demo and trailers for the prequels. I hope there is not anybody who still expects greatness from this release. Prepare to be disappointed and you might end up with something not too disappointing. If you get your hopes up too much you'll either do the typical fanboy thing and say how great it is and how lucky you are to have the very little you have, or you be sickeningly disappointed follwed by and anger towards LFL and $45 dollars or so you just let them crap on.

If Lucas considers the 04 the definitive versions, and he can't even be bothered to make a decent DVD release of those, don't expect him to do anything worthwhile with that other film that is on VHS if anybody wants it.

Oh god. I didn't even think of that. What will the openning menu look like? The 2004 version was so cool, but as "bonus" material? Now I'm scared. Probably a pixilated image of Luke with a big shoddy button that says "Duh, Play Moovy".

I'm thinking that it will be dual layer, but as said before, crammed with a bunch of stupid stuff, like game demos, silly film bits, etc. The best thing will be to hope that it won't be a "spite release" with a rigged transfer to make certain every matte line and other "dated special effects" stands out like a sore thumb.

I am almost expecting Lucasfilm to release them in shoddy 352x480 resolution even...
If the masters indeed are D2 tapes, they would contain a composite signal that would not be more than ~300 vertically anyway.

It could be worse. It could be hidden on the disc as an Easter Egg and hidden so well that half of us can't even find it!

Don't say things like that, Gaffertape. Remember Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone DVD? They advertised that the DVD's contained deleted scenes, then had them hidden away as easter eggs. Most people couldn't find them, and got mad, assuming the studio had lied and they weren't there. The studio ended up having to apologizing and publishing directions to find the deleted scenes. I really hope that Lucasfilm doesn't pull something like that.

Hell, I still haven't found those things. Of course, I haven't looked too hard. The layout of all those Harry Potter 2nd discs could stand to be a little straightforward. They're creative, but when I want to see documentaries, I don't want to have to figure out whether, logically, they'd be located in Professor McGonagall's classroom, the Great Hall, or Diagon Alley. Just have straightforward descriptions!!!

well, I don't know what the fuss is about...

it's taken from the 1993 Crap-O-Matic LD master... so, the movie basically is around 700-something Megabytes.

it would be useless putting it into a Dual Layer format... because.... where's that quality?

I don't think you can fit a whole movie's worth of mpeg2 video and AC3 stereo audio in 700MB. I may be wrong, but I don't think I am. I do think it will fit handily on one layer, though, unless they use a very high constant bitrate for whatever reason.

These aren't going to be the unaltered movies you know. My source tells me Han Solo has been digitally replaced by Genghis Khan, and that Mark Hamill has been altered to look more like Abraham Lincoln, which was of course the original vision.

What do you all think about these recent quotes from Lucas?

"It's just the original versions, as they were," Lucas said. "We didn't do anything to it at all. But we're not sure how many people want that."

AND

"Now we'll find out whether they really wanted the original or whether they wanted the improved versions," he said. "It'll all come out in the end."

Old or not I appreciated the link darkhelmet. I hadn’t seen it before and I can use George’s BS quotes to pressure my wife into getting me the OOT DVDs. Not that she needs any added motivation (I’ve been crying for years now), but extra ammunition is always appreciated.
