I personally am not that bothered about the anamorphic debate - I just want Star Wars preserved on DVD so I can watch it over and over without worrying about my VHS degrading and snapping, but the fact that he seems to be pulling this shit on purpose to rub shit in our faces irritated me enough to write to the guy. He's clearly insane.
When bands release their old albums on CD, they don't sound all crackly and shit like a vinyl, they sound like a CD. And that's because the original recording, the band's original performance, sounded that way, and the crappy medium of vinyl altered that sound to something less than it was. By cleaning up the masters and laying them onto a CD, we get a better, clearer sound. It's the same in this case - 35mm is incredibly clear and beautiful to watch - and DVD can go some way towards replicating that (further than VHS or Laserdisc anyway). The technology exists to allow us to watch one of the greatest, most seminal movies of all time in a good, clear way, so why not let us? It's just spiteful and sad.
